Professor responds as the smallest proportion EVER get into top universities

Britain, we are often told, is a deeply racist and intolerant society, in which sinister ‘power structures’ hold back minority ethnic groups, while the white majority push selfishly ahead.
Yet new data flies in the face of this fashionable narrative.
Following a national drive to make undergraduate intakes more ‘diverse’, figures released on Thursday by the Department for Education showed that, for the first time, white young people are now proportionately the least likely of all major ethnic groups to attend our top universities.
Among Britain’s Chinese families, some 40.7 per cent of their youngsters made it to Oxford, Cambridge and others in the elite Russell Group in 2020-21. The figures for Asian young people were 16 per cent. It was 10.7 per cent for black families — and just 10.5 per cent among white ones.
Of course, in some ways, this is an inspirational success story. That children from non-white backgrounds are thriving in Britain’s educational system is something to celebrate.
Commendable, too, are our universities’ efforts to make their student intakes more diverse. Many of these establishments are world-leading and it is right they should be open to anyone with the brains and aptitude to succeed in them.
Given the disparity between the ethnic background of undergraduates at our elite universities and the country at large, our institutions risk looking as if they are more interested in promoting diversity than in shaping the minds of our brightest youngsters whatever their race.
The diversity drive is only part of the story: culture plays a huge role, too. One of the reasons that children from black African families are doing so much better in attending top universities is because their parents are often particularly focused on education.
They put a strong emphasis on family and have low rates of divorce. Such stability helps children flourish.
In contrast, poor, white, working-class communities experience far higher rates of family breakdown, as well as other challenges that jeopardise academic success, from addiction to joblessness and mental and physical health problems. Nevertheless, much of the problem does lie firmly with the universities.
Not so long ago, Oxford, Cambridge and their like were revered centres of learning where young people could expand their horizons and learn to think critically.
Today, they all too often resemble woke citadels, where academics are harassed or sacked if they fail to hold the ‘correct’ views on issues including Brexit, gender and the legacy of the British Empire.
My research has shown that about 80 per cent of academics lean to the Left politically.
The small minority who lean to the Right are far more likely to experience political discrimination and to ‘self-censor’, or hide, their real views on campus.
But if our universities really want to pursue racial equality, they should take a look at some other statistics released this week by the Department for Education.
These revealed the numbers of young people who go to university at all — not just the elite institutions. The results were even more striking. Fully 81 per cent of Chinese children, almost 66 per cent of Asian children and 48 per cent of mixed-race children go to any university nowadays.
The figure for white children? Just 40 per cent.
The numbers are even more damning when you look at the details. Among children who receive free school meals — that is, the white working-class — only 13.6 per cent go to university.
The only ethnic groups with even fewer children making it to university are Roma and Traveller Gipsy communities.
Why are young white working-class children being let down so badly?
Last year, I found some answers as I advised the Government’s Education Committee. We produced a report highlighting how decades of neglect and muddled policy thinking have contributed to this sorry state of affairs.
But few among the metropolitan Twitterati, who cling to the notion that Britain is ‘institutionally racist’, are willing to speak up for the white working class, let alone the universities who peddle the same eccentric worldview.
While it’s vital that our universities do all they can to attract promising youngsters from every background, the Education Committee’s report was clear. The pendulum has swung too far the other way.
We made particular mention of the dubious arguments that have been imported from the U.S. and are now swirling around our education system. These would have you believe most Britons benefit from ‘white privilege’ — and should apologise for who they are.
These ideas are not supported by empirical evidence. Indeed, they may have contributed directly to the neglect of white working-class pupils.
And the problem is getting worse. Only this week, the Don’t Divide Us group found nearly one in four local councils are actively promoting a divisive brand of ‘anti-racism’ in schools, pushing concepts such as ‘white privilege’ and ‘unconscious bias’ into the classroom.
Meanwhile, the think-tank Neon has produced a report showing how, although universities have many initiatives to attract minority groups, they simply don’t invest nearly the same amount of money and energy into encouraging white working-class children.
This hypocritical disparity was never more apparent than in 2018, when the millionaire rapper Stormzy announced he was funding a scheme to provide scholarships for black students studying at Cambridge.
Good for him. But the following year, philanthropist Sir Bryan Thwaites’s attempts to fund similar scholarships for poor white students were turned down by both Dulwich College and Winchester College — two of Britain’s top private schools — for fear that it would be regarded as racial discrimination.
The double standards are glaring.
But the woke brigade brooks no criticism — even, or perhaps especially, from the very minorities it purports to represent. In March, Nottingham University withdrew an honorary degree from Tony Sewell, the black educational consultant who had been appointed to chair a race commission by Boris Johnson, and who had challenged the claim that Britain is ‘institutionally racist’.
That was the university’s right, of course. But Nottingham had no problem expanding its reach into China and handing out honorary degrees to leading Chinese Communists.
Other universities are equally willing to take money from the ghouls of Beijing — a regime that is torturing and enslaving Uighur Muslims as I write — while performatively obsessing over ‘decolonising’ their curriculums and tying themselves in knots over the role some of their historic benefactors may or may not have played in the Transatlantic slave trade.
We need to challenge this dangerous and divisive woke ideology — one that is spinning such a misleading picture of modern Britain. Ours is not an institutionally racist country: quite the opposite.
As the latest statistics suggest, it is one of the best places in the world to be a member of an ethnic minority.
At the same time, we need to speak up loudly for white working-class children and recognise that the noble aim of increasing diversity in the classroom and the lecture hall — especially when couched in the language of ‘oppression’ and ‘white privilege’ — has costs as well.
Only by doing these things will we ensure that yet another generation of white working-class children do not find themselves so unfairly left behind — and watch aghast as our universities become even less representative of the country at large.

