My understanding is that a “dirty bomb” is a “conventional” bomb seeded with radioactive material. To call it a “nuclear” “dirty” bomb – notwithstanding the reservation on the actuality of “nukes” – is a misnomer.
We heard of “dirty bombs” – along with AIDS, Peak Oil etc – years ago.
The potential deployment of a “dirty bomb” begs serious technological questions about what is possible outside of Hollywood fear porn given that it would appear to be a “step down” from what has been claimed since Hiroshima.
“Suitcase nukes” are another thing we haven’t heard of much later – until some media intelligence agent brings it up…

Another very interesting book is one on the Cuban Missile Crisis, written by an ex Castro man living in the USA. He don’t go the whole hog and call BS on the nuke thing in its entirety, but he did argue very convincingly that Khrushchev was sending over “duds”.
