Martin Pengelly – The Guardian Aug 22, 2021

At his rally in Alabama on Saturday night, Donald Trump heard the unusual sound of booing and jeering aimed his way, after he told supporters: “I recommend taking the vaccines.”

The former president was speaking in Cullman, Alabama, a city struggling to cope with Covid-19 cases and hospitalisations.

Like other states home to resistance to vaccinations and other public health measures often stoked by Republican leaders, Alabama is at the mercy of the Delta variant of the coronavirus.

If nothing else the Covid crisis is helping to sort the wheat from the chaff. Trump’s urging his supporters to get vaccinated illustrates this perfectly.

Masquerading in the guise of a “conservative patriot”, Trump is merely a political opportunist who knows he can appeal to ordinary American patriots who feel utterly betrayed by Washington.

Essentially he’s a businessman with an eye for the main chance. So he talks about “freedom” because he knows that it will resonate with many Americans who feel disenfranchised by the Beltway’s power brokers.

Yet even as he appeals to politically disenchanted patriots, he calls upon them to get vaccinated with a vaccine that hasn’t been properly tested, for an ailment that is little worse than seasonal flu for most otherwise healthy under 60year-olds.

In other words, he’s a fraudster who’s ready to do the bidding of the REAL power brokers.

If Trump were authentic he would question why so many are dying after vaccination, but he’s not. Instead he’s urging his supporters to get vaccinated, which means he’s no better than any of the other political charlatans in Washington. Ed.
