The term “conspiracy theory” became a negative, pejorative “meme” thru the hidden machinations of the Central Intelligence Agency immediately after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. This is not supposition, but rather historical fact. Prior to the Kennedy assassination, the term “conspiracy theory” was not considered a negative or pejorative, but simply a method of connecting the dots of history to reveal certain patterns of evidence which isolated inquiry of events often overlooked.
After November 22, 1963, the term “conspiracy theory” became a negative “meme.” From “The Unz Review” of September 5th, 2016, written by Ron Unz, we find a very thorough examination of just how and why the CIA decided to morph the term “conspiracy theory” into the negative connotation this term carries with it today:
Wrote Unz: The “….use of that highly loaded phrase is reserved for those theories, whether plausible or fanciful, that do not possess the endorsement stamp of establishmentarian approval…. If ownership and control of our television stations and other major media outlets suddenly changed, the new information regime would require only a few weeks of concerted effort to totally invert all of our most famous ‘conspiracy theories’ in the minds of the gullible American public.”
As Mr. Unz points out, by the simple expedient of associating images and imagery with story lines, a subconscious “link” can be easily manufactured in the minds of an uncritical populace. “In the initial weeks and months following the 2001 attacks, every American media organ was enlisted to denounce and vilify Osama Bin Laden, the purported Islamicist master-mind, as our greatest national enemy, with his bearded visage endlessly appearing on television and in print, soon becoming one of the most recognizable faces in the world. But as the Bush Administration and its key media allies prepared a war against Iraq, the images of the Burning Towers were instead regularly juxtaposed with mustachioed photos of dictator Saddam Hussein, Bin Laden’s arch-enemy. As a consequence, by the time we attacked Iraq in 2003, polls revealed that some 70% of the American public believed that Saddam was personally involved in the destruction of our World Trade Center.
By that date I don’t doubt that many millions of patriotic but low-information Americans would have angrily denounced and vilified as a ‘crazy conspiracy theorist’ anyone with the temerity to suggest that Saddam had not been behind 9/11, despite almost no one in authority having ever explicitly made such a fallacious claim.”
Prof. Lance deHaven-Smith, former president of the Florida Political Science Association, was the author of Conspiracy Theory in America. According to Unz, thru the expedient of a timely FOIA disclosure, Professor deHaven-Smith’s book supported the unsurprising revelation that “…the CIA was very likely responsible for the widespread introduction of ‘conspiracy theory’ as a term of political abuse, having orchestrated that development as a deliberate means of influencing public opinion.”
As the 60’s drew to a close, more and more people began to question the conclusions of The Warren Commission that Lee Harvey Oswald, the “lone gunman,” was actually responsible for the killing of President Kennedy. Further, there was increasing speculation that some of America’s foremost leaders had actually been involved in the planning and execution of Kennedy’s assassination. So “…as a means of damage control, the CIA distributed a secret memo to all its field offices requesting that they enlist their media assets in efforts to ridicule and attack such critics as irrational supporters of ‘conspiracy theories.’ Soon afterward, there suddenly appeared statements in the media making those exact points, with some of the wording, arguments, and patterns of usage closely matching those CIA guidelines. The result was a huge spike in the pejorative use of the phrase, which spread throughout the American media, with the residual impact continuing right down to the present day. Thus, there is considerable evidence in support of this particular ‘conspiracy theory’ explaining the widespread appearance of attacks on ‘conspiracy theories’ in the public media.” Concludes Unz: “….the traditional American tendency to regard elite conspiracies as a real but harmful aspect of our society was gradually stigmatized as either paranoid or politically dangerous, laying the conditions for its exclusion from respectable discourse.”
I am in agreement with Unz in describing the genesis of how our present perception of the term, “conspiracy theory” was purposely developed into a pejorative dismissal by minions of the CIA working thru their toadies in the mass media to constantly impart a negative spin to anyone who questioned the official government story of John F. Kennedy’s assassination.
The curious question remains just why it behooved the CIA to take it upon themselves to turn the phrase “conspiracy theory” into a pejorative “meme” — unless, of course, they had something to hide and needed to create a psychological crutch that would deter serious researchers by painting a societal target on their backs as being “out of the mainstream” or “out in left field” or worse, lunatics. Apparently, The Agency felt the hot breath of investigators like Attorney Jim Garrison of New Orleans breathing down their collective necks and this was their psychological insurance policy to stop them in their tracks.
