A UK citizen who fought for Ukrainian forces in Mariupol before surrendering in mid-April has told RT that he regrets his decision to fight for Kiev.
Aiden Aslin said the Western media had played a major role in convincing him to support the Ukrainian cause and eventually made him a “pawn” in a political game.
He was speaking to RT in an interview before a court in Donetsk sentenced him and two other foreigners to death on charges of acting as mercenaries and seeking to seize power by force in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR).
Aslin said he had followed the Ukrainian conflict since 2014 and was “originally pro-Russian” and “pro-Donbass.” He supported Crimea’s reunification with Russia and believes the people of Donbass have a right to independence.
“My views started to change after I started seeing media reports and stuff that was basically saying that it was not locals but the Russian soldiers that were doing everything [in Donbass],” Aslin admitted, adding that he was watching CNN as well as BBC and Fox News. Since surrendering to the DPR militia, he has found that he has more in common with the Donbass soldiers than Ukrainians with whom he had fought.
“I was kind of duped”
The Briton said he even received threats from fighters of the infamous Azov Battalion, known for its neo-Nazi ideology. Aslin said he believed Azov had changed since being incorporated in the Ukrainian National Guard but eventually saw firsthand that “they have not changed much.”
The UK national had previously fought Islamic State (IS, former ISIS) terrorists in Syria together with the Kurdish YPG militia and has a YPG insignia as a tattoo on his arm. When an Azov fighter saw that tattoo two years ago, he told Aslin he “wanted to cut it off,” the Briton said. “I told him I was a leftist and his attitude changed” completely, Aslin said, adding that the Azov regiment member began to see him “not as a friend but… more like an enemy” after that exchange.
He was also skeptical about the level of training in the Ukrainian Army. “They are not as professional as they would like to be,” he said, calling their artillery training “substandard” to the extent that they can miss military targets and hit civilian infrastructure instead.
“Another factor you have to consider [in case of the Ukrainian] Army is that there is a lot of alcohol involved,” he added.
Looking back, Aslin said he should have avoided the Ukrainian forces and sought a civilian job instead. “I wish I had done things differently and not chosen to be a political pawn in the military system,” he stated, blaming Kiev for its failure to end the conflict.
“They [the Ukrainian government] could have easily ended the war. They had the opportunity but they chose not to, mainly because I think money was involved,” Aslin said. He now feels abandoned by both Kiev and London.
All his attempts to contact the Ukrainian side from captivity have been unsuccessful, said the former combatant.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has not mentioned Aslin’s case “even once” since the Briton surrendered, he said. Meanwhile, UK officials who he and his lawyers have contacted just keep saying he is “of utmost priority” for Ukraine.
“I have to ask the Ukrainian government, ‘If you consider us, as you say, heroes, why do you act as if we do not exist?’” Aslin said.
He urged other foreigners who might consider joining Kiev’s cause not to be “duped into a war that is one you should not be fighting.”

Some here may recall the case of Samantha Orobator, a ‘British’ woman sentenced to death in Laos for drug smuggling in 2009?
She was born in Nigeria in 1988, came to the UK when young. To cut a long story short, she tried to smuggle heroin in Laos, got caught and was sentenced to death.
THE organisation, Reprieve, run by Clive Stafford-Smith, went to help her. She was, overwhelmingly, told to somehow get pregnant and a British man, also serving a sentence, masturbated into some receptacle, with which she inseminated herself with. She got pregnant. Her sentence was then reduced to life.
They managed to get her shipped back to the UK, where her sentence was drastically reduced and she is now a free woman. Shami Chakrabati, the rug munching, racist, also worked for Reprieve at the time I believe.
I wonder if Reprieve will be doing the same for this man? What do you think?
I read some of this.
The fake news says that he’s been in UKraine for years fighting in the Dombas and later in Mariupol. He’s a bit of a thicko (no surprises there) if he didn’t realise that the UKraine Nazis were shelling civilians, which is a war crime. So why didn’t he leave?
