Fred Reed is in no doubt that most conspiracy theorists are mentally unhinged — fanatical cranks with more than a few screws loose. Published originally on the Unz Review as “I Say It Was Poltergeists: The Detowering Finally Explained” , Fred’s negative views on the mental capacity of the average conspiracy theorist has met with considerable hostility from the Conspiracy Theory Network.
This article, with quotes and pictures added,
has been slightly edited for brevity by LD.

In my decades as galley slave in Washington’s journalistic sludge fleets, I occasionally encountered conspiracy theories, such as the Second Shooter who got JFK , and that Roosevelt (FDR) intentionally let the Japs blow up Pearl Harbor, and of many sightings of alien space ships.
Various psychic oddities dwelling in the crevices of the Potomac Rome worried about fluoride in the water.
Like most news weasels who had a living to make, I ignored them as being fringe notions and wackos, which they later proved to be, the stories if not always the people. In any event they seemed few.
Then came Nine Eleven and Covid and there were millions of conspiracy theorists (CTs).
Their numbers elevated them from peculiarities to a sort of contained nation within the polity and, in the case of the vaccine worriers, a public danger in that they blocked efforts against the virus. Yet one cannot reasonably relegate a large fraction of the country to the realms of mental disturbance without explanation.
What was going on?
Perhaps it was another manifestation of the malaise and anxiety and creeping hopelessness that gnaw at so much of America.

Most of their theories were nuttier than Aunt Polly’s prize fruitcake, that Dad poured rum on every year at Christmas and lit on fire. For example, a photo of the Grassy Knoll from above showed it to be the last place in Dallas that anyone would put a sniper, being small, almost without concealment, surrounded on all sides by busy urban streets, and overlooked by tall buildings with lots of windows.
The inability of the Conspiracy Theorists (CTs) to notice radical incoherence and protuberant flaws like this in their conspiratorial ointment (or is it flies in ointment?) is characteristic of the species.
To my astonishment, I discovered that many among conservative friends believed in the FEMA camps and such, and that they became angry if these were questioned. So I stopped.
The contradictions in these tales were obvious as boils on a pole dancer, as were stark implausibilities and lack of knowledge of the underlying fields.
While the theories themselves soon ceased to be interesting, the psychology of the believers fascinated me.
There are a lot of theories and, I noticed men (almost all CTs are) who believe in one almost always believe in many.
Here are a list of the more popular conspiracy theories:
— FDR helped the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor.
— Black helicopters of some presumably nefarious sort fly over America.
— A hundred FEMA concentration camps, manned but as yet empty, exist to be stuffed with patriots or conservatives or somebody.
— The Navy shot down TWA 800.
— The Jews (or, in other popular versions, the CIA, Mafia, LBJ’s people, or Cuban intelligence) killed JFK. The second shooter did it.
— The government is buying up, or has bought up, thousands of coffins for I’m not sure exactly what purpose.
— The Jews killed Robert F. Kennedy (RFK).
— Obama wasn’t a US citizen.
— Covid doesn’t exist. While not existing, it contains microchips to track us. Also nanoparticles that do something probably not good. Also mRNA to reprogram our DNA.
— The Jews blew up the Twin Towers.
— The military blew up the Pentagon with a missile.
— The Jews killed Forrestal.
— Miracle cures for covid exist but are hidden by the government, or most world governments, to (a) make money for Big Pharma, (b) to train us to obedience as communist robots. The purpose of the virus is to depopulate the planet.
— Lots and lots of prisoners of war (POWs) and Missing in Action (MIAs) were knowingly left behind in Vietnam by the Pentagon.
— Space aliens are stored at Roswell and flying saucers are virtually everywhere.
— There is a huge conspiracy to pretend that large numbers of people are dying of Covid. Earlier there was a huge conspiracy to prove they weren’t.
— The Jews, nothing if not busy, are destroying white Christian civilization.
— Dominion voting machines were hacked.
— Fluoride in the water is softening our brains (but, presumably, hardening our teeth.)
— The 9/11 Towers were blown up by mini-nukes, the airplanes didn’t exist but were holograms, and pools of molten steel were found under the rubble months later.
— There is apparently among Conspiracy Theorists (CTs) a gentleman’s agreement that enthusiasts of one theory will not criticize a mutually exclusive theory. For example, when the Twin Towers fell, huge steel beams were allegedly hurled long distances, proving the use of explosives, but the buildings also supposedly fell neatly in their “footprints,” proving “controlled demolition.” At least one of these has to be wrong.
Why Conspiracy Theorists, often no dummies, do not notice these impossibilities puzzles me

