China is telling families to stock up on food and other daily essentials as bad weather, energy shortages and Covid-19 restrictions threaten to disrupt supplies.
The country’s Ministry of Commerce late Monday issued a notice directing local governments to encourage people to stockpile “daily necessities,” including vegetables, oils and poultry, in order to “meet the needs of daily life and emergencies.”
The agency also urged local authorities to make sure that people have an “adequate supply” of essentials this winter into next spring. And it told those authorities to keep prices stable — a source of anxiety in recent weeks, as the cost of vegetables has surged throughout China because of unusually heavy rainfall that has hurt crops.
China has stressed the importance of shoring up food and other daily supplies in the past — including in September, ahead of a major weeklong holiday period. But those statements are usually very obviously intended for local authorities to read, and rarely capture the attention of everyday citizens. The inclusion of language in this statement that mentions families, though, appears to be putting people on edge.
The sudden warning sent shock waves through Chinese social media on Tuesday, as many people speculated about the commerce ministry’s rationale.
The government “didn’t even tell us to stock goods when the Covid outbreak erupted in early 2020,” wrote one Weibo user, responding to the news.
Another
speculated that authorities were reminding people that they “might not be able to afford vegetables this winter.”
So strong was the reaction that some within Chinese state media sought to quell concerns. Hu Xijin, the editor of the Global Times, a state-run tabloid, dismissed suggestions that the notice could be connected with rising tensions between Beijing and Taipei. China considers Taiwan an “inseparable part” of its territory, even though the Chinese Communist Party has never ruled the self-governing island.
The state-owned Economic Daily, meanwhile, wrote Tuesday that authorities were attempting to remind families to prepare in case of temporary lockdowns caused by Covid-19.
And state broadcaster CCTV said that the portion of the announcement calling on families to stock up on necessities had been “over-read.” It also released an interview with Zhu Xiaoliang, a Commerce Ministry official, who said that daily supplies for people are sufficient and can be “fully guaranteed.” Zhu added that the announcement was intended for local authorities.
China has maintained a stringent zero-Covid policy, even as countries around the world gradually open up and learn to live with the coronavirus. The world’s second largest economy is resolute on completely eradicating the virus within its borders, and has implemented tough restrictions to stop outbreaks, including stopping high-speed trains and quarantining passengers, and changing traffic lights to red to discourage traffic in one county where a single case was reported.
China’s strict measures even went viral over the weekend after a single confirmed case of coronavirus sent Shanghai Disneyland into a snap lockdown. Crowds in one video were shown lining up in front of makeshift testing sites as health workers in full personal protective equipment (PPE) looked on.
Nationwide efforts to curb coronavirus cases may be contributing in part to the rising cost of food, according to Wang Hongcun, an official with the Beijing Municipal Commerce Bureau. He said last week at a press conference that the cost of transiting across regions could rise because of strict containment measures.
Wang added that prices of some vegetables in the nation’s capital had soared 50% or more in October.
But there are other factors contributing to the rise. A widespread coal shortage has made greenhouse farming more expensive by pushing up the cost of heating and power. And extreme weather has damaged crops in major agricultural provinces.
The commerce ministry on Monday urged local authorities to prepare for the winter by signing long-term contracts with suppliers of agricultural products, as well as buying vegetables that are storable.
Beijing has taken other recent measures that appear to target food security. On Monday, the government unveiled an “action plan” encouraging people not to order food more than they need, and to report restaurants that waste food — a measure similar to a campaign spearheaded by President Xi Jinping last year, when the coronavirus pandemic and extreme flooding threatened food supply chains.
And in April, China passed a law that allows restaurants to charge diners an extra fee for leaving “excessive” leftovers on their plates. The law also penalizes people who make or share videos about binge eating, with fines up to 100,000 yuan (roughly $15,000).

Interesting.
At Least they are forewarning the public.
I wonder if.
boriStein,
Sleepy Joe,
Janice Trudeau,
ScoMo &
Jimmy Arden will give their respective populations any heads up warnings .
Will they flipping heckers like.
Even if they did, It would be to advise… plenty bog rolls, rubber Johnie’s & a good TV subscription portfolio.
& the little lambs will willingly comply.
I beg to differ with the editor. The alleged “virus” referred to as “covid19” didn’t break out in China or any place else. No health agency anywhere in the world has ever isolated or identified “covid19”. Therefore it is a myth.

