Shoppers who tried to pay with cash have been forced to leave food and medicine behind after being turned away at the tills, Which? warned.
The consumer group said it had received nearly 2,500 reports to its cash acceptance tool from people who said a retailer had refused to take their notes and coins during the pandemic.
Of those respondents, 43 per cent said they did not have another payment method on them so were not able to buy the item they wanted.
Four in 10 said they had problems buying food or groceries, one in seven at coffee shops or restaurants and one in 10 paying for parking. Almost 20 per cent of respondents said they had left empty-handed when trying to pay for medicine.
Which? said the experience had left some shoppers fearing for how they would cope if further lockdown measures were introduced.
Richard Piggin, head of campaigns at Which?, said that a “rapid move” towards a cashless society risked excluding the vulnerable from vital products and services.
He added: “We’re alarmed at the reports of people leaving food and medicine behind because they can’t pay with cash, and it underlines how important it is to have a coordinated approach to protecting the fragile cash system.”
However Andrew Cregan, of the British Retail Consortium, a trade body, said all major retailers continue to accept cash or card.
He added: “Many people continue to rely on cash, including those most vulnerable, especially for budgeting and control purposes. Not everyone has a credit or debit card available to them, yet everyone needs access to essential goods and services.”
When the system collapses, cash will be king for a while, until the metals take over. Then the digital currency will arrive in your digital wallet, and enslavement ensues..
Not all major UK retailers are taking cash. Homebase being one example and what about certain major Supermarkets whose staff have been ordered NOT to give cash back to card payers at the tills?
