An interesting update from Denmark’s Health authority. It was published yesterday.
Denmark will no longer offer boosters and vaccines to persons under 50.
This new policy is relatively soft: if someone under 50 insists on having some special risk from Covid, they are still allowed to get the booster. But, in a bit of good news, the general public under 50 is NOT offered boosters.
As for the primary series vaccines (which nobody is taking anymore), they will also “not be offered” to the general public:
I would not describe “not offering” as a ban, because some narrow groups of people under-50 can still get Covid vaccines and boosters, but it is great news overall.
Just curious: does Denmark have some information about these boosters that it is not sharing with us, that made it decide against vaccinating and boosting young people?

European countries are currently experiencing an unusually high death rate, and coronavirus deaths are not the direct reason for this increase. Known as “excess mortality,” people are dying at an unusually high rate in the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Portugal, and Great Britain.
Since April, the death rate has risen sharply in Europe by an average of 11 percent. What is puzzling experts is that these deaths are not directly related to the coronavirus pandemic.

Over the past few months the Office for National Statistics has been recording ‘excess’ non-covid deaths of around 1,000 a week in England and Wales – that is to say deaths above and beyond the level which would be expected at this time of year. Deaths over the summer months have been more in line with the number of deaths which might be expected in a normal winter.
Many of the excess deaths appear to be from heart and circulatory diseases. Recent heatwaves may have contributed negatively to this – warmer weather has long been associated with excess deaths. But the current bulge in excess deaths can be traced back to April, long before the heatwave. There have been suggestions that Covid could have weakened people’s health and that we are seeing a delayed reaction to being infected with the virus. Others point to delays in NHS treatment, with long waits in A&E.

The shift towards a majority of these excess deaths being due to causes other than Covid may also reflect the protective effect of multiple vaccinations, antivirals, and drug treatments, all of which have helped to reduce mortality from the disease.
Of the non-Covid excess deaths over that period, around one in three – 458 – are due to “circulatory” causes, such as heart attacks or strokes.
Allan Cowie, interim chief executive at Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland, said the NHS is being “forced to operate in crisis mode” as a result of the impact of the pandemic on health.
He added: “We’re already seeing a dramatic increase in deaths from stroke and heart disease; nearly 500 more people died of ischaemic heart disease in 2021 compared to 2019 and stroke deaths were higher in 2021 than they were before the pandemic.
“If we don’t see urgent action the NHS will be in a permanent state of crisis management which will affect hard-working NHS staff and the care we receive.”
He [Dr John Montgomery] said: “We’ve got a higher incidence of cancer and our patients tend to present later, with the worst outcomes, so you’re certainly seeing that.
“So you’ve got a patient population with multiple problems presenting later, more severely affected, and with poorer outcomes, and then there’s the whole demand issue.
