Argentinian President-elect Javier Milei has done a complete 180 on Buenos Aires joining BRICS, saying the South American nation won’t be joining the five-nation group.
Diana Mondino, senior economic adviser to Milei, confirmed this development to Sputnik Brazil on Nov. 20, a day after Milei won the country’s second presidential runoff. She told the outlet that Argentina was not planning to become a BRICS member come Jan. 1, 2024. The nation’s prior request to join the group was approved in August – alongside those from Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
“I don’t know why there is so much interest around BRICS,” said Mondino, who is Milei’s candidate for foreign minister in his cabinet. She added that it remained uncertain as to how joining the group would benefit Buenos Aires. Nevertheless, Mondino remarked that the government will “analyze” if joining the BRICS would reap rewards for the country.
The conservative Milei had previously expressed opposition to joining BRICS unlike his predecessor, outgoing Argentinian President Alberto Fernandez. He has also voiced hesitancy to support economic ties with Russia and China – two of the BRICS core members. Instead, Milei has striven to establish ties with the U.S. and Israel.
“I’m not going to push for deals with communists because they don’t respect the basic parameters of free trade, freedom and democracy; it’s geopolitics,” Milei said in August. Despite this, Milei pledged not to interfere with Argentine businesses involved with BRICS member countries. He has also vowed to “dollarize” Argentina’s economy – which contrasts with BRICS’ goal to wean itself off the U.S. dollar.
A Nov. 20 report by Bloomberg said Milei has promised “shock therapy” to address Argentina’s embattled economy. The South American nation is presently dealing with its worst economic crisis, with inflation surging 60 percent over the past year alone.
Making matters worse is Argentina’s $44 billion debt, which is due to be paid to international bondholders and the International Monetary Fund next year. Martin Castellano of the Washington, D.C.-based Institute of International Finance said the country will need “a big current account surplus amid a stabilization plan” to tackle the arrears.
Fernandez touts benefits of joining BRICS
In August, Fernandez described the opportunity to join BRICS as a “new scenario” for Argentina. His comment followed Moscow’s acceptance of Buenos Aires’ request for membership.
Fernandez earlier expressed hope that Argentina will become a full BRICS member. “We are enthusiastic about the prospect of coordinating policies that enhance the agenda of the countries of the global south,” said the Argentinian leader. “We aspire to be full members of this group of nations.”
The outgoing Argentinian president also cited several reasons why the country joining BRICS is a productive prospect.
“We are safe and responsible food suppliers, recognized in the field of biotechnology and applied logistics technology. This means that we are not only capable of producing and exporting food. We also know how to provide services and train specialists, so that other countries can increase their productive efficiency and thus improve the quality of life of their inhabitants.”

One must be careful in the case of Argentina’s Javier Milei, remembered that the outgoing President Fernandez was nothing more than the puppet of the long-reigning, long-grifting Kirchner governments — first the husband’s, then the wife’s. Now, the annual inflation rate is at a staggering 124.4%, and the total government debt-to-GDP ratio is expected to rise to 89.5% this year, from 84.7% in 2022, according to the IMF. That sounds quite improbable. But it is the reality for the Argentineans. They are fed up, and frightened.
Remembered also that Argentina’s is a highly educated, highly developed, once staggeringly affluent country that remains highly natural-resources rich, and its voters are a sophisticated bunch. They are unlikely to elect a fool as the leader.
And very interestingly: Donald Trump has announced his intention to be present at Milei’s investiture. This is no small commendation of the latter: No serving or ex-president of the USA has ever attended a presidential investiture in Argentina. It seems obvious to me that the we have no scope for crying for Argentina, now that Milei has arrived.

And he has been plotting his approach to correcting the county’s hideous economic condition for quite some time, and telling the electorate about it. That was his electoral platform. He has promises to keep.
Zelenski on the other hand was and remains the uneducated, prancing little whore of whom nothing was asked but his co-operation with the absurd make-believe adulation of the ‘West’. Now, he has been dropped, albeit as a very rich man. As another commentator said in on an earlier thread, he can look forward to being ‘ceausescu-ed’. Diego, I have gathered that you are Argentinian. So obviously, you know the situation on the ground much better than I do. But I have very dear Argentinian friends, and none of them is a fool. They believe in Milei, despite that it is known of him that his drive for the presidency was foreign funded. I am hoping that tmy friends are proved right about his capacity to deliver the medicine the country needs.

there´s nothing new regarding his economic approach..in one word: privatisation of everything that belongs to the people…giving it all to his jew masters so in some time if any argentinean wants a glass of water he will have to BUY it from them…..It is almost word by word what we already had here in the 90´s with Menem who remained the whole decade in power and left the bomb just about to go off to the next one and a year and a half later off it went…the latter went off in helicopter to never come back…the banks closed doors and you were only able to withdraw a little amount per day…all the supposed dollar savings were returned two years later in pesos accounting for 30% of their original value (at best)….and lot of horrible things followed until , as said, the IMF was expelled using the whole of the reserves remaining to pay the debt and starting from scratch but with our own, the country began an economic expansion without precedent, until the crisis of 2008. The site is a frequent pilgrimage location for Jews and others who believe there is special spiritual significance to prayers made at the burial place of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the last leader of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement.
Milei is Catholic, but his admiration for and engagement with Judaism runs deep.