Of course, I do not suggest that all conspiracies are “true.” That would be ludicrous. Genuine conspiracy theorists are always willing to change their theory should new evidence be revealed. As Unz clarifies: “Not even the most conspiratorially minded individual suggests that all conspiracies are true, merely that some of them might be.”
What I do posit is that when evidence can be presented linking people, events, causes, monetary interests and intellectual philosophies in obvious patterns of benefit, it is absurd NOT to consider the possibility or the validity of a hidden agenda.
A quote by the late (assassinated?) former director of The CIA clarifies The Agency’s contempt for the American Public as well as their tacit admission to use the meme “conspiracy theory” to drive their favored narrative du jour:
“We’ll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false.”
–William Casey, CIA Director, from a first staff meeting in 1981
Remember: Something that might be considered to be a “conspiracy theory” does not exclude it from being a conspiracy fact! The ability to discern hidden truths by connecting the dots to seemingly disparate elements of historical reality can sometimes lead to even deeper revelations. What many researchers have concluded, sometimes barely above a whisper, is that History, rather than being a seemingly random series of events, is far more often a landscape of intrigues, plots and… conspiracies.
I would hazard to say that rather than being the exception, conspiracies are the rule; that is, conspiracies are the actual operational model of History, based upon multiple conspiracies, sometimes acting in concert, sometimes opposed to one another, but always revealing far more than initially meets the eye when one bothers to dig beneath the apparent “random” surface reality that hides their significance.
Please remember the true genesis of “conspiracy theory” or “conspiracy theorist” the next time you hear or read of someone being marginalized because what they hypothesize has not been pre-approved and pre-packaged by The Establishment to promote their point-of-view. Not only do conspiracies exist, but if Truth is to account for any explanation of events, conspiracies are the rule rather than the exception in the unfolding events on our planet.

I’ve said for decades that “government” wouldn’t be possible WITHOUT conspiracies. Government is, after all, rule by criminals and the descendants of criminals that think they “own” us purely because their ancestors STOLE everything that rightly belongs to us.
As just one example of this theft, what is “employment” if not a form of slavery in which the “employer” steals 95% of our true earnings?
Recently we’ve seen Dan Andrews raving like a lunatic about “anti-vaxxers” as if WE (yes, I’m an anti-vaxxer and proud of it) are the scum of the Earth, when all we want is to keep our bodies healthy and pure because we KNOW the harmful effects of injected chemicals. It’s NOT conspiracy “theory”, but an actual conspiracy against us, like so many others.
Omg, this old chestnut. JFK is not a conspiracy theory, it’s not a theory. It is crime, and therefore it is a conspiracy.
Covid is a criminal conspiracy on multiple levels. They’ve just found another gene which varies depending on race and region. In both cases, Southern Asians are hit hard. The Poles have it more than white Brits.
Why would a spanking new virus (BIOWEAPON) have these traits?
After his crimes, Brexit, & Covid, Boris wants out, he’s wanted out for a long time. This is a criminal Conspiracy, because the posts move, it’s a new face, a new language, so the fake news can change the narratives.
The attempted coup in Kazakhstan was a criminal conspiracy that no doubt involved hundred of sheeple in the UK on varying levels of criminality, but who gives a xxxx?
An excellent thoughtpiece, LCVincent! I appreciate the concise clarity with which you summarized the pejorativation of “that phrase” — my preferred spelling in context, “CONs’ Piracy” theory and facts. I also concur whole-heartedly with your call to restore proper meaning to this domain of critical thinking, a daunting task given the blanketing fog of disinformation and lies. After all, no doubt well before Edward Bernays, Mass Media evolved to influence directly Mass Mind, extending to filtering content and blinding insight!
I have a two word comment prompted by one statement you wrote: “What many researchers have concluded, sometimes barely above a whisper, is that History, rather than being a seemingly random series of events, is far more often a landscape of intrigues, plots and… conspiracies.” MILES MATHIS. A preeminent conspiracy theorist of our time, that man does not whisper!
If one wishes to test one personal mettle as a 21st Century conspiracy theorist, then I recommend your undertaking (!) reading essays by Miles Mathis. Advanced study would include, in particular, Abraham Lincoln’s assassination as a “manufactured event” and, then, if you still feel up to it, the “faked assassinations” of both JFK and RFK. Graduate level “dot connecting” indeed!
Fauci said recently anti-vaxxers are flat-earthers, but to claim we’re flat-earthers is just a conspiracy theory of his own. His claim is nonsense, intended to denigrate a whole sector of society in just one silly phrase, yet his “conspiracy theory” more closely fits the negative connotation idiots like himself apply to it.
Wait until he’s being tried or lynched, see how much of a conspiracy theory it is.
