Britain’s coronavirus cases remained flat at 24,141 today despite Boris Johnson justifying lockdown by claiming the NHS is under threat from soaring hospitalisations.
Another 378 deaths were announced on Thursday, an increase of 35 percent on this time last week, while the number of new infections represented an increase of just 4.7 percent on last Thursday’s infections.
The figures were released after a Downing Street press conference during which the Prime Minister and NHS boss Sir Simon Stevens pointed to a graph of rising Covid-19 inpatients to justify England’s second lockdown.
It flew in the face of evidence from top health experts that the NHS is still no busier than it normally is during the winter.
The chart showed how there are more than 11,000 people with Covid-19 being treated in hospitals in England now compared to just 500 at the start of September. But it didn’t show how those patients represent fewer than 10 per cent of the health service’s overall capacity and that new infections now appear to have flat-lined.
Top experts fumed to MailOnline today that No10 has only hit the lockdown panic button because it was backed into a corner by its ‘gloomster’ scientific advisers, who don’t want to deal with the same scrutiny that was hurled their way during the first wave.
In an attempt to illustrate how hospitals would continue to fill up in the coming weeks, Sir Simon explained there is a seven to 10 day lag between getting infected and needing to go to hospital and a lag of 15 to 30 days before a patient is either discharged or dies.
But the Government’s own statistics show coronavirus cases have plateaued thanks to the localised three-tiered approach introduced in mid-October. It suggests that hospital admissions would not continue to spiral as quickly as Downing St or its advisers claim.
In a thinly-veiled swipe at Sir Patrick Vallance and Chris Whitty, Sir Simon said he chose to bring just one Covid-19 graph with him to convey his point about hospitals. No10’s top scientists have been accused of scaremongering and confusing the public with their barrage of doomsday charts based on projections, assumptions and forecasts — but rarely actual concrete, real-time data.
Speaking into the camera, Sir Simon said: ‘Like you – I’m sure the Prime Minister won’t mind me saying so – I have watched these press briefings and sometimes the charts can be a bit hard to keep up with, so I have just got one chart today that indisputably sets out what we in the health service are seeing.
‘What it shows is the number of patients that are being looked after in hospitals across England. At the beginning of September that was under 500 patients. By the beginning of October that had become 2,000 coronavirus in- patients, and, now, at the beginning of November that is over 11,000. That’s the equivalent of 22 of our hospitals across England full of coronavirus patients – those are facts, those are not projections, forecasts, speculations, those are the patients in the hospital today.’

Hours before the press conference, Health Secretary Matt Hancock warned the health service could collapse and seriously ill non-Covid patients could be turned away unless Covid-19’s resurgence is nipped in the bud.
But eminent doctors and scientists told MailOnline ministers had got their priorities twisted by sacrificing people’s physical and mental wellbeing to save the NHS — which was designed to protect the people.
They claimed wards are no busier than they normally are at this time of year and that a large chunk of the people being treated for Covid-19 were either already in hospital when they caught the virus or would’ve been admitted for other reasons.
Oxford University’s Professor Carl Heneghan, an expert in evidence-based medicine and practicing GP, said his analysis suggested a fifth of infected patients in the NHS acquired the virus in hospital, meaning they were already taking up a bed before contracting the disease.
NHS England has about 140,000 beds at its disposal – including capacity at the seven Nightingales built during the first wave and thousands of beds commandeered from the private sector – and currently there are just 11,000 Covid-19 patients in its hospitals. It means people with the disease are occupying fewer than 10 per cent of the health service’s overall capacity.
Leaked documents suggest the NHS on a national scale is actually treating fewer patients than it was last year. Just 84 per cent of all hospital beds were occupied across the country on Tuesday, according to the document, which is lower than the 92 per cent recorded over the autumn of 2019.
How many of those ‘covid patients’ are there because of, or just with covid? A tiny fraction I’d wager.
Also, outrageously, since 08 Oct 20 they’ve been catagorising flu and covid together so that will add to the numbers.
The measures introduced to combat a virus no worse than flu., have clearly demonstrated that the political system in Britain is totally disfunctional. The inability to get BREXIT done,
together with the complete failure of MPs to protect the interests of their respective electorates displays either gross negligence, or worse the deliberate undermining of the democratic process. The social contract has been broken. The situation is clearly very serious. The public, by and large, has lost faith in the political system. BREXIT was an expression of dissatisfaction with the status quo which left far too many people behind. Johnson has clearly failed to do anything to address the underlying resentment festering among a population who see their own, and their children’s futures being destroyed.
Time for radical change. The status quo no longer works for most people.
I think trying to sustain this program of lies will take its toll on this clown as he realises that contrary to becoming afraid a lot of people are pushing back. You don’t need 68 million people to crash the program. One tenth that number can do it, and as this police state is nowhere near entrenched I think he’ll be showing signs of panic before long.
The longer this clown is directing this dreadful play the sooner we can close it down.
