Production of the RAF’s new unmanned high-speed combat drone is set to begin in Northern Ireland in a £30million project.
Nicknamed the ‘loyal wingman’, the aircraft will be designed to fly alongside fighter jets, armed with surveillance and electronic warfare technology to provide a battle-winning advantage over hostile forces.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said the three-year contract to design and manufacture a prototype will support more than 100 jobs in Northern Ireland.
The loyal wingman will be the UK’s first uncrewed platform able to target and shoot down enemy aircraft and survive against surface-to-air missiles, the MoD said.
Spirit AeroSystems, in Belfast, has been selected to lead Team Mosquito in the next phase of the project.
The team will further develop the RAF’s Lightweight Affordable Novel Combat Aircraft (LANCA) concept, with a full-scale vehicle flight-test programme expected by the end of 2023.
Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis said: ‘This is fantastic news and underlines the distinct strengths in Northern Ireland’s economy, through its advanced engineering and manufacturing capabilities.
‘This ground-breaking project will involve significant investment which will not only support local employment, but also reinforce Northern Ireland’s contribution to the security of our nation.’
‘This is a great win for the Northern Ireland defence industry and will showcase some of the most pioneering engineering work currently being undertaken in the UK,’ UK Minister for Defence Procurement Jeremy Quin said.

The director of Future Combat Air at the MoD, Richard Berthon, said: ‘Project Mosquito is a vital element of our approach to Future Combat Air, rapidly bringing to life design, build and test skills for next generation combat air capabilities.
‘Autonomous ‘loyal wingman’ aircraft create the opportunity to expand, diversify and rapidly upgrade Combat Air Forces in a cost-effective way, now and in the future.’
Boeing first unveiled the new autonomous fighter jet plane at an Australian air show in February 2019.
The aerospace giant said the new drone was particularly suited for long-distance surveillance missions that humans can’t typically perform.
It may also be able to carry missiles or bombs at some point in the future.
Another deep state corporate lush. Will this teaser investment keep Northern Ireland in the union, doubtful. The Westminster regime uses the same tactics in Scotland.
Let’s get real. Current military fighter of 4th & 5th generation has no match outside the EU, Russia, China, India (maybe) & the US. Some countries are not listed because they have no say. The US and UK have moved a very long way from the idea that they’re prized, over-complicated & in some cases, deeply flawed planes will engage in close combat or in dog fights with the enemy. Take the joker F35 which isn’t combat-ready. This very expensive plane cannot dog fight & this is the UK regime’s choice for its redundant aircraft carriers which they are about to send to the South China Sea… lol Yes, it really is that funny.
I find it rather alarming that the sheeple in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland has put up with Westminster rule for so long. A return to the ‘troubles’? That is a difficult call. I’d say it was on a knife-edge. The UK deep state ran the Northern Ireland troubles & it is very hard to work out who in the IRA (& others) didn’t work for the UK deep state. Think Iraqi warlords being paid to murder coalition troops in Iraq.

@activisor Actually the UK is far from bankrupt, infact they own the banks (via proxy at least for the Jewish families involved) of a vast majority of the world via the City of London!
Not to mention they can just print money with impunity as almost every other nation will buy the bonds to indebt their nations further lol. Ensuring a steady supply of raw materials in exchange for paying off such debts.
Also the petro chemical industry (outside of China, Russia and a few state actors like Iran, North Korea) exclusively deal in Dollar and Pound only! Why do you think the UK did not join the Euro currency, for this precise reason and to keep a hold of the joint monopoly on the petro Chemical industry!
Now back to the F35, it is a flawed design and poorly built aircraft, however, even Russia understands that the future is going to be all about hitting each other from miles away and retreating when the enemy gets too close (or as they will advertise it, repositioning for the strategic upper hand! But in real terms known as, running like a dog with your tail between your legs, but then barking again from a safe distance…) Hence why Russia has jumped the queue with hypersonic missiles and their own drone craft, even the su57 was a test bed for future tech related to long range engagement, which is why it is the only stealth jet Russia has dabbled with (they knew their speed and dog fighting ability would be more than enough to counter even the F22 so they never invested heavily in stealth like the West has tried, I say try as the Russian s400 which is 90’s tech can detect them even to date)
Something like these drones will only increase their barking power, increasing their odds of a wireless bite (as we used to joke in school with non touching fist bumps across the classroom, Bluetooth connection)
But we have been conditioned to see these as normal via media once again, the Japanese will just say “Oh look, Fangs” In reference to the popular anime series Gundam, which have had such technology drones, that happen to be semi user controlled, mostly autonomous in nature, carrying extra fire power to assist the pilot and also can be sacrificed to protect the pilot and his mecha from sure kill shots.
How long before AI catches up to (if not already there in secret) these fictional technologies…
