Virginia’s Republican governor called for “phone-free” schools in an executive order on Tuesday, citing the mental health and learning crisis among school-age children.
Governor Glenn Youngkin’s order directs the education department to issue guidance on establishing “cell phone-free education policies and procedures” for public schools.
The order cites the “alarming mental health crisis” among teenagers that is “driven in part by extensive social media usage and widespread cell phone possession among children.”
Teens’ risk of mental health issues like depression and anxiety doubles if they spend more than three hours a day on social media, according to one study, and the average teen spends nearly five hours scrolling, according to Gallup.
The public school plan also aims to “significantly reduce the amount of time students can be on phones without parental supervision.”
“This essential action will promote a healthier and more focused educational environment where every child is free to learn. Creating cellphone and social media-free educational environments in Virginia’s K-12 education system will benefit students, parents, and educators,” Youngkin said in a statement.
Virginia Education Secretary Aimee Guidera said that while government is not the only solution, limiting screen time at school is a must.
“The data is clear, and it is time for Virginians to come together to address the damage of social media and screens to healthy childhoods,” Guidera said. “Government cannot be the sole solution to this crisis; school communities – especially parents and teachers – must work together to discuss and develop common sense approaches to limit screen time, prioritize open channels of communication, and re-establish norms that reinforce healthy and vibrant learning communities.”

Ben Shapiro recently stated that his patriotism was entirely predicated on US support for Israel. That was quite an admission. What it implies is that, should the US ever reconsider its foreign policy in the Middle-East, Shapiro would immediately adopt an antagonistic stance against advocates for peace and neutrality; America First supporters or others of similar patriotic disposition. The same folk that he currently embraces as an important demographic for his platform’s continued success.

Good luck with that, especially in the schools infested by young black street simians…on the rare days they decide to even show up. Most of the white kids will reluctantly comply with that sensible rule, but simian DaShweanTay and Laqueeenisha will get violent. I had to get a new mobile electric Jew a couple months ago because my old, and I mean old, one bit the dust. The new one, which I was careful to choose one that had basically 0 “apps” preinstalled, gives me a usage recap every week. The usage recaps consistently tell me “You used your device 3 less minutes than last week”, indicating I’m almost at my goal of 0. I do use it to talk and text with family and friends though, but practically nothing else, certainly not any anti-social media. When I was at a store scouting for the new device, I advised the clerk I barely used any data and asked if there was a lower costing plan available. They pulled up my account and they looked stunned, sputtering, “You don’t really use any data…like…at all….”. I told them I firmly believed social media and frequent device usage was the express lane to induced mental retardation. They had a short moment of reflection and apparently took personally what little of my comment they actually understood. Mission accomplished.
My solution? HOME SCHOOL! But no governor will ever advocate for that, and in some families both parents work full time. But that doesn’t mean they can’t home school…when I was a full time teacher I taught my kids in the evening after dinner, and also on weekends. No excuses!
Won’t work! The parents are the cause not the children. REAL education is no longer a priority. Only the propaganda of race verse race. This will set all mankind back several thousand years.