The designed supply crisis and the ongoing blockade of China is continuing, & I suppose the Chinese regime expects this situation to only escalate. A few years ago, the German regime ‘told’ its sheeple to become ‘preppers’ for some future crisis. Europeans tend to live in bigger properties, even apartment size is regulated, unlike the UK’s rabbit hutch mentality. So it is very hard to build a substantial store of essentials for most in the UK, & on the other side of the UK space problem is the fact that UK sheeple are hoarders, lofts full of junk, garages full of crap, & you’ll find actual living space piled high with crap, in the typical home. I sometimes take an over-ground train in London. You would think a back garden would be treated as a treasured space, but this is far from the truth. Most gardens are in a dreadful state and every 4th garden has crap in it.
All of this is part on the UK mental illness picture. The UK regime would never advise that you prepare for some regime designed crisis. The UK regime would rather you go out and riot, or break into shops for your can of beans, not that you’ll have the gas or electricity to heat them up… I am partial to cold beans, but not Heinz beans, because they are disgusting. lol
Despite the known issues, it could be that the Chinese leaderships see some very big problems on the horizon & is trying build a more resilient society.
I reallise that space and money can be short, but just a few items per week can make a difference. Buy none perrishables, buy things that you aleady eat, buy things that go well together. Don’t forget fats and oils. Spices and herbs. Water is a big problem. You need about 1 gallon per person per day, that is a lot of water. Collapsible water containers to be filled when things look dodgy. Tablets for purification, or even un-sented bleach. The right dosing & bleach breaks down & is harmless if you use the right mix.
If you aren’t doing some form of prepping, you are a fool.
The next and it is a VERY important point. Don’t tell anyone your are a prepper. No one outside your immediate family, don’t tell any so called friends or neighbours. During a SHTF situation, lay low. If you converse with anyone outside your family, give them some bullxxxx that you are all hungry & plead food poverty. Oh yeh, don’t throw out big bags of rubbish, this is a give away. Pack your waste as neatly as possible and as small as you ‘can’, pun there.lol Don’t crush cardboard boxes, cut them into sheets, you might want to burn this at a later date. If you do have food waste that can’t be eaten, blend it if you have power & if you have tap water, flush it down the sink/toilet. If you are careful, it shouldn’t cause a blockage.
Remember, the standard NWO mantra is SCARCITY!
How convenient of CNN to say this is a conflict between China and Taiwan when in reality it’s a conflict brewing between the US and China, engineered by the US as it builds a coalition because it’s unable to do it alone. Twenty years ago the US destroyed the Middle East for gain and now it wants to do that to Asia.
yes the world is producing

And a robust slap to the face of every child under the age of 10 for not having mastered Bach’s Goldberg Variations and Cello Suites.
Don’t worry about it, they can always eat their cat, dog or kids if they run out of food.
Hre in the UK it is said neighbourhood watch people will be checking who is hoarding food and they will be reported and the food confiscated and thy will be taken to the camps
seemore butt: neighbourhood watch is a scam, no one gives a XXXt. I have NW signs where I live, they are just signs.
Small Garden !
Not much experience ?
Only a small balcony
etc etc.
Hanging baskets & window boxes will grow veggies just as easily as ‘Flowers’.
Dried Nettle leaves make superb (refreshing tea).
Dandelion, Literally all of it, roots(tea) leaves & flowers, all edible.
It will get that desperate.
Heed Carl’s advice above.
Tell no neighbour or what you assume to be a friend.
& just like East German parents, teach your kids the importance of keeping quiet….
Family secrets stay ‘Secret’.
Good advice from Carl Jones above. Prepare, prepare, prepare, and practice rigid operational security and keep your f***ing mouth shut to your neighbors about any of your stores or preparations unless you have an on-going cooperative agreement. When, not if, the shit hits the fan, keep a low profile and make sure to look like you’re just another poor wretch if you do have to poke your head out.
In a post on a another story here the other day, I explained how I strategically relocated a couple years ago to an area with more sustainable resources, a smaller population combined with a better brand of people, and less likely to descend into complete Mad Max meets Walking Dead chaos when the systems collapse. It’s still going to be violent and ugly, but I’m now in a much better position to adapt and overcome.
Make it a point — a major objective — EACH WEEK to get closer to at least one member of your family or a nearby neighbor! Keep track of successes and failures, learn what works with whom!! Become the binding force that brings people together, not a disruptive influence driving people even farther away from each other than the distance each already perceives! Discover ways to identify like-minded souls — keep in touch! This is prepping, too.
Alan Donelson: YOU must be joking? Me, trust thicko sheeple, we are long past the point where sheeple help each other. Everyone outside my family is a clear and present danger to me and my family. Anyone who votes, anyone who has the Covid jabs, & I don’t care if they now regret their actions, because I don’t care about them. You might as well call them death camp workers… don’t take me with you.

