We do need a proper discussion of freedom and power. What we have in our politics is fatuous, vacuous, shallow, not thought-out. Neither word has been in my vocabulary; that is the first problem. I will only have used them lazily when I did. Children love to exert a power, but it is a small one; adults find bigger ones. The answer may be that you need to remember that both these desires are on a spectrum in terms of how much you will get, so they have not much meaning on their own. You can get more if you work as a team but then you also have to share it, and the rest of the investigation is obvious. A few centuries ago, “enlightened self-interest” came into our debates with some proofs of how even the selfish man should co-operate with others and so benefit, but that is all well-known. Most people wrongly think all of society is one big arena of co-operation. We just use our discernment always.
