Introduction – Nov 23, 2023

Unprovoked knife attacks in Dublin have left five injured, two of them seriously, a woman and a little girl. Of the five injured, three were small children aged between 5 and 6.

I knew when the incident was reported on the BBC six o’clock news that something crucial was being omitted. That’s because whenever the BBC reports a crime if the suspect is not white the broadcaster will rarely mention this.

Hours later a twitter post (below) confirmed my suspicions.

Readers will note that the BBC only describes the suspect as a “man”, although eyewitnesses quoted elsewhere and not by the BBC were more expansive. Why is the BBC not mentioning these details? Why is it effectively censoring news reports? Ed.

Girl, 5, in emergency care after five hurt in Dublin knife attack

BBC Online – Nov 23, 2023

What do we know?

Supt Liam Geraghty briefed the press a short while ago. At the early stages in the investigation, here’s what we know so far:

  • Gardaí were called shortly after 13:30 local time to an incident at Parnell Square East in Dublin
  • A woman in her 30s, a man in his 50s, a boy (5) and two girls (5 and 6) were injured
  • All were taken to hospitals – the boy has been discharged
  • The adult woman is being treated for serious injuries and the five-year-old girl is having emergency medical treatment
  • The adult man is a “person of interest” in the investigation and is currently receiving medical treatment
  • Gardaí believe a male attacked a woman
  • Gardaí are following a “definite line of inquiry” although they have “an open mind” at this time
  • The Supt says Gardaí do not believe the incident was “terror-related” and that it appears to be a “stand alone attack”
  • He is appealing for information or video footage of the incident and urges the public “not to make rash judgements on what may have happened”

Disturbing Incident in Dublin: Foreign Intruder Stabs Multiple School Children, Prompts Calls for Urgent Action to Ensure Public Safety

Citizen Watch Report – Nov 23, 2023

The alarming incidents of multiple stabbings involving young school children in Dublin City Center have shaken the community. Witnesses describe a foreign man entering the school and attacking five children.

As word spread via social media about the identity of the suspect angry crowds began to gather. Although we don’t condone lawlessness we can understand their anger. However, the BBC in reporting the unrest failed to elaborate on what may have sparked the protests. According to BBC Online:

It’s not clear what exactly caused this evening’s unrest. The Irish police chief has blamed the unrest on a “lunatic, hooligan faction driven by far-right ideology”, and has urged people to ignore “misinformation… circulating on social media”

Readers will note, however, that while echoing claims that “far-right ideology … misinformation… circulating on social media” were responsible for the violence, the BBC still says absolutely nothing about the identity of the prime suspect involved in the stabbings. Why?

Are they scared that identifying the prime suspect will spark more unrest? Have the media been asked by the authorities not to inflame the situation any further by disclosing the actual facts involved? Ed.
