It’s time to expose British government moral vacuum on Israel/Palestine
Whether Christian or otherwise, we have the right to expect the “established Church” to uphold Jesus’s teachings about the inherent and equal value of all human life.
With our Open Letter, our blogs, and our letters in Church Times, CAMPAIN and collaborating groups have repeatedly expressed disappointment about the stance of Archbishop Welby with regard to Israel/Palestine. A recent letter from the charity Sabeel Kairos sets this out succinctly.
We have followed up by surveying 105 active and retired bishops to try to ascertain how far the Archbishop’s views are shared by the Church hierarchy as a whole. We simply asked them whether Israel was guilty of the crime of apartheid, and if not why not It is an idea that the Archbishop has steadfastly dismissed. You can read our survey findings in this press-release-cum-summary, at the bottom of which there is a link to the full report.
Looking at the responses, we conclude there is moral vacuum in the Church of England as regards Israel/Palestine. Given the mass killing and maiming of Palestinian civilians since October 7th, this is a matter of immediate and serious concern.
When Rishi Sunak gave Israel “unqualified support” in responding to the initial violence, the Church should have demanded he first consider the context. Anyone who has followed the situation in Israel/Palestine knows that the current round of violence can only be understood in the context of Israel’s 75-year oppression and dispossession of the Palestinians. Regrettably the Church chose to remain silent on this point.
It is time to take action, and we suggest you do as follows:
1. Contact bishops in your locality and ask why they did not respond to the letter, or challenge the response received. The full report shows which bishops responded and how.
2. Share this email with your local Anglican clergy, asking for their feedback and for the matter to be discussed by their Parochial Church Council (PCC) and Deanery Synod
3. Share it with other denominational and faith leaders and ask them if they think Israel has been committing the crime of apartheid.
4. Share the report with local media contacts and invite them to publish it.
5. Share your experience with us, by writing to admin@campain.org, or on our Facebook group.

Without Europeans blunting the worst of it, Christianity is no good either, and we have to fight all three systems at once: available to us in this endeavour is only modern Science, an entity separate from religion and still fairly new to the public. (Alternative mysticisms do not really get anywhere)

According to Haaretz, General Amit Saar, head of the IDF Military Intelligence Research Department, wrote to the Prime Minister on 19 March and 16 July, warning him of the Hamas attack in the making.
According to the Israeli press, in July Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired his Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, because the latter had warned the government of the “perfect storm” to be launched by Hamas. Gallant has since been reinstated.
According to the Italian daily Corriere della Sera, Benjamin Netanyahu had been personally warned about the Hamas attack by his friend, Colonel Yigal Carmon, director of MEMRI.