What a joke. Obviously you’ve never grown anything. When you grow food you get 2 crops a year, and they won’t keep very long. So, unless you’re some kind of creature that can eat 2 months of the year and fast for 10 you’re going to die.

When it hits the fan, the humans will be killing each other for food, and ‘pretending you don’t have any’ won’t do a thing. The gangs will enter every building and search everywhere, and most likely kill the inhabitants. That’s what your mighty species does everywhere when your pathetic ‘society’ breaks down, and it won’t be any different this time. Do you think people are going to carry on sitting freezing outside your great big house while you carry on being all ‘cosy’? The only reason your selfishness hasn’t already bought it about is because the police are there to prevent it. The moment they’re gone or hiding in their ‘stations’ you’re done for.
Dreamers one and all. Look at any war zone to see where you’re heading.
Good Words Mr Alan Donaldson.
There’s a good close group where I am, minuscule, It doesn’t matter, we are on the same page.
@ waw
A ‘Joke’ ?
You’re the joke.
I’ve been growing for the best part of 50+years.
Just a couple of little hints at what’s available & might make a difference in hard times which we all know are coming.
Many in the UK simply don’t have much of a garden,
I was trying to suggest a possible alternative option, that might not have been considered.
Nasty characters always expose themselves, They are nothing more than a JOKE 🙂
war: this is mostly true, but I live in London, admittedly it is a xxxx hole, but in a SHTF situation, I am relying on my enemies to impose curfews & shoot to kill.
So a mixture of policies in conjunction with standard sheeple behaviours, they will get shot by the state, they will starve while fighting each other. The police have trouble breaking my style of door down & I can make a home made flame thrower in minutes, aside from all the usual weapons.
I was having a convo with my BIL who has a pile in Oxfordshire, he didn’t rate my chances in London, so I said, ‘4×4 comes down your country lane with four blokes in it & they decide they want some FREE B&B, what are you going to do?’ If you ring the police, they won’t come. He didn’t like it. Sure, many police and military will go AWOL, I know for a FACT that the deep state already knows this, & they have plans. London will be locked down & anyone moving about will get shot. There’s no grey area here, its black and white, love the pun. My guess is that initially, the state will be brutal, to send a very clear message.
Bugging in is the best policy. Only bug-out when things get out of hand, and that is a personal decision.
@ CARL JONES
RIGHT ! there are classes . only the rich +
suburbian house + land owners will stick
together but not the lower class . tenants
are enemies of each other . then the diferent
races etc etc . it will be hellish !
farmers will stick together only with farmers .
@Glenn Ashton

LOL. I don’t believe you. Or if I do, then you’ve been growing tomatoes in your greenhouse.
Look at the examples you gave. LOFL.
You cannot grow enough food to survive. You cannot grow the variety of food that you’d need. And you cannot keep a constant supply coming. I’d like to see you survive on nettles and dandelion.
The only way to grow your own food and survive on it these days would be to live on the equator so that you could keep a constant stream of food growing, and even then you’d have to be able to protect it from all the other humans who will just take it from you whenever they feel like it. None of this is doable in the uk, not even by the rich.
I’m not trying to annihilate you – you’re just so far off the mark that it’s laughable. I’m guessing you’re some rich old man sitting in your great big house thinking you’re indestructable. Well, what’s coming will level all that, and you’ll be one of the first to go, right along with your window boxes filled with nettles and dandelions.
@ war.
I’m neither rich, (actually quite the opposite) & much the same with my habitation. there’s no big house,
& I’m certainly no where near indestructible.
But I have ‘vacated’ a metro area, For the very reason you yourself & others above have warned.
It won’t be pretty.
It’s unfortunate, that many, most ! Have no knowledge of things that are edible in the wild.
(Actually, when the poo does hit the fan, that might be Fortunate)
Ukrainians ate sawdust bread, Haitians grass & clay…
A lettuce from a hanging basket (if that’s the only option you have -say like a balcony in a block of flats)
would be far more palatable.
I would imagine..?
The context here is desperate survival. not on going months to years with nothing.
When the bastard Soviets suggested “They’ll know hunger when they have to eat their own children”.
miraculously, Some Ukrainians survived.
Desperate times, require desperate measures.
Just as an aside, & all joking apart.
Try some nettle tea. It’s absolutely delicious. & free.
