I wrote this piece on May 10, 2011. It was a look back at 1975 media coverage of global weather:
Inventing media reality
Here comes global cooling — May 10, 2011
I offer this piece, not to dig into the science, but to show how strong the media effect is. Thirty-five years ago, newspapers and magazines were drumming up support for a global cooling scare.
Notice the language in this April 28, 1975, Newsweek article, “The Cooling World,” by Peter Gwynne. It has the same rhythms today’s warming pieces display, the same transitions, the same reliance, of course, on experts.
It’s all about INVENTING REALITY, because the 1975 Newsweek reporter—or today’s highly confident journalists and smirking pundits—have no idea what they’re talking about. They’re simply taking their cues from people they accept as experts. And then fabricating the whole business. Cooling, warming—none of them [journalists] has ever really thought about the state of the science. None of them has even turned a layman’s mind, armed with some degree of logic, to the statements and methods of the climate researchers. They’re personally clueless.
Their editorial meetings should really go this way: “Okay, boys, we’ve got the quotes from the expert researchers, so now we know which way to go. It’s cooling (or warming). From here on out, make it up. Make it sound somber, inject apprehension and fear, you know how it works. We want that dignified tone in our pieces. Of course, we have no idea what the hell we’re doing. Not really. We’re just the messengers. But who cares? Give it your best shot. Invent reality.”
Newsweek, April 28, 1975. The ironies in this piece, knowing what we know now about the warming media campaign, are so thick you’ll need a de-fogger. And if you think the subsequent media shift from cooling to warming was simply a matter of discovering new iron-clad data, I have a villa in the center of the Arctic I’m dying to sell you. Here is the 1975 Newsweek article:
“There are ominous signs that the Earth’s weather patterns have begun to change dramatically and that these changes may portend a drastic decline in food production – with serious political implications for just about every nation on Earth. The drop in food output could begin quite soon, perhaps only 10 years from now. The regions destined to feel its impact are the great wheat-producing lands of Canada and the U.S.S.R. in the North, along with a number of marginally self-sufficient tropical areas – parts of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indochina and Indonesia – where the growing season is dependent upon the rains brought by the monsoon.”
“The evidence in support of these predictions has now begun to accumulate so massively [!] that meteorologists are hard-pressed to keep up with it. In England, farmers have seen their growing season decline by about two weeks since 1950, with a resultant overall loss in grain production estimated at up to 100,000 tons annually. During the same time, the average temperature around the equator has risen by a fraction of a degree – a fraction that in some areas can mean drought and desolation. Last April, in the most devastating outbreak of tornadoes ever recorded, 148 twisters killed more than 300 people and caused half a billion dollars’ worth of damage in 13 U.S. states.”
“To scientists, these seemingly disparate incidents represent the advance signs of fundamental changes in the world’s weather. The central fact is that after three quarters of a century of extraordinarily mild conditions, the earth’s climate seems to be cooling down. Meteorologists disagree about the cause and extent of the cooling trend, as well as over its specific impact on local weather conditions. But they are almost unanimous in the view that the trend will reduce agricultural productivity for the rest of the century. If the climatic change is as profound as some of the pessimists fear, the resulting famines could be catastrophic. ‘A major climatic change would force economic and social adjustments on a worldwide scale,’ warns a recent report by the National Academy of Sciences, ‘because the global patterns of food production and population that have evolved are implicitly dependent on the climate of the present century’.”
“A survey completed last year by Dr. Murray Mitchell of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reveals a drop of half a degree in average ground temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere between 1945 and 1968. According to George Kukla of Columbia University, satellite photos indicated a sudden, large increase in Northern Hemisphere snow cover in the winter of 1971-72. And a study released last month by two NOAA scientists notes that the amount of sunshine reaching the ground in the continental U.S. diminished by 1.3% between 1964 and 1972.”
“To the layman, the relatively small changes in temperature and sunshine can be highly misleading. Reid Bryson of the University of Wisconsin points out that the Earth’s average temperature during the great Ice Ages was only about seven degrees lower than during its warmest eras – and that the present decline has taken the planet about a sixth of the way toward the Ice Age average. Others regard the cooling as a reversion to the ‘little ice age’ conditions that brought bitter winters to much of Europe and northern America between 1600 and 1900 – years when the Thames used to freeze so solidly that Londoners roasted oxen on the ice and when iceboats sailed the Hudson River almost as far south as New York City.”
“Just what causes the onset of major and minor ice ages remains a mystery. ‘Our knowledge of the mechanisms of climatic change is at least as fragmentary as our data,’ concedes the National Academy of Sciences report. ‘Not only are the basic scientific questions largely unanswered, but in many cases we do not yet know enough to pose the key questions’.”
“Meteorologists think that they can forecast the short-term results of the return to the norm of the last century. They begin by noting the slight drop in overall temperature that produces large numbers of pressure centers in the upper atmosphere. These break up the smooth flow of westerly winds over temperate areas. The stagnant air produced in this way causes an increase in extremes of local weather such as droughts, floods, extended dry spells, long freezes, delayed monsoons and even local temperature increases – all of which have a direct impact on food supplies.”
“’The world’s food-producing system,’ warns Dr. James D. McQuigg of NOAA’s Center for Climatic and Environmental Assessment, ‘is much more sensitive to the weather variable than it was even five years ago.’ Furthermore, the growth of world population and creation of new national boundaries make it impossible for starving peoples to migrate from their devastated fields, as they did during past famines.”
“Climatologists are pessimistic that political leaders will take any positive action to compensate for the climatic change, or even to allay its effects. They concede that some of the more spectacular solutions proposed, such as melting the Arctic ice cap by covering it with black soot or diverting arctic rivers, might create problems far greater than those they solve. But the scientists see few signs that government leaders anywhere are even prepared to take the simple measures of stockpiling food or of introducing the variables of climatic uncertainty into economic projections of future food supplies. The longer the planners delay, the more difficult will they find it to cope with climatic change once the results become grim reality.”
That’s Newsweek in 1975. Sounds like science, must BE science, right? What else do you want? You’ve got experts weighing in, plus standard journalistic sentences, plus familiar rhythm and flow. It all adds up to…credibility. And possibly, a few of you who’ve been living in Florida for the past 60 years have parkas, snow shoes, snow plows, and audiocassettes on igloo- building in a shed. You bought these items in 1975. Because reality was what media said it was. Just like now.
So buy extra sunscreen and line up for your COVID shot in the arm, with full confidence.

