I watched this last night and did indeed find it fascinating!! Growing up in the Welsh valley’s, I can relate to the spirit of defiance and community that Michael embodies. My own Grandfather, a steel worker, was once enveloped in red hot wire that had spun off the mill, traumatised with the burn’s that blistered like ‘Goose’ eggs, bandaged, he returned to work the next day. Since he was the ‘head roller’ he was the only man who knew how to work the mill and without him-no output; no money for the workers. Many injured and incapacitated industrial workers were tossed aside like used peasants and relied on their former co-workers, the parish council and the church to survive. The poor working conditions and miserable wages became the crucible where the spirit of the working class was forged. The religious revival of the late 19th century, principally through the Welsh Methodists and unionisation led to the formation of the Labour party and finally the workers had a voice. It was against this backdrop that Aneurin Bevan, ‘If you tolerate this, your children will be next’, drew up the plans for the N.H.S. It is unfortunate that modern socialism and ‘the left’ have inverted their original principle’s that were predicated on Christianity. The feudal overlords never went away and like the elderly miners whose testimony galvanised the young ‘Bernician’, the former miner’s leader Arthur Scargills’ warnings have sadly proved prescient.

I would like to correct a mention of the NHS
Hitler in Germany gave the people the first free health service he gave then health clubs and a free holiday at a purpose built resort and raised the level of wages for all the poorest
he gave them proper health service not what we have run by the drug companies
it was envy in the UK of what our fellow anglo saxons had achieved once they stopped the jews creaming off and got them out of running things
