Tens of thousands of Italians marched through Rome on Saturday calling for peace in Ukraine and urging Italy to stop sending of weapons to fight the Russian invasion.
“No to war. No to sending weapons”, read one large banner carried by protesters, as a vast crowd broke into cries of “give peace a chance”.
NATO founding member Italy has supported Ukraine from the start of the war, including providing it with arms.
New far-right Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has said that will not change and the government has said it is expecting to send more weapons soon.
But some, including former prime minister Giuseppe Conte, have said Italy should be stepping up negotiations instead.
The peace rally was attended by some 30,000 people, Rome police told Italian media.
“The weapons were sent at the beginning on the grounds that this would prevent an escalation,” demonstrator Roberto Zanotto told AFP.
“Nine months later and it seems to me that there’s been an escalation. Look at the facts: sending weapons does not help stop a war, weapons help fuel a war.”
Student Sara Gianpietro said the conflict was being dragged out by arming Ukraine, which “has economic consequences for our country, but for the respect of human rights too”.
The Group of Seven foreign ministers, including Italy, on Friday vowed to continue supporting Ukraine in the fight against Russia.

I think Georgia Meloni is in support of Ukraine. I think that’s why she basically told Berlusconi he needs to keep quiet, because he says the opposite. It seems she’s no saviour though because her first law was to bring in up to six years for people who organise illegal raves. It says raves though some say the wording means it’s likely aimed at the organisers of protests and strikes. So much for this Italian freedom fighter.

In England there is an organisation called the Peace Pledge Union. I sometimes read its publications and I really do get the impression that it is, at least largely, controlled. It goes along with all the fashionable NWO things like LQBQ and it’s stance on Russia (I confess I am not a great reader so I have not read extensively what it has written) seems to me to be all about supporting the anti President Putin groups in Russia. It seems to me to be very controlled by the NWO gang.
It seems to operate at the emotional level rather than the rational level. For example, it has air heads holding up white poppies and other such drivel as opposed to taking a stance which I think would be much more productive for it, in terms of the achievement of its aims, by educating its readers about, for example, the history of false flags which is, of course, one of the main instruments the war mongers use, and have used in the past, to get their wars going.
I think educating people is so important we have enough emotional drivel.