The fair few among my friends are otherwise normal and, while mostly conservative, fall within the political mainstream, at leas as loosely defined.
Billions of words have been written by now about almost as many theories of Nine-Eleven but none answers the prior question of whether the conspiracy was possible.
This baffles me.
A tale: In Marine Corps basic—OK, AIT, Advanced Infantry Training at Lejeune—we had a (very, very) short course in demolitions. It consisted in crimping a blasting cap onto a length of fuse, inserting it in a block of c4, lighting the fuse, and running like hell to the other side of the berm (“Fire in the hole.”) We saw demonstrations of how to use det cord to connect multiple blocks of boom stuff, but didn’t actually do it. I’m pretty sure I could have dropped a small rural bridge in Vietnam, but not much else.
One thing the instructors stressed—we probably would have figured it out all by ourselves—was that to bring something down, you needed to cut the supports that held it up.
Applying this complex reasoning to the Twin Towers, a Marine would reason that here too the supporting elements needed to be cut. What were these? Answer: the fifty-nine huge steel uprights on each face of the building.
Where were these? Answer: In plain sight of all of the workers in the offices on the outer face of the building. Great big things, covered with wood facing or plaster, but visible. Visible every day. All day.
Would not a Conspiracy Theorist, if he wanted to be believed by anyone outside of the community of the faithful, at a minimum have to explain how the Mossad agents rigged these pillars for demolition without being noticed?
No! Conspiracy Theorists don’t think this way. If you’re a conspiracy theorist, all you have to do is believe. To know without finding out. To accept without checking.
The Conspiracy Theorists aren’t lying. They’re not trying to fool the public. If they were, they would try to inject a degree of plausibility into their stories.
Nor do they seem to want to convince a wider public, or, surely, they would answer the essential questions.
If you want me to believe that the Israelis did do 9/11, you have to show me that they could have done it. If they couldn’t have, they probably didn’t.
Weirdly, Conspiracy Theorists on the web become much angrier at ME for doubting their theories than they are angry at the at the Israelis who, they assert, allegedly killed three thousand Americans.
I do not recall hearing any demand for even a diplomatic protest, much less a carpet bombing Tel Aviv—which would have been the appropriate measure to take if Israel actually did it.
As of fifteen minutes ago, I have encountered a new kink in this rope: the explosives were built into the Towers at the time of construction. I suppose by a large gang of Mossad agents pretending to be construction workers The towers were finished in 1973, making them a monument to terroristic forethought.
The more you look at this stuff, the sillier it gets, but the Conspiracy Theorists just don’t notice.
If the aim is to blame Israel, I can cook up a better story in two minutes: diabolical Mossad agents, pretending to be Arabs, talked the hijackers into the idea of the hijackings and gave them funding. Bingo! This would be almost impossible to disprove (or prove). It could be applied just as easily to the CIA or to anyone else desired, and it would leave leave the “official story” functioning. But this would be boring.

Look, give me ONE story: about Covid or the Towers. Then stick to it! And show it clearly to be physically possible.
Failing this, I have to think we are dealing with no more than shapes swirling in the inner fog, instead of with reality.
Although I concede that traces of pixie dust were found in the 9/11 rubble, and witnesses report a dancing light, consistent with Tinker Belle…..

This is just laughable. People like this are obviously paid by the enemy. I don’t think he should take the word inconsistency in his mouth, because that’s just what official stories usually include.
Just to name a few of his points…
– JFK: there are video material of two shots, from different angles. How can this not be strange? There are many more strange things surrounding this event.
– 9/11: Don’t go there, just don’t. There is overwhelming evidence of a conspiracy. You must be totally fact resistant of really stupid to not see this.
– Covid scamdemic: same here, overwhelming evidence of mass de-population. TPTB have even written books and documents about this.
At the end it comes down to who’s awake and who isn’t.
Most thought at some stage that the activities of Jimmy Savile were just conspiracy theories.

