Sir Keir Starmer was asked “how many more children” will die as he left flowers at the scene of the Southport knife attack.
The Prime Minister placed his own floral tribute among hundreds of others at a police cordon on Hart Street, and thanked the emergency services workers who responded to the incident.
The brief visit, which lasted barely two minutes, was marred by shouts from some members of the public.
As the Prime Minister walked close by, a man said: “Here’s your photo opportunity.”
Another shouted: “How many more children? Our kids are dead and you’re leaving already?”
A third man shouted: “Get the truth out!”, while Serena Kennedy, the Merseyside Police Chief Constable, was asked why the alleged attacker had not been named, and whether he was on a “watch list”.
In a video posted on X, formerly Twitter, a man could be heard shouting: “Go away, you’re not wanted,”
Another woman said: “I’ve just found out my friend’s nine-year-old daughter was killed, the person I’ve held as a child, and you can’t do s—.
One woman called the Prime Minister a “scumbag”.
Sir Keir, visiting the scene after speaking to media earlier, laid a wreath of pink and white flowers watched by dozens of members of the public and TV crews, reporters and photographers.
He thanked emergency service workers, telling them: “I hope you feel proud of the part that you played in the most difficult circumstances, to do what you could for those young lives.”
Speaking to media during his visit, the Prime Minister said: “I came here to pay my respects to the victims and families, who are going through raw pain and grief that most of us can’t imagine.
“I can’t imagine, as a dad myself, to get a briefing from the chief constable and the emergency services about the ongoing investigation but, also, importantly, to have the opportunity to say to those that were responding yesterday from the emergency services, a personal thank you to them and to shake their hand, and to say that as Prime Minister, on behalf of the country, we are grateful for what they did.
“They, of course, say that they will respond – they’re professionals – to anything, but there’s no pretending that what they had to respond to yesterday was ordinary. It was very, very difficult. They were absolutely professional. And it was important for me to come and say simple words – thank you.”

A police helicopter circled overhead as beer bottles and flares were thrown in central London over the course of two hours, with Winston Churchill’s statue and the Downing Street gates targeted.

Videos on social media show a crowd of people in a street, with one showing a youth throwing objects at a line of police in riot gear holding shields.
Jonathan Brash, the Labour MP for the town, said he was “deeply concerned” about the situation and would be meeting with police to discuss their response to the incident.
It comes one day after 53 officers were injured in Southport after a group gathered outside a mosque, with bricks and masonry thrown and a police van set on fire.
Tension has mounted since the deaths of three children at a Taylor Swift themed dance class on Hart Street, after a knifeman entered the premises and launched a brutal attack.
Five other children remain in a critical condition alongside two adults, who were believed to have been ‘bravely’ defending the young victims.