They are such an acceptable target that even their partner has become an acceptable target so long as they’re from the working class but not black or queer.
The nefarious plot to exclude the indigenous population has never been more evident and in-your-face than the tv ads.

It seems high profile positions within the media culture as a whole have been totally taken over by an obviously unstable woke culture that has its own questionable agenda and this unhealthy imbalance of power needs to be dealt with and replaced with a more ethical standard.
When Evil is dominant, Blacks, being evil, move ahead
Professor Mathew Goodwin calls attention very ably to anti-White discriminatory practices. Good for him. Those practices are disgraceful. But it is as well to recall that working class boys tended not to go to university (Kier Stramer is among the exceptions) before they were (arguably) excluded for being White because the ‘diversity’ bs began to hammer down on British society. But we should be considering other factors in this picture, particularly the cultural ones.
It is not surprising that many Chinese students get to Oxford and Cambridge. The learning culture in Chinese societies has always been robust. Chinese students in foreign context are famous for their extraordinarily self-demanding study routines. And more broadly, there is the immigrant factor, in which ‘bettering oneself’ in the new country is prominent. Immigrant parents encourage their children’s scholastic achievement. (One might go on along these lines.)
Working class boys, by and large, do not have that parental push towards university education. But then, working-class pride remains a healthy part of British culture, in which physical work is not despised. (It sure is among, e.g. the Chinese!) The image of the working class boys in the above picture says a lot: They are well dressed, well fed, healthy looking boys. Their builder, plumber, etc. fathers earn much more than their teacher who holds a First from Cambridge. These boys will not be breaking their backs to get into our lesser or greater universities. Instead, they will be gaining their trade qualifications, and looking forward to raking in, ASAP, the cash they command .
And what’s wrong with that? Certainly, what working class boys do is much better for them, and for our tradespersons-short society, than their wasting three or fours years on gaining a ‘degree’ in Design, Dance, Diversity Studies, etc., then finding themselves without a job in the end.
The reason foreigners make up the largest number in universities is that all universities charge two times as much for foreigners, so they accept all foreign applicants and only then fill up with the half as profitable whiteys. A large numer of the foreigners can’t even speak english and are therefore competely unable to understand any lectures, which results in most lectures having less than ten people in them — ask anyone that’s been to university in britain and they’ll tell you that. It’s been that way forever. There’s nothing new in it. Also, whitey is forced to take out a huge loan to pay the university for the pointless degree, which they are then forced to spend the next 30 years paying off. This makes anyone with any sense not apply to begin with, as starting a job without a degree will lead to far less debt in the future. The degree will count as nothing beyond your first job application, after which the new employer ignores it and takes references from your previous jobs as the deciding factor. These are the reasons for less whiteys in british universities, whatever the ‘professor’ in his ivory tower believes.
Britain was made great by its engineers and builders who constructed sewers, canals, and its architecture. That the Chinese go to univeristy in more numbers is no recommendation; they wear masks and have shown the characteristics of sheep and hoop jumpers more than anyone. During the last couple of years I recall seeing a video of just one (American/Canadian?) Chinese dissident.
Mechanical intelligence unallied to a level creativity-courage are no basis for a civilisation. Genuine progress is made possible by no-men not yes-men. A little bit of testosterone is needed.

