Western governments have invested much in Ukraine. Washington bankrolled Kiev with billions, despite facing major economic shortfalls at home. While Western corporate giants have also been very generous.
In recent years three giant Western companies – Cargill, DuPont and Monsanto – bought seventeen million hectares of Ukrainian agricultural land, despite fierce local opposition.
That seventeen million hectares means that nearly 60 percent of Ukraine’s total farmland is now owned and controlled by foreign transnational corporations!!!
It seems that Monsanto in particular intended to use its Ukrainian farmland as a means to break the European boycott of its genetically engineered produce. The hope was that with its Ukrainian farmland, Monsanto could circumvent the ban of its GM produce in some European countries.
Russia’s invasion will obviously change that as Moscow has banned Genetically Modified produce. So whether Monsanto makes good on its investment or not depends on what happens on the battlefield.
And right now things aren’t looking too promising for Kiev, or Monsanto. Ed.

Ten months before Russian troops poured into Ukraine, that country’s President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a bill into law authorizing the private sale of farmland, reversing a moratorium that had been in place since 2001.
An earlier administration in Ukraine had instituted the moratorium in order to halt further privatization of The Commons and small farms, which were being bought up by oligarchs and concentrated in fewer and fewer hands. As documented in a series of critical reports over ten years by the Oakland Institute based in California, the moratorium on land sales in Ukraine aimed to prevent the acquisition and consolidation of farmland in the hands of the domestic oligarch class and foreign corporations.
The marketization of farmland is part of a series of policy “reforms” that the International Monetary Fund stipulated as a precondition enabling Ukraine to receive $8 billion in loans from the IMF.[2]
Even amid the pandemic there has been “wide-ranging opposition from the Ukrainian public to reversing that ban, with over 64 percent of the people opposed to the creation of a land market, according to an April 2021 poll.”[3]
Additionally, the IMF loan conditions required that Ukraine must also reverse its ban on genetically engineered crops, and enable private corporations like Monsanto to plant its GMO seeds and spray the fields with Monsanto’s Roundup. In that way, Monsanto hopes to break the boycott by a number of countries in Europe of its genetically engineered corn and soy.
It is the thesis of this essay that agricultural competition over land use between the U.S. and Russia—two gigantic capitalist countries with the most powerful nuclear arsenals in the world—is a neglected but important force driving the war in Ukraine.

In early post-Soviet Russia, the ‘oligarch’ Khodorkovsky was poised to sell a big stake in his Yukon to a major Western oil distributor, TOTAL That would have endangered Russian national security, for its economy is resourses based, not fiat-money generated. Putin stopped that sale, and Khodorkovsky spent ten years getting used to prison food.
In contrast, the Zelenski mob actually sold to the criminal organisation Monsanto a vast area of Ukraine’s uniquely fertile soil, thus enabling its cultivation of genetically modified crops, notably wheat. Such crops are forbidden by law in Russia.
My two paragraphs above serve as a summary of why Ukraine cannot be allowed to exist independently of Russia: Ukraine cannot generate a government that is not grossly corrupt, in the present case so corrupt that it does not resile even from the malicious sale of Ukrainian land to the criminal organisation Monsanto that is poised to destroy that land’s superior wheat production with its genetically engineered crop, that, once established, will pollute and destroy the wheat crops of neighbouring lands, including those of Russia.
Russia must rein in this ‘oligarchs’-dominated Ukraine, for in this condition, it is a danger to itself and to its neighbour countries.

I read your excellent post as giving, among other things, a major reason why Ukraine cannot remain self-governing: It cannot protect itself from political establishments seriously injurious to the Ukrainian people. In the present day, Ukraine’s abundant natural resources are in the control of the ‘oligarchs’, who alone reap its rewards. Meanwhile, the Ukranian people are living in dire poverty: Their average incone is the equivalent of a little over $6,000. Compare this with the average Russian income, a little over: $29,000. And we must remeber that Ukraine, like Russia, is natural-resources rich. So the ghost of Kaganovic is still active in Ukraine.

This happened all over the west. Monsanto gave billions to the fascist dictators in all the western countries to allow it to plant its crap everywhere. In britain, the bitch thatcher told all the environmentalists that she just wanted to allow it to be tested, then she had it planted in farms spread all throughout the uk so that all the soil would be contaminated. This is meaningless. We’re always being told that the average income of such and such is $10 a whatever — so what? What matters isn’t how far your money would go if you went to america, but how far your money goes where you live. Quite obviously $10 a whatever is enough to survive wherever that is, otherwise the people they’re talking about would be dead. Oh no, they can’t afford wide screen tvs… how do they carry on living? In china, you can buy a phone that’s exactly the same as an iBollox for $10 — how much does one cost where you live?

Your “living standards” are meaningless too. In the uk, the “living standards” on the south coast are vastly higher than the “living standards” of someone “living” in birmingham. The “living standards” of someone living in a slum in the ukraine are vastly lower than the “living standards” of the “president” of the ukraine. You can take the entire income of india and divide it by the number of people and get a “living standard”, and thereby conveniently ignore the majority who live in poverty because the “average income” says they aren’t poor. America has the highest “average income” on earth (ignoring tiny islands) yet it has millions of homeless. Under your way of thinking, the fact that the average african doesn’t have a car and a tv means they are living in the “third world”, yet their life may be far superior to yours in every other way. The uk is a cesspool compared to america, yet they supposedly have similar “living standards”. Get it now?
