Tehran on Tuesday released the footage that has been recorded by its domestically-developed drone from the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer during a surveillance mission in the Indian Ocean.
The Iranian Army’s unmanned aircraft conducted the operation against the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer in the Northern part of the body of water.
The Ababil (Flock of Birds)-V drone managed to keep the US warship under surveillance for around 24 hours.
The aerial vehicle reportedly took off from a base located on the Southern Iranian island of Jask before heading to conduct the surveillance mission against the US vessel.
The Ababil-class unmanned aerial vehicle is hard to detect by reconnaissance apparatuses since its body is capable of absorbing radar signals.
This is not the first time Iranian UAVs have managed to retrieve precise footage of seaborne American military assets.
Back in May, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) confirmed that its naval forces are keeping track of the American military movement in the Strait of Hormuz, including the recent traverse of the US, UK and French navy chiefs aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS Paul Hamilton.
Commander of the IRGC Navy’s First Zone Brigadier General Abbas Gholamshahi stated the IRGC Navy monitors the movement of vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf “round-the-clock”.
Iran has in recent years gained significant progress in developing surveillance and combat drones.
Military officials say Tehran is self-sufficient in building drones from their fuselage to various subsystems and engines, adding the country’s Armed Forces are equipped and ready to carry out any type of drone operations and missions. Tehran stresses its drone capability is non-negotiable.
