Russia said on Monday it had successfully tested a Tsirkon (Zircon) hypersonic cruise missile, a weapon President Vladimir Putin has touted as part of a new generation of missile systems without equal in the world.
The defence ministry said in a statement that the missile had been fired from the Admiral Gorshkov, a warship located in the White Sea.
It travelled at around seven times the speed of sound before hitting a ground target on the coastline of the Barents Sea more than 220 miles away, it claimed.
Russia plans to fit the Tsirkon missile system to its submarines and surface ships.
Putin announced an array of new hypersonic weapons in 2018 in one of his most bellicose speeches in years, saying they could hit almost any point in the world and evade a U.S.-built missile shield.
he following year, he threatened to deploy hypersonic missiles on ships and submarines that could lurk outside U.S. territorial waters if the United States moved to deploy intermediate-range nuclear weapons in Europe.
Washington has not deployed such missiles in Europe, but Moscow is worried it might amid rising tensions between the two global superpowers.
Putin has said the Zircon missile would be capable of flying at nine times the speed of sound and have a range of 1,000 kilometres (620 miles).

Another Daily Mail/establishment scare story intended to frighten the public in the buildup to war.
It’s 1939 again. The British were desperate for war because they knew that by 1943 German rearmament would be complete and they would be unstoppable.
That a desperate US and it’s British puppet may try for a first strike is looking increasingly likely.
If the Russians say they will fit it to subs, etc that means it’s already been done.
They talk after the fact.
usa has 1500 nuclear missiles. china has 500. russia has less, but can’t remember how many. even poxy arsed britain has 150. what does it matter how far they can go? the whole of europe is stuffed with usa missiles. the whole of the other side are stuffed with ones pointing back.
heaven forbid someone should suggest getting rid of all the missiles. no, wait china did didn’t they. and, oh, russia. but nevermind…
drop it on the 1sq mile Vlad destroy their counting houses, the only
thing that means anything to them
The US declassified the transcript of a phone call between JFK and Nikita Kruschev during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. Kennedy asked Kruschev how many nuclear warheads Russia had, and Kruschev told him Russia had enough nukes to destroy all of America’s major cities. Kennedy told Kruschev, “We have enough nukes to destroy all your major cities twenty times over.” Kruschev replied, “We only need to destroy your cities once.”
America’s defence industry is a money-sucking boondoggle while Russia’s is a defence industry.
regarding the comment about destroying each others cities:
it don’t matter who drops what where. when X number of missiles drop the earth’s eco system will die, then every living thing will die. that’s why they haven’t dropped any thus far. they know that.
the only question that remains is what is X? no doubt some prat in a ‘university’ with a spreadsheet will tell you it’s value is something or other, but he’s just spouting. nobody knows. but you do know that the 3000 odd that are currently in existence are enough to destroy all life on earth many times over.
and who’s got their fingers on the buttons? quazimodo in drowning streeet? i doubt it. miden in the blight house? we’re told not (he merely has to nod yes when told to). putin? who knows. whatsisname in china? maybe.
whoever it is, you really don’t want them to have that power – unless you’re mad.
