It has always been useful for “liberals” that even now most people confuse liberalism as meaning freedom for people, when its political meaning has always been freedom for capital. Capital is free to cross borders unhindered, unlike people, and it crosses borders every day as markets close around the world and others open. As Asian markets close capital moves to Europe, then to the US, then back to Asia. And capital is now the most unregulated it has ever been while people now are the most regulated we’ve ever been. Liberals were for capitalism first but with a less brutal edge towards exploitation.
Greedy rich people who complain when their money is stopped from exploiting a market, a country, a people etc, conflate that restriction with the actions of “wishy-washy do-gooder liberals”, and people cheer on that sentiment thinking they’re attacking a certain kind of people they don’t like either, not realising they’re actually defending a capitalist system which seeks to exploit them to the maximum.