Many years ago, an infrequent writer on this site tried to build a relationship with some very warped individuals who wrote a report for Demos, the think-tank. I have a full hard copy somewhere… This report advocated the Big Society infiltration of truther groups with the idea they could disaffect some truther members so much, that they would take matters into their own hands and start commiting acts of terror.
So to clarify. Demos is funded and supported by the elite/deep state, and they wanted to ‘groom’ law abiding sheeple, so they would become terrorists.
This is not a theory. Why this writer would want to have a diologue with these evil sheeple, I’ve no idea.
And while I imply that many commentors on here are truther, they’re not pure truther, because they hold some very deep seated prejudices, & that doesn’t sit well with me, and also, I don’t think all comments come from valid entities.

It’s the conclusions put out by governments which are the conspiracies, saying how things happened must have happened when they clearly didn’t happen that way. And it’s the people who believe the government line who therefore are the conspiracy theorists.
Those of us who don’t accept the official line are truth seekers whose own conclusions are arrived at after analysing the known or likely events, and so are often more realistic about what really unfolded, and they are no more conspiracy theories than the conclusions of forensic examiners before the proof comes in. The difference is the side looking for forensic proof is the same side trying to hide it in other events.

This diatribe by Fred Reed is an impoverishment of intelligence and a calculated provocation. There is no analysis here, just a series of loose bullet-points juxtaposed to bring apparent weight to a cluster of a priori and prejudicial assertions.
It is assumptive to reckon upon a homologous “conspiracy” bloc existing and that, if it does exist, that it acts in concert, in defiance of better evidencing; that its influence is fully pervasive, despite that better evidencing and that somehow, therefore, this all constitutes an endemic irrationality and even a collective psychiatric malaise within that purported bloc. These are all brazen and belligerent suppositions.
The author is, quite starkly, unavailed of the Socratic method and his barrage of unsupported predicates very likely signals a counter-intelligence sponsorship. If he were fair and just, he would have taken each of the issues he mentions and examined them one by one, offering his reasons as to why the conspiratorial contentions are unsustainable and invalid.
For example, he would have given due consideration to Christopher Bollyn’s twenty-year-long investigation into 9/11, (at the very least he would have read Bollyn’s “Solving 9/11”) and offered a critical breakdown of Bollyn’s errors to enlighten a misgiven readership. He would, in addition, have been able to easily counter the narrative of Victor Thorn’s “9/11: Made In Israel.”
He would have read and analytically parsed Michael Collins Piper’s “Final Judgement” to prove satisfactorily that there was no Jewish invovement in the J.F.K. assassination.
He would have closely studied the clinical literature with regard to the chemical action of Flouride and given scholarly attention to the many voices of warning among medical experts concerning Covid-19 “vaccines.”
He would, at least, have allowed for a degree of lassitude with regard to current speculations about the purpose of F.E.M.A. camps because nobody is making claim to actually know the particulars of their intended purpose as yet.
Fred Reed is either a man of limited capabilities or he’s bogus. I favour the latter; that he’s yet another C.I.A./ Sayanim provocateur; yet another disciple of the devil playing his card; yet another hater of the truth; yet another demon warring against God, warring against The One Of Only One.
The most ludicrous 9/11 theory of conspiracy out of all the conspiracy theories is the official one.

Of course those in power will classify their enemies as ‘mentally disturbed’, for its not truth that wins, but power. All that matters is if your group/cult controls the government, media, banks, schools, religions, corporations, police, military of a State. Once that has been accomplished, you can do & get away with anything, like imploding the Twin Towers, administer geoengineering, or fake the Moon landing. Then the truth/untruth is employed by & subservient to the interests/power of the Cult/State.
I get that we have to challenge the more absurd theories of events out there injected into the mix, the “red herrings” and outlandish misinformation intended to muddy the waters or make those with valid points look like kooks or retards by association. But Reed’s blanket assessment here now makes me wonder if he has shred of integrity. I used to enjoy many of Reed’s articles, but this one is raw sewage and it would certainly seem Reed has either, a) lost his marbles, or b) has become completely compromised, or c) both.