Samuel Clements once said that it is easier to fool someone than convince them that they have been fooled. The US population has been fooled for the last hundred years, or more, by Satanic Jews. Yet,
there are idiots today who believe the 911 LIE and the HoloHOAX.
all people in their right mind know
that politics + state dont works without
conspiration since the beginning of
powerconcentration. the jew media try
to blame people of truth as conspirator-
theorist(or terrorists) like those goyim haters
like to call them antisemites . we are just
people of truth and they are the liers from
the beginning of their master .
It doesn’t really matter, since its just semantics. Its not truth that wins, but power. All that matters is if your group/cult controls the government, media, banks, corporations, schools, military of a State. Then the truth/untruth is employed by & subservient to the interests/objectives/power of the State/cult.
I am quite apathetic about the term “conspiracy”. The reality is such that the moneyed classes call the shots, and always have. Most of the coups and revolutions we read about in history books were just political theatre, pure and simple. Transferring power to yet another safe pair of hands who will protect the old elite’s business interests. That was the case with “decolonization”, “end of Communism”, and no doubt just about every other watershed event before that.
It also helps to realize that the moneyed classes all play for the same team. Conflict is manufactured and artificially propped up so that the taxpayer can finance obscene military and surveillance budgets. US and Russia, US and China, Israel and the Arab states – they’re all BFFs, and they will let their own people starve before they give up on accumulating ever more US T-bills.
So don’t waste your time with political news. Better build some real knowledge of things that nurture you and empower you.

I’m sorry but Miles Mathis is a total crackpot. One has to be careful in dismissing such characters as shills, as most of them suffer from serious mental illness.
Miles may be right on about 5% of issues. 95% of what he says is so unhinged and loony that it seems the term “conspiracy theorist”, with all its pejorative meanings, was designed to delineate someone like him. To him, everything, I mean EVERYTHING is fake. That’s garbage. For example: he claims that the Twin Towers were never brought down and are still standing in NYC (yes, that’s how insane he is), that JFK is alive and secretly running the U.S. government (no, that’s not a joke, and I dare anyone to read his 35page “research” on it), that pi is equal to 5 according to his groundbreaking math, and Hitler and Stalin were the same person (yes, he says that). I mean, the guy is deranged loon.
Don’t waste your time on his garbage … or just have a look to satisfy your own curiosity. But no one can deny how mental the guy is.
WWII was probably our Waterloo, our Culloden. Our last stand. To all intents and purposes It’s probably all over for us now.
We were, and are, active participants in our own demise, and that’s the really sad thing.
“Conspiracy” used to be an ordinary word, with a clearly defined meaning, absent of the multiple prejudicial inferences it now suggests.
An old history teacher of mine had a favoured polemic, which he would introduce as a debating gambit occasionally, exhorting of us, that “all history is either conspiracy or cock-up, depending on your view. I myself hold to the theory of history as a cock-up rather than a conspiracy.”
To be fair to him, it was the 1980’s and the noun, “conspiracy” most definitely didn’t nuance as it does now.
I wonder sometimes if Gurdjieff wasn’t the wisest of all the twentieth-century esotericists.. He would just invented neologisms, to counter mind-control, via the manipulation of language.
If, after all, you’re saying that “much-withinswithworth-meet,” who could possibly know that you’re referring to the World Economic Forum and in a manner, unbeknowingly to them, that’s really quite perscrotogratidly?
History is replete with ‘conspiracies’. All of the most important events in history are the result of ‘conspiracy’. Yet we who point this out are those one who are undermined, ridiculed and marginalised at every turn.
This is where we are…
So far as I can see, most of Miles Mathis’ theses are based upon the assumption that because one name sounds slightly (though not really) like another name, those people are obviously closely related, and in league in some terrible undertaking. And also that all (ALL) important historical events are completely staged.
Risible nonsense.
I’ve given the bloke a chance, but it mainly seems very silly to me.
An early run-through of the subsequent Hollow-hoax nonsense.

In the early days of Gog ol. I would type in any topic and add “conspiracy” to the search. And it would take me straight to the conspiracies. Easy peazy
“Civilization is a Conspiracy against Reality.” – Anon.
When a Blue Pill moron sneers at ‘conspiracies’, I answer thus.
Those two thieves watching your house or car, planning to steal. In law, that’s a conspiracy. The crooked local official fiddling a building permission. That’s a conspiracy too. As is the politician, civil servant or doctor covering up a scandal.
You are surrounded by conspiracies.
