The Mail reports today that an Exeter University philosophy student was threatened with expulsion in 2018 after he was overheard through the wall of his room by a neighbour who took exception to his views:
A philosophy student overheard through the wall of his room saying “veganism is wrong” and “gender fluidity is stupid” was threatened with expulsion by his university, the Mail on Sunday can reveal.
Robert Ivinson said he was disciplined after a student next door in halls of residence at Exeter University heard the comments then complained he had been offensive and “transphobic”.
Mr. Ivinson, who expressed the views in a phone call to a friend, was hauled before university officials and put on a ‘behavioural contract’ for the rest of his studies.
It seems, according to the Mail’s description, that the university authorities are effectively sentencing students in absentia:
He was warned he could be expelled if the university thought he had done anything else wrong, and told by letter he had been found guilty of harassment.
Edward Skidelsky – director of the Committee for Academic Freedom, academics fighting to maintain free expression on campuses – said: “It’s extraordinary that in 21st Century Britain eavesdroppers can be rewarded, and a student punished for remarks made to a friend in the privacy of his room.
“Robert’s case once again underlines the insidious erosion of the freedom to express opinions and ideas which is playing out at our universities.”
Although Mr. Ivinson, who is still studying at Exeter, experienced the University’s disciplinary system several years ago he has only recently felt able to talk about the incident, thanks to support from the Committee for Academic Freedom.
When an officer from the University’s estate patrol banged on his door to tell him his female neighbour had complained, the mature student was shaken.
“It was like the Stasi had come to my door,” he said. “He stuck his foot in my door and said you’ve been saying some very offensive things.“
Mr. Ivinson was called to a disciplinary hearing and grilled by university officials.
It’s not clear what the most remarkable aspect of this story is: the eavesdropping neighbour who dobbed him in; the University employee who enthusiastically went round to Mr. Ivinson’s room to threaten him for daring to criticise Veganism; or Exeter for punishing him for holding non-conformist views. Whichever it was, the comparison with the Stasi and East Germany seems uncomfortably appropriate.

The sad thing here is that this young ram student actually spent time considering the question, instead of just sticking to the simple truth, ‘there are only rams and ewes’. You see, no one can claim he was denying other genders, because one can’t deny something that doesn’t exist. I won’t consider gender fluidity. Okay, I’ve just said it, but only for argument.
I only recognise two genders, full stop, but I accept that within each gender, there’s a very broad spectrum.

I need to add my voices to Chesterton’s over the contempt with which I hold academia. Maybe teachers of young children, often having unexceptional intellects can be forgiven, but for those who work in secondary education through to university, what a bunch of cowardly, moronic, and bubble reputation seekers lot they mostly are.
We have scarcely witnessed real paradigm busting research in the last fifty years. Why so? Because all changes to our understanding of the universe with its concomitant exposition of it, have consequences for the social “balance of power” and wealth distribution. If this was the stone age the wheel inventor would be called a nazi by the guy who made wooden sledges.
Universities in Canada, and likely in most other places, where nationhood is trying to survive, have generally become places of top-down mind control, fear and oppression. I have found no successful legal case in Canada challenging University administrative abuses based on a professor’s or a student’s fundamental rights and freedoms. I personally know of cases where the leading university in my area behaves like Nazi Gestapo goons with all those in their control.
When I was student, the rule was that if any professor’s or student’s views conflicted with the official narratives of our lying governments or even those of a particular faculty, but those views were sincere, rational and relative to the course, you would be at least heard and not punished. Few universities had official narratives regarding politics, religion and sex which denied speculation and debate. Things changed, such that if a prof or a student steps out of line from the official social-engineering and mind-control operations, then if you are a prof you will be weeded out, or punished in some way, and if you are a student you will be lucky even to get a passing grade. They have their ways.
Free speech in a classroom on various topics was generally welcomed and considered constructive. My understanding has always been that the main reason for being able to go to a university was not just to get a meal ticket, but to learn how to think and to make some contribution to others in my filed in order to help make the world a better place.
Things changed. The generation which were afforded the greatest liberties in sowing their oats, turned into the most repressive, amoral, money-grubbing fakes of all time. The liberals became narrow-minded authoritarians, where truth, goodness, and justice are all subject to their will and the power they wield over others. [Covid has proven this view, absolutely.] Conservative views were repressed and neutralized on the basis of a fake pluralism, and then when the secular humanists, and the Marxists squirmed their way into all of the key positions of power and influence, all with the push of the many philanthropists whose names we see decorating every major university building and complex built over the past 40 years, the entire concept of what a university was supposed to be was thrown into the dumpster. As the funding is a top-down affair, so are the appointments, the courses, the ideologies, and the groupthink which is propagated. .
In throwing out the baby of universalism and the pursuit of truth, knowledge, goodness, and beauty, professors and students are only allowed now to parrot the official new-normal, brave-new-world-order groupthink, and if they are caught thinking outside of the box, then they are axed
It might help if more academics would read Newman’s, “The Idea of a University”, and then work in a more untied way for that broad-thinking, universal, idea of freedom and responsibility, which influenced many leading university minds of his age to help preserve and form the greatest universities in our history.