It’s an open mind that sees the truth of a thing, but people believe what they WANT to believe anyway. Like boils on a pole dancer. I can safely say ( from personal experience) that I have never seen one, but I definitely don’t know everything, so I’ll keep an open mind on that. Seems like a likely effect of pole dancing, but not yet ready to throw the baby out with the bathwater. I do know that fact is sometimes obscured by decepti-con crypto-aliens tho. Fact is, there are many more things that are really out there, than are dreamt of in ANY philosophy, Horatio.
At the time when White Elephant gave us some Flat Earth trash I had recently seen the mental problems of other FE adherents and then I could see his, and the other four things he was getting wrong, which meant I did not try to “rescue” him any more. FE is a special case and has certainly served one of its purposes–of making all sceptics look mad, because, unfortunately, the FE people get a lot right.
Would I be a “Conspiracy Theorist” if I point out that it is absurd to believe that a dead bit of genetic material (a.k.a a virus) exists in order to invade living cells in order to make more copies of its dead self and, in doing so, it damages the living cells and makes their owners sick. Really, people, really!

I wrote some decent comments on Darkmoon, but I am not going to copy and paste them here, go there and read my argument that corrupt people lacking personal integrity go along with the attack on conspiracy theorists because it is the path of least resistance and they do not have to challenge their own internal beliefs. That I say could be a fatal error with the death jab.
I also make the argument that religion teaches obedience to authority, I cite Romans 13 as proof, I say that to not trust the government is tacit admission they holy book isn’t true … and if one part is not true well then how can you trust the salvation narrative. Thus fundamentalist Christians take the hardcore stance that every word in the Holy Bible is the inerrant word of God, and thus refuse to budge and inch and support the state (and Israel) no matter how evil they get.

Actually I think it is on topic, the point I am making is very important, I am pointing out that you can no longer trust the government or the medical establishment, and thus the very basis for our civilization is being undermined.
I am also stating that this plandemic is proof the government is evil and thus the holy book is wrong. And if Romans 13 is wrong then what else is wrong? How can you trust the salvation narrative if Romans 13 is wrong?

If planes hit the Pentagon in 9-11 then why are there no pieces of evidence proving this? If covid exists then why no empirical evidence from Wuhan or the CDC? If no American troops were left behind in Vietnam (just as “valid” as no Americans left behind in Afghanistan!) then how come I have met eye-witnesses who claim thre WERE troops left behind in Vietnam (Bo Gritz and others, including a friend who passed years ago who they tried to force to take part in drug-running “Air America”…he refused and later joined the DEA where he witnessed drug running from Central America). NEVER allow yourself to be pigeon-holed by stooges like Reed as a ‘Conspiracy Theorist’. A term, after all, introduced into the lexicon by the CIA in the wake of Warren Commission Report into the JFK murder, to discredit doubters.
Just once, Reed posits a serious question “…one cannot reasonably relegate a large fraction of the country to the realms of mental disturbance without explanation.”
His answer? … “Perhaps it was another manifestation of the malaise and anxiety and creeping hopelessness that gnaw at so much of America.”
Really? That’s it? Is that the argument? What about the rest of it, Mr Reed? Malaise? Anxiety? Creeping hopelessness? What could possibly explain that?
Instead Reed moves right along. Doesn’t even attempt to mount an argument. He just sets up his straw man and proceeds to pummel it with florid vituperations.
Take it as a sign that Reed’s paymasters are getting nervous.

6. The king has a military commander on one arm and the priest on the other. All three work together to keep the kingdom the way it is, a pyramid of power, where ordinary people on the bottom are dumbed down slaves and those at the top are well educated and learned and thus can fool the masses with holy bullshit

I do not mind taking the term Conspiracy Theorist; we investigate the invisible conspiracies, and the first step is to posit a theory. Then you test it, and reject it if it fails, and come up with another, and test that, and so on. Over years you build a picture of politics.