Quite the reverse – most are the products of single mother slags and have welfare money rained down on them. Grammar Schools were instituted, very precisely, in order to give working-class boys and girls, the chance to go to university. Where they survive still, as they do in Kent, where I live, they no longer fulfill their original function and, like the universities, they’ve sold out to highest bidders and have become boarding schools for the children of the metropolitan commuter rich.
I went to a Grammar School and I have university degrees. I know who I am though.

Yes: Foreign students are very popular with university administrators: they bring in much needed money. But they do not count as our student body, as these administrators point out. What they do not tell us is that we have universities where foreign students, particularly the Middle Eastern ones, are the overwhelming majority in the student populations, or even the entirety of it. Their English language is woefully inadequate for a university education. So their lecturers tell them to get their work edited before they submit it for evaluation. These students can well afford an editor. They can afford writers, too. The sooner they equip themselves with the latter, the sooner they secure their PhDs.
In short: We have several universities that effectively sell degrees to foreign students. But these universities are funded on par with all universities, despite that they are pragmatically not available to our own students, who cannot finance editors and writers, and are not able to communicate with fellow students because they do not speak Arabic. Now, that is dirty.

Decent universities force attendance, provide constant coursework to force study, and the people setting the coursework mark the submissions (as they’re best qualified to do so).

As some one has already stated the education system for the working class is geared to churn out factory and cannon fodder. Even in my day the system was not designed to produce self sufficient tough patriotic boys and the truth about anything definitely not. Traveller boys are far better equipped for this world at least they continue their way of life because they simply pull their kids out of school once they have the 3Rs. Hopefully my grandson will be ready for this world he’s learning martial arts,boxing and he’s just been enrolled in a rugby club when the times right he’ll be pulled from “school” and follow his dad into construction and the school is reminded regularly “no leftwing/liberal” brainwashing. I remember taking the 11plus in a concrete-slabbed hut in the local “working class’ primary school.
It was in February and it just so happened that the boiler had broken down overnight.
How cold was it? The contents of my inkwell had frozen!🤣
The exam went ahead anyway… with those that had them wearing gloves and balaclavas!
When some parents later complained in a “Class Action” sort of deal – asking for the test to be retaken in more hospitable circumstances – they were informed by Cheshire Education Authority that, since no-one from that school was expected to pass the 11+ anyway, retaking it would be a fruitless exercise.. and therefore the request was rejected.
Needless to say, in spite of the harrowing circumstances- and a bent nib or two “yours truly” passed with flying colours 😂

It depends if they’re “british”. If they’re a foreigner with a british passport they get the same treatment as the real british, because they have the same amount of money. If they’re a foreigner that lives in another country they have to pay twice as much tuition and lab fees. These people are children of rich foreigners and make up as large a percentage of the students at all universities as the university can manage (they accept them all, no matter what their grades, no matter if they can speak english or not). So, no, they don’t get their tuition paid (nobody does, not even the english, not unless you get a place on a degree that’s sponsored by some corporation, where they’ll insist on as many from whatever country the corporation comes from as possible). As for loans, the rich foreigners don’t need them, because they’re rich, but some might be borderline and have them, but the loan will be taken out in their own country. What you’ve got to realise is that british universities are foreign owned money machines. They do whatever it takes to maximise profit. You should be used to that in britain, as well as being used to the crap that goes along with it. Compare that to say, america, where most universities are forced to take all applicants from the state they’re in that make the grade, then all americans that make the grade, and only then can they look for foreigners to fill up the gaps. That’s the difference — america protects its education for its people, so america has better educated people (believe it or not).
