I lost my smart phone and wallet this Christmas. The wallet was found and returned to me the following day with cards and cash, the phone not. I consider myself very lucky in that.
I was forced to ask why I carry all this stuff? At least 10 pieces of identifying plastic.
When was I last asked to see my driving licence? 30 years ago? Ok it is wanted when collecting an undelivered parcel from the Post Office but I can choose to carry it only when making such a visit.
Debit and credit cards I cancelled which was temporarily problematical but thankfully I had some cash at home to tide me over.
Without the phone I was unable to order sim cards and a replacement phone from eBay though I have a 12 year old mobile which is getting me by, the provider sending me a replacement sim with my existing number.
I learned a lesson. Most cards will stay at home. Keys and phone will stay in the car. When I travel on foot I now have only two things on me – car key and cash unless I require otherwise.
One can argue the camera function is worth having at all times. Ok perhaps carrying cash, car key and a camera is optimum.
Apart from not being able to loose a load of useful/valuable stuff I now don’t have anything to identify me.
I look forward to seeing how this new un-identifiable, un-digital approach will affect my day to day life.
