It would explain a lot if the Cecils had Jewish antecedents. I would like to see the chapter and verse on this. The assertion that Elizabeth I was his lover seems doubtful to me. Apparently she surrounded herself by the good-looking men from a pleasure point of view. • Edward de Vere is known to have written poetry and plays. Unfortunately, none of his plays survive but eight of his poems do. He is named, by contemporaries, as the author of twelve other poems, of which we know only the titles.

I have no way of knowing whether all of the canon attributed to the pen name of Shakespeare is De Vere, but I’m as convinced to my cause as the moon landing were hoaxed and Israel was behind 9/11 that he is the major author.
I am not avoiding the particular issues by not addressing them. I would just refer you to the so called Oxford scholars and Thomas Looney’s book. I have forgotten more on this than I now know, having satisfied myself like a juror I have a verdict that I now disregard the information leading to my judgement.

None of the Stratford man’s literary correspondence survive unlike other great figures of the time.

He left no books in his will and the same document, it has been suggested shows a signature with a well written “William” – suggested as being by the the notary – and a poorly written “Shakespeare” written by the Stratford guy himself. I understand that only around five or six signatures of his exist; these are a subject of debate too.
De Vere’s lacklustre poetry may be attributed to the fact that it is his earlier verse. Notwithstanding, Looney matches suggests the six line stanzas comprising verse where line 1 and 3 rhyme, 2 and 4 rhyme, and 5 and 6 rhyme provide something of a finger print in common with Shakespeare. This was part of the methodology that Looney followed.

• J. Thomas Looney was a schoolteacher from Gateshead. As you and I both know, the grounded intelligence of schoolteachers cannot be taken as axiomatic.
By “Oxford Scholars,” I take it that you mean, “Oxfordians” – advocates of de Vere’s authorship of Shakespeare – (who have not been scholars generally,) although the de Vere conjecture, has indeed had a number of prominent supporters, over the years. Among them were; John Gallsworthy, Sigmund Freud, Orson Welles and Derek Jacobi. The only noteworthy literary scholar, whom I know of, who favoured the de Vere thesis, was Professor L.P. Benezet of Dartmouth College in the US.
I won’t make any cheap remarks about the fallacy of appeals to authority.
• Edward de Vere had his own theatre company, the Oxford Players. They were rivals of the Chamberlain’s Men (Shakespeare’s troupe.) Why would the boastful and vainglorious amateur, de Vere have wished to surrender his plays to a competitor and insist upon his personal anonymity being maintained?
The only reason that I spared de Vere’s extant poetry complete ridicule is because I too think that the solitary poem which you cite, has some degree of merit.

• William of Stratford went to King’s Grammar School, one of the finest schools in England. At the time, Westminister, was the the most esteemed of all schools but to give you an idea of the status of King’s Grammar, its headmaster was on double the salary of the headmaster of Eton. It is in the historical records. There were only three tenured schoolmasters at King’s, all Oxford dons. Lessons were from 6 am to 6 pm, six days a week. Classes were conducted in English, Latin and Classical Greek.
The famous quip about Shakespeare knowing “little latin and less greek” was spoken by Ben Jonson, William Shakespeare’s good friend and intellectual sparring partner and of course, a fellow member of the Chamberlain’s Men and a most talented poet and playwright likewise.
Jonson was the son of High Anglican clergyman, an alumnus of Westminster College and he was twenty-one years younger than Shakespeare. He loved riling his friend up because he wasn’t as sophisticated of breeding, as himself. Nonetheless, there is no doubt that Jonson genuinely loved and admired William and more often praised his exceptionalness.
There is a surviving text by Thomas Fuller, in which he tells of an occasion, during which he was in the company of Jonson and Shakespeare in a London Tavern, where he witnessed the two engage in a splendid intellectual debate for several hours and claimed that William kept bettering Ben.
Ben Jonson knew William of Stratford. If Edward de Vere had been William Shakespeare, do you really think that Ben Jonson wouldn’t have somewhere hinted at it? Twelve years after Shakespeare’s death, Ben Jonson, in a dry response to a theatre review saying that not one single syllable of error came from Shakespeare’s pen, remarked (something to the effect of) “he blotted out a thousand lines – more’s the goodness.”

As for the poetry I quoted, it was to illustrate the rhyming pattern rather than quality.
As for “Oxford Scholars”, I did put it in quotes. Whether someone is regarded as scholarly is often a judgement of posterity. I was listening to someone the other day who had a PhD in football history or something. As per the general tenor of current day “knowledge”, the forms of “scholarship” are often preserved more than their general substance. I think that is a general sentiment we collectively have here in the comments section: authority is by argument rather than badges of office.
A debate serves two purposes in the comments. It allows for the thrashing out of truth between two advocates – notwithstanding I believe myself a juror who has received sufficient info to put in my verdict – and as a sounding board for other people to also feel they may be part of this jury process.
That we are 180 degrees apart on this is just a reality. It is lonely being a truth seeker, for sure.
It isn’t lonely to advocate for a contention in an honest debate between honourable men, Simon. Truthseekers tend to be pensive, even introverted types and I guess, that those of us, who are, by temperament, of a solitary disposition, do occasionally feel pangs of loneliness or a greater or lesser, sense of existential isolation. We seek for those like ourselves, on-line, as well as in life.
Literary controversies are enjoyable stuff for debate. More intellectual sport, than the urgency current affairs brings to contention. It’s why I engaged the conversation, really. I’m just a bit glutted with treating on contemporary evils.

You are an intellect that doubts that simultaneous equations can be solved because you don’t know how to add and subtract. I suspect you have a short attention span that disregards argument because it requires more effort than dealing with the information provided to you.
I do not doubt “aliens”. I doubt they have visited. This is linked to my take on nukes. I have often gone the extra mile with you. That you lack the ability to appreciate nuance is your problem not mine.

It occurs to me that Rixon might close the thread before you have the opportunity to reply. Like Thomas Looney who was mindful of WWI overshadowing what might be regarded as a parochial question, I would like to devote my energies to other enquiries; notwithstanding, I would like perhaps later to resurrect this topic when an article provides a suitable tangent for us.
I will bookmark and address particulars I have not addressed. Suffice to say, in the (unlikely) case of me discovering I am wrong, I will put my hand up and say as such. Given the work necessary – and the thanklessness of it – it might be a while before I’m willing to devote time to it.
