Oregon school chiefs have again suspended the need for high schoolers to prove their math, reading and writing skills in order to graduate.
The State Board of Education voted last week to continue the suspension for another five years amid claims they are unfair on minority students who don’t test well.
In order to earn a diploma, graduating students were previously required to earn standardized test scores indicating proficiency in reading, writing and math.
But this was put on pause during the pandemic as standardized tests weren’t happening amid school closures.
Following a unanimous vote by the Oregon State Board of Education last week, the requirement will not be in place for at least the next five years.
Opponents of the essential skills requirement argued it was harmful to students of color, students with disabilities and those learning English as a second language.
These groups were frequently required to take extra math and writing classes in their senior year to prove they deserved to graduate.
But board members underscored that state-mandated standardized tests will still be administered to most Oregon high school students – they just won’t be used to determine whether a student has the skills necessary to graduate.
‘The only thing we are suspending is the inappropriate use of how those assessments were being used,’ state board member Vicky López Sánchez, a dean at Portland Community College, said during Thursday’s meeting.
‘I think that really is in the best interest of Oregon students.’
Hundreds of people submitted public comments urging the board to reinstate the standards.
But Board Chair Guadalupe Martinez Zapata described the pushback as a ‘campaign of misinformation.’
During a September meeting, she likened ‘rhetoric about cultural and social norms being the underlying reason for underperformance on assessments by systemically marginalized students’ to ‘racial superiority arguments.’
‘It is not bigoted, it is not racist to want your student to be able to actually learn,’ former gubernatorial candidate Christine Drazan told FOX News.
Drazan ran for governor last year, losing to Democrat Tina Kotek by less than 4% of the vote.
The overhaul of the skills requirement is part of a bigger issue, she said – as education officials are now considering ‘equity grading’ instead of the traditional A to F scale.
‘They are now moving forward with an agenda that says if you cheat, you can’t be flunked. If you don’t show up, you don’t get a zero,’ she said.
‘They’re not going to have homework that they grade because having homework somehow they view as being inequitable.’

What does an Oregon High School Diploma actually certify? I think it tells a prospective employer that the holder of the certificate was alive on the day they handed them out. That’s it!
I suppose the next step is to nix employee application forms because they discriminate against applicants of color. If an employer has a worker with an Oregon HS Diploma, they cannot assume that employee can read safety notices such as what to do in case of a fire and that employer would be negligent if they did.

I had an interesting revelation hit home a couple weeks ago. My girlfriend’s son graduated from university this past year, graduated with high honors no less. I never saw him cracking the books a whole lot. He not only got an offer for the Masters program in graduate schools, they asked him to be a graduate teaching assistant, which meant 100% of his tuition would be covered, plus, they would pay him to show up.
About 3 weeks in, he was assigned a basic research paper in which he expected to cite several sources. Basic stuff for those of us over 40 who completed high school and even college, right? The kid, who we thought was respectably intelligent because he “earned” high academic honors his whole life, collapsed like a cheap tent. He got total brain lock and couldn’t put one bloody word to digital paper. Worse, the topic of the paper was in his wheelhouse, an area of great interest to him, not the mating rituals of Maltese gophers or something. His mother,who truly earned academic honors in university, and I, no academic slouch, offered solid suggestions on how to get started. He got nowhere. We then threw some talking points to him to try to help him kick-start this thing.
Over a week later, he still had not written one…single…f*cking….word. His mother went to have a “come to Jesus” talk with him and he could barely speak a coherent sentence. It was like he had sudden onset retardation. I told him he had to shake it off and do the damn work. Then I left for a week on a trip. During that time, the kid quit graduate school, pissed away a golden opportunity, because he couldn’t, or wouldn’t, write the f*cking paper. His mother and I were furious…and baffled for a short time. I mean, the kid was smart, right? He always got great grades, even in university. The I remembered how I would hardly ever see him exerting much apparent effort in his school work. The first time the kid was faced with a middling academic challenge, something the educated of previous generations dealt with in high school, let alone college, he shit his pants and folded. I lost any and all respect for him, of course. His mother, stunned at his epic failure, asked me if he just wasn’t as intelligent as we had thought. I had to tell her the truth and responded, “No, darling, I’m sorry to say he is actually an imbecile. Schools have clearly become a f*cking joke, as we suspected.”
Oregon once again makes international news, The Governor, Tiny Kotex, has so far carried on in the tradition of Kate Brown (flush her down) with the retarded liberal agenda – like legalize all drugs and let all the mexicans in – which bring in all the drugs and now Oregon has a fentanol death crisis, the kids are dying at a record rate from laced marijuana courtesy of immoral Jews, mexican gang bangers, blacks.
And now Oregon finds it impossible to even educate the kids with mininmum requirements – so why are we paying property tax when the state can not even do their one job tasked.

In my own education back in the day we were not docked in marks in the humanities for disagreeing with the professors unless they were left wing or raving lunatic liberals. That all changed with my own kids going to university over the past 20 years, and so my wife and I did our best to guide them into math and the sciences, which has made all of the difference. Otherwise, you are abandoning your kids to be modeled into bloody Marxists or into raving lunatic liberals who cannot think or reason and who do not know the difference between an objective fact and a game on the internet.