What he is saying, sound like he was pre-prepared with these mixed up statements alluding to confusion, and that he was swayed by the fake news.
This morning the fake news has hammered home this notion that these men were in the UKraine military and should be treated as combatants. At this point, I should mention that UKraine has lost 90% of its tax revenue, so the US and UK are paying the wages of the Nazis UKraine military. Have these men disclosed their bank accounts and payments history, along with emails, and phone data? I doubt it.
As mercenaries, they have zero rights under international law. I remember some ex SAS officer who was cought in an African coup which was organised in London, & probably with MI6 help and blessing. This ex SAS officer, who was a mercenary was thrown in a not so nice jail and left to rot. I can’t remember what happened to him, but the UK regime did sweet FA to help him.
Things are a little different in UKraine, because I believe there are thousands of MI6 and CIAda funded mercenaries in UKraine. While they are paid to fight, their next responsibility is to not get caught, and they are told this. Get out of trouble before you get caught.
If these chaps had been caught by the US in one of their murderous shock and awe attacks, they would be either killed, or termed as terrorists, tortured, and either taken to a dark site, or Guantanamo for decades long illegal incarceration.
The court which tried these men is the best court they have, given the circumstances. They will probably be exchanged, because on the individual level, they are pretty insignificant thicko sheeple, and this guy even admits he’s a thicko sheeple. My own view, is that the Russians and the breakaway Dombas forces should set an example and shoot these fockers with full media honours. There are two benefits here. One, other mercenaries will know the score, that they are just meat. The second, is that MI6 and the CIAda will have to up their pay rates, bonuses, and offer some sort of payments to the families of those shot for war crimes or acts of terrorism, assuming they don’t offer these benefits already.
These were locally tried, but my guess is that many more mercenaries and active service personnel are in Russia, and even in Moscow being interrogated, and that neither side are reporting much of this.
So he’d done it before in Syria. And he’s described as a “UK national”. In other words, he’s an immigrant. I wonder where he came from to begin with? Wherever it was, it’s not normal or “nice” behaviour to go to someone else’s country, pick up a gun and start shooting people, all in return for money. That’s what multi cultural leads to. I wonder how many other “poor misguided souls” were shooting people in the ukraine for cash?

The US has held people for twenty years and they’ve never been tried, while the UK tried Julian Assange who never did anything illegal, and for whom the US had to invent new meaning in old espionage laws which never said what they say it did. If I were young and in the uk I’d try and start some kind of peaceful (at first) fight back. It wouldn’t work of course, but I’d try it. Mercenaries have to be recruited. They fight for pay, so, who is his paymaster? Not the Ukrainian government, I would hazard. Nor any other government. The only real possibility, is that he is a hired killer in the employ of an N.G.O; most likely, BlackRock or Vanguard.
It’s actually quite difficult to access someone’s military service record in the U.K. It can be done via F.O.I. act requests but otherwise, the Ministry of Defense only consents to a next of kin’s request to see a soldier’s service records – after an administrative fee of around £40, I believe.
Should a soldier have distinguished himself by winning honours or medals, then the Medals Office of the M.o.D. keeps a record of all recipients of military decorations.
Regiments keep Unit War Diaries but only officers are usually named in these.
Should a soldier have been wounded in combat then his name will be held by the Department of Health and would be reasonably easy to access, upon request. The only other viable route for verifying someone’s military service, would be by way of army pensions records, held by the Department of Social Security but in this particular case, our hoodwinked mercenary, Mr. Aslin, was evidently fit for battle, so that avenue would likely prove a dead end anyway.
Is he actually a former British soldier? We don’t know and perhaps can’t know, for sure. Even if a former comrade of his were to step forward to verify his identity, how could we be sure that his witness were speaking the truth? We can’t.
There is something “artificial” about Aiden Aslin. Even his forename seems convenient, as if calculated to invoke the spirit of Lieutenant-Colonel Colin Mitchell of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. (My grandad’s regiment during W.W. II.)
