According to Wikipedia, the Prophet Mohammed did not abolish slavery and nor did he outlaw it. Instead he set out to improve the conditions of slaves by urging his followers to treat their slaves humanely and free them as a way of atoning for one’s sins.
Thus men like Tippu Tip (real name – real name Ḥamad ibn Muḥammad ibn Jumʿah ibn Rajab ibn Muḥammad ibn Saʿīd al Murjabī) could easily have participated in the slave trade without transgressing any Islamic laws.
