I believe what happened to Iran — Persia — was that after it was conquered by the Arabs it had to submit to Islam. Thereafter, like all people ruled over by elites with mindspace of religion to aid the top-down control, put their own spin on Muhammed. This was like for example Henry VIII and the Reformation. Political players thus are willing to splinter belief systems in order to maintain population control, but wholesale more drastic belief system changes are born of conquest. But even with conquest the old beliefs often surface in newer systems. For example, the celebration of the 25th December in Christianity, derived from pagan beliefs, and five a day prayer rituals that Persian Zoroastrianism carried over into the conquest by Islam.
Religious belief systems tend to follow the direction of political control. More people want to “get by” and make their way in the world than make religious statements of principle. During the early modern period of British history, Catholic and Protestant martyrs — probably likely nationalist activists — were in minority of a minority. Not being a “Christian” in the narrow sense that Bible thumpers visiting here would insist upon, I further observe the passage of England being Catholic to largely Protestant was born of a state top-down policy. This begs a question of the original Roman Catholic nature of Great Britain that I have elsewhere argued was a manifestation of the temporarily ineffective Roman Empire drawing economic rent by the threat of “eternal damnation” rather than the more direct application of the spear and short sword. The notion of “mindspace” born of the government “Mindspace” document is a useful reminder of how religion is no more than an adjunct of political control.
I might add that while “religion” is the hijacking by worldly powers of man’s spiritual nature, the light yet shines in the darkness.
