From what I see all the woke Western militaries are in very poor shape. The USA especially. I live by a base and get daily visuals of the fat out of shape guys/gals in the military.
As far as Staff Sergeants… many of those in Viet Nam. It was the Gunny’s (E7) that usually led.

Fighting in the African bush in Angola and South West Africa in the 1980’s most patrols were led by corporals who were 18-20 years old and they kicked the crap out of FAPLA and the Cubans led by USSR field officers.
A patrol consisted of 10 man section. Mostly conscripts. When large scale operations were staged they were lead by professional soldiers but the troops were conscripts.
