This is a mocking laugh! And “I’m fucking with you” laugh, a “I got the better of you” laugh, a “You didn’t see that coming, did ya?” laugh, a “You dumb ass!” laugh, a “I love to see you being had and suffering” laugh! So the delites are mocking from all corners of the earth, fulfilling “what [they] want”, in obedience to Satan, “without a hitch”!

They mocked the resurrection (Acts 17)

David Shayler is a lesser-effective agitator who thrives on scandalous notoriety. The former M.I.5 employee, suffers from a recklessly ill-measured sense of his own self-importance, which misapprehension has edged him perilously close to delusionary megalomania on occasion.
I knew him once. We were in the same year and matriculated to the same faculty at university together and indeed, studied the same classes at times. We were not friends, nor actively enemies but there was a certain frisson of contempt between us, bourne in part by the apparent irreconcilability of our class backgrounds. I was brought up in slum housing, by hard-working but barely solvent and minimally schooled parents but came to benefit greatly from a sterling grammar school education, which I’m still grateful for to this day. Mr. Shayler was of the more traditional, higher-education, student demographic of generational graduates, suburban prosperity and private schooling. All such juvenile antagonisms seem pawltry and skewed now.
Yet, in his capacity as the deputy-editor of the weekly university digest, Shayler once responded to the (admittedly) vigorous heckling, wantonly induged by my friend and I, of a candidate for president of the union during a bar-room hustings, by scurrilously describing the two of us in a subsequent report he penned, as the “sixties throwback and his junkie mate.”
My friend and I argued bitterly over the attributions because Shayler hadn’t made it clear which one of us was which and neither of us favoured becoming known as a “sixties throwback” – an epithet which, in our estimation, could easily sully reputations forever.
In those days, the university periodical had a circulation of about four and a half thousand readers but pursuing litigation on the grounds of libellous defamation never once even crossed our minds. We thought that Shayler was a prick; a privileged and pompous, “superior stock” public schoolboy and we laughed scornfully in the face of his unwarranted and seedy pejoratives.
Although this next anecdote is a mere aside and carries no especial significance, I do enjoy recounting it now and again.
I remember arriving late one evening at a house party, where all the usual undergraduate shenanigans were abounding. There were barely ambulatory youth, plentiful beer spillages, intensely red-faced snoggers salivating hydrophobically in corners; furtive and paranoic pot-smoking and all of the familiar spiel of empty braggadocio enjoined by chattering adolescents, dizzy with academia and truant with wine.
I wandered through a few downstairs rooms, looking for friends who might already be there.
When, pursuing this cause, I entered upon the living-room, there seemed to be a great deal of hilarity among those student-types who habitually huddle on couches at parties, like nestling snakes. The butt of their mockery was the activity of a rather rotund fellow, who in his drunken stupor, had passed out and was lying face downward on the floor while he robustly and rhythmically thrust his loins at the rolled-up and coldly unresponsive rug rolled up beneath him.
Yes, it was him – the horny spymaster himself, David Shayler, the carpetshagger supreme, who dreamt a hot dream there, oblivious to the spectacle and groaning contentedly – imagining, no doubt, an amorous tryst with his comely paramour, Mata Hari.
I trust that sharing these true recollections will not impede the bonhomie betokened of collegiate fraternity; that is to say, if David and I were ever to meet at some future reunion of the class of ’89/ ’90, former suspicions are put aside that we might greet each other with appropriate regard.