Stay away from the Flat-Earthers, UFOs and Crop Circles. They are deliberately thrown in to discredit the real conspiracies.
The best thing to do with language is use it correctly and shun all their euphemisms, dysphemisms and diversions.
Most books, historical or fictional are rarely a lone person but, like C Wright Mills “Power Elite” to the Platonic Nobel Lie and as far back as history can be traced, 2 or more people are by far the normal act of people, the “useful idiot” is a theme for those who believe in the act justifies the means to an end. The bigger the lie, the more people involved such as the Illuminati or other such stupid ideas that are actually much greater and of a foundation that is central Asian since the use of usury, gold and silver for the priests and teachers as god would accept nothing less. Today we call them bankers, investors, vulture capitalists, communist oligarch, capitalist/fascist oligarchs and Plutocracies and the whole world runs like a casino with hidden agendas from every angle of every man made institution.
I’m 65 and I’ve always known since my parents knew what BS the Kennedy assassination explanation was even before the video (and there are still some which makes them in the term used by Eugenicists “Idiots” the lowest of the low which is worse than Moron as Morons can do some work without thinking but idiots can’t understand / accomplish anything.
We are now rushing into a world of rampant idiocy and morons as education has been for hundreds of years, based on inference and lies with no real scientific proof with perhaps 2 exceptions and only one I would say is true and that is the conservation of energy (cannot make energy out of less energy which sums up the green revolution – watch the paid liars on “Planet of the Humans”. We are all taught through the P T Barnum school of reality, manufactured for what every you want it to be. Gustav LeBon’s “The Crowd” talks of how to take advantage of a situation or crisis and getting the desired result from dying for a lie (usually wars, but it carries over), to selection of a Jury.

A conspiracy is an ancient term documented in the Holy Bible. It describes a powerful negative connotation as you will see in the passages below.
History does have a tendency to repeat itself, as we are witnessing today by the same conspirators.
In Jeremiah you will find an (inverted 9/11), something the devil likes to toy around with…
JEREMIAH
11:9 And The Lord said unto me A CONSPIRACY is found among the men of Judah and among the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

In Ezekial:
22:25. There is a CONSPIRACY of her prophets in the midst thereof, like a Roaring Lion Ravening The Prey.
They have devoured souls, they have taken the treasures and precious things
They have made her many widows in the midst thereof.
The conspiracy still exists today, and you can read all about it here:

Miles Mathis begins with a logical premise but he can’t understand the ancient “test of Common Sense.”
If he had he’d have figured out by now that all these “fakes” would of necessity would require hundreds if not thousands of people. Compartmentalization is not enough. Too many people would have to be in on assassinations, nukes, wars.
He made his most famous blunder by not researching a simple location: He notes that in seeing Ford’s Theater that Lincoln could not have been shot there. The configuration of the building is all wrong for Booth’s alleged movements.
Had he checked, he would have known that the “Ford’s Theater” in modern DC is a tourist attraction; the original was torn down and not replaced. The new one is only there to get money and is not authentic to the original in any way.
“Conspiracy theory” is a major litmus test phrase; if someone spouts that phrase out as a label or an insult or a limp retort to a valid observation, then you know you are dealing with an imbecile or ignoramus at best and, more significantly, an enemy of truth. When some clueless douchebag tries to label me as a conspiracy theorist I either inform them I am actually a Probability Realist or just embrace the term and proudly advise the idiot at least I am, unlike them, intellectually capable of making valid observations and theorizing.

I never thought I would defend ‘miles mathis’, however what you write about him is clearly untrue… and patent fabrication…
Well… at least 95% of it…
If indeed you aren’t part of some kind of smear campaign I suggest you re-read the papers you claim you have… there are far more useful ways in which you could critique Mathis (overly reliant on ridiculous genealogies, logical fallacy, non sequiturs etc).. without resorting to obvious fabrication..
@andyyay..
I noted that your comment has old Beelzebub himself referenced G.I Gurdjieff… I am curious if you have practiced or perhaps ‘practice’… his acolyte Ouspensky’s ‘Self Remembering’…
I myself have utilised this method with great success for many years… it does indeed seem a ‘Superior’ technique..
What say you?..
To “chesterton”,
Your accusation is ridiculous and can easily be disproven by simply going to Miles Mathis’s website and perusing his crackpot articles.
So, you’re saying that he never wrote a 35page single spaced article on JFK being alive and running the U.S. government from behind the scenes? It’s a relatively recent article. The same goes for his delusional take on 9/11 … that it was all fake, etc etc.
