The FBI has searched US President Joe Biden’s home and found six more documents containing classified markings.
Investigators also took possession of some of Mr Biden’s notes, the president’s lawyer said on Saturday night.
The president voluntarily allowed the FBI into his home, but the lack of a search warrant did not dim the extraordinary nature of the search.
It compounded the embarrassment to Mr Biden that started with the disclosure on January 12 that the president’s attorneys had found a “small number” of classified records at a former office at the Penn Biden Center in Washington shortly before the midterm elections. Since then, attorneys found six classified documents in Mr Biden’s Wilmington home library from his time as vice president.
The discoveries have become a political liability as Mr Biden prepares to launch a reelection bid, and they undercut his efforts to portray an image of propriety to the American public after the tumultuous presidency of his predecessor, Donald Trump.
The documents taken by the FBI spanned Mr Biden’s time in the Senate and the vice presidency, while the notes dated to his time as vice president, said Bob Bauer, the president’s personal lawyer.
He added that the search of the entire premises lasted nearly 13 hours. Mr Biden and his wife Jill were not present for the search as they were spending the weekend at their other property in Rehoboth Beach, in Delaware.
The level of classification, and whether the documents removed by the FBI remained classified, was not immediately clear as the Justice Department reviews the records.
“We found a handful of documents were filed in the wrong place,” Mr Biden had told reporters on Thursday. “We immediately turned them over to the Archives and the Justice Department.”
I always find the Hollywood portrayal of the US president intriguing. Invariably he is intelligent decisive, and brave. Before “Independence Day” featuring a fighter pilot hero there were films like the 1964 “Fail Safe” that saw a president – Henry Fonda – deciding that to prevent nuclear war after a “nuke” is accidently dropped on Russia, he must drop a “nuke” on New York in order to maintain “peace”. I recommend the film “Fail Safe” for those waking up to this Cold War fiction. Then there was the film “2012” that also featured Black actor Danny Glover as a decisive president…
It is always important to preserve the veneer of the president representing the people. Hollywood continually crafts this narrative. You have to be a low-life to be US president. Even Kennedy who tried to buck the system was no saint.
Imagine a new Mount Rushmore made up of Clinton, Bush, Obama, and Biden?
And of course, as an Englishman, I fully acknowledge that we are not even dignified by having a British puppet in number 10…
Dirty politics from both sides in a display of corruption that would make the Romans blush. Biden may be a pile of sh!te but that doesn’t make this filthy display acceptable. The President of the United States used to be the highest political office in the world, but its decline since JFK has accelerated exponentially since Hillary Clinton refused to accept her honest defeat in 2016. This has led to many politicians around the world since that date not accepting their electoral loss either, calling it foul play. It’s bringing it all down.
From the highest office to one of the lowest now, its descent so far and so fast it will not survive the fall.
