@MM, the US military like other countries with non-conscripted soldiers sign a contract, requiring obedience to lawful orders. The problem is that the definition of lawful order has been sidestepped by those who do not have respect for the already established laws on the books. This includes AU. Years ago, the military departments were a good way to straighten out a young man and help him grow up. It was not unusual for a sheriff, judge or constable to offer a young man either to join a military service or face jail time for his infraction of the law. Military discipline was strict but fair. Many were set straight and some even made it a career.
These days, I find it difficult to advise young men to consider US military service, because of the changes over time, government corruption filtering into the services, the various wars that did not serve the best interests of the American people nor the people of the countries where fought. Obama fired some 200 of the top brass, not for cause but for failure to comply with certain political views. It is not hard to conclude that the results of the latest fiasco in Afghanistan is due to a vacuum now in the leadership. Even Trump in his 4 years was unable to help the US military recover from this loss. It takes more than 4 years to raise top leadership.