Mathis is mentally ill. I mean that in a compassionate way, not as an insult. There’s nothing to sneer at or ridicule when it comes to mental illness. It’s a medical ailment like diabetes or heart disease. My point is that we have to be careful in not automatically assuming that just because someone is an “alternative” researcher or news source, or a researcher of conspiracies, that that person had a valid point.
Unfortunately, the sizeable portion of conspiracy researchers are seriously disturbed from a psychological point of view, and Mathis is a classic and premiere example. There’s no need to make fabrications about Mathis: he is very vocal about his crackpot theories, and always doubles and triple downs when challenged on them.
lewis jones on January 14, 2022 at 11:18 pm : Sound advice.
Apparently the term conspiracy has only been around in English about six hundred years. Its root verb is spirare, to breathe. To inspire is to breathe in and live. To expire is to stop breathing and die. To respire is to breathe over and over. To conspire is to get hot and heavy with someone behind closed doors.
Since the CIA under Angleton their Mossad liaison did the assassination of JFK, of course they had to make people swallow the absurdity that conspiracies don’t exist and conspiracy theorists are crazy. The truth is all collective action is conspiracy and it is the number one evolutionary strategy according to E. O. Wilson’s theory of eusociality., the power of a cooperative ingroup, the hive mind.
E.O Wilson never talked even once about the sayanim system within his “best evolutionary strategy” discussion of hives and defensible nests. Kevin Mcdonald another evolutionary biologist, finally did.
@ Chesterton
The term “self-remembering” is from Gurdjieff but the exposition of the technique is Ouspensky’s. How closely the apprentice’s methods mirror the master’s, we don’t know. The philosophic precepts are certainly from Gurdjieff’s arcana, as are the purposes to which the practice strives. I have read “In Search of the Miraculous” but it was years ago.
Isn’t “self-remembering” just a methodology for training consciousness in greater acuity of the awareness, of the experience of percipience itself, in complement to the engagement of the active mind? If you become both the experiencer and he who is experienced, a kind of hemi-sync equalization is achieved, which, when sustained, expresses as as a sharpened state of awareness. If my understanding is poor, I will happily stand corrected. As I say, it’s been a while.
I practise what might be called “active remembering” which may have been suggested by Ouspensky but is really just mental athletics (and I don’t mean the paralympics) to maintain and improve retentive memory capacity.
Here’s an example – I’m 54 years old but I can remember the christian names and surnames of all of the other 29 children in my primary school class and could probably offer a potted “early years” biography of each. Have a go if you like. The older you are, the more difficult it’s likely to prove.
So, how come I can remember? Well, I couldn’t, when I first tried it. I could remember about two thirds and not all by their full names, even after straining. The missing names came to me after I gave time to remembering places; investigating my memories of the schematics of the classrooms, the assembly hall, the playground, playing field and toilets, the dinner-hall, the secretary’s office, the headmaster’s office, the corridors, the changing rooms, the school swimming-pool and the outside gates, from where our parents would deliver or pick us up. At each location, refreshed memories will present and once properly explored, place can trigger other sequences of memory which yield a vastness of clues to explore. This is akin to the well-known technique of the “memory palace” a fictional room, the furniture and arrangement of which, are co-ordinate graphics to cue memory.
You could even have a go yourselves – because olefactory and gustatory memory are less usually appropriated and are deeply imprinted – try boiling yourself up an arterially criss-crossed portion of lamb’s liver, with an accompanying onion gravy, erring to the watery side of water; plus some conspicuously unmashed, powder-clotted, mashed potatoes and some lank, cold cabbage from the day before; then, for pudding, engorge upon a bowl of hot semolina and prunes. Close your eyes (and pinch your nose, if that’s what you use to do) – then imagine you’re in your primary school dinner hall, with all of its lunch-time din and tuck in!
Whoosh! Things that you thought were long forgotten, return and myriad details accrue. These memories were not forgotten, of course – they were just not being actively remembered.
Should you wish to try this experiment at home, you do so, at the risk of throwing-up, all over the dinner-table and across the laps of those seated next to you, just like you did in year three of the Infants. Ah, the sweet fragrance of sawdust!
I use mnemonics, acronyms, counting systems (but not with playing cards,) algorithmic aids, word and image association of all kinds; sounds, smells and tastes (where appropriate,) intervals of reiteration and consolidation and continuous self-reflection, as my mental mapping techniques to retain or retrieve memory.
I don’t think that was so much of what you were enquiring after – but it may have some interest, to someone somewhere, who wishes to better their memory retention, in an undemanding and enjoyable way.
