The poet is trying to have a balanced view of a story he thinks has some injustice about it. In reality we cannot be sure about the story itself.
And yet didn’t Jesus break bread with his betrayer and wash his feet. Betrayed by a kiss. The mighty Lion of Judah is a Lamb. Matthew 5:5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

In a more brutal mood I would have sais that Jews often try to find or create sympathy for Judas. Commies in Russia created a museum for him, or some sort of institution.