Climate changes are normal and we are not getting warmer, I am sick to death of telling the brain dead if were getting warmer why have I still got my gas fire on in march April may and June, and since it didn’t snow when I was growing up explain the minus temperatures year on year since 95. IMO its weather modification either by ALIENs yes they are real, or its HAARP and chemtrails, (which most people think don’t exsist) BC they can’t be bothered to look upski in the skyski, take a good look at the wild fires of California etc, trees untouched yet the metals plastic etc melted or burnt, the high energy concentrate in wide beam patterns, earth is not spinning and no one apart from the hand full of elites have ever seen a Real picture of earth or space, all space images are CGI and NASA admits this, and if you think I’m talking rubbiah Explain to me how weather patterns go in every direction on a spinning ball, all weather should follow the force backwards away from the forward motion, yeah right spinning ball, even though GOD makes it plain earths under a firmiment,, yes weather modification is the top answer followed by normal weather pattern due to the sun n moon inter. Action,, IMO,,
Truth is truth but the Earth is not flat. He or she was sounding good for a minute.
Compared to when there were palms growing and alligators living above the Arctic circle, earth is getting cooler. When the Grande Coupure happened opening the seas around Antarctica, things got much cooler. But since the last glaciation, things got warmer without any help from SUVs and coal powered electricity generation. Glaciers melted, and even though their weight on land was alleviating allowing land to rise, sea level rose three hundred feet rapidly. These events happened because climates change without need for modern manmade industrial footprints. CO2 concentrations do not drive climate change; CO2 concentration is a lagging indicator of climate change, and that truth has long been known from the first glacial cores pulled.
Al Gore had to warn his acolytes not to discuss ‘the science’ but to heuristically claim it was ‘settled’; that way nobody would understand the fraud being frontrun by leftist politicians who lie for a living. AGW cannot explain the melting of the glaciers because there was no industry at the time it occurred. Thus the real climate change deniers are those who promulgate AGW, like Gates and the WEF, Gore and most of academia.
Right here at TS recently there was an excellent talk by William Happer about the actual effect of greenhouse gases, which is shown by the Schwarzchild curve of terrestrial infrared radiation. CO2 concentrations have virtually no effect on infrared (earthly temperatures radiating outward into the stratosphere) unless they are at or close to zero; you could increase concentratons of today by ten times and it would have no significant effect on the infrared curve. Greenhouse gases while somewhat modifying the Planck curve, are not even earth’s primary heat sinks of solar energy. The primary sinks are the equatorial ocean currents which circulate around the world in gyres that primarily create climates, in connection with latitudinal convection cells, rotation of the planet, orbit, axial inclination, vulcanism, and solar output.
The main reason this baldfaced lie- AGW / CO2 level- science fallacy is being promoted is the generalized war on humanity requires enough disruptions and inefficiencies that billions die due to engineered culls making use of falseflag attacks on all functioning systems of production, in the name of reducing CO2 emissions. The people demanding messianity now cannot wait for organic Peak Oil and running out of FFs by normal consumption, even though that would not be much of a wait in geohistory. We might almost call the dotplot an “Engineered Peak Oil”where eliminating FFs by force off falsified science achieves a Guidestone level result rapidly with the head rush of a power trip indulged in by people whose mentalities and addictions are not much different from methheads, drunks, and OCD patients.
If you could heal their mental illness you would achieve something never before accomplished in any era. It would be the first time cultural determinism of the naked ape societies took a backseat to sovereign reason. Sovereignty is primarily in individual reason; it only appears in groups that have that.

Idiot #1 ..According to Dr David Viner, a senior research scientist at the climatic research unit of the University of East Anglia, within a few years winter snowfall will become “a very rare and exciting event”. “Children just aren’t going to know what snow is,” winter snowfall will become “a very rare and exciting event”… he said
No mention of on going geo engineering disrupting the normal weather cycles.

I’ll believe in global warming when coconut trees grow in Minneapolis.
A trace gas (CO2) does not control or even affect the thermodynamics of a planet.
Because the sun is now in remission, solar minima, we are likely due for another little ice age.
CO2 has nothing to do with it.
Why not move to Minot North Dakota now and beat the rush to upcoming real estate boom?
Ain’t it funny how they find all those T-Rex skeletons in South Dakota, but if you had a T-Rex alive today, and let it go on almost any day of the year, it would freeze to death in 24 hours.
Another thing to consider, it took the earth 50 million years to cool from the Triassic period of large reptiles, do you really think a slight increase in a trace gas is going to change that?
Global Warming is a giant mind f–k. It is a total scam.
