Some level of social distancing will remain until a coronavirus vaccine has been developed, even though the government is working to restore people’s lives to “as close to normal as possible”, Michael Gove has said.
Mr Gove warned that people would have to live with “some degree of constraint” for many months and suggested the British public would have to accept a “new normal” going forward.
His comments came as the UK’s official death toll from Covid-19 rose to 28,446 on Sunday.
“Ultimately, unless and until we have a vaccine then I suspect that we are going to have to live with some degree of constraint because of the nature of the virus,” the Cabinet Office minister said during the daily press briefing.
“But we obviously want to, wherever possible, and consistent with the measures on public health, restore people’s lives to as close to normal as possible.”
He added that the government would pursue a “phased approach” to easing the lockdown, with Boris Johnson, the prime minister, setting out future measures on Thursday.
Professor Stephen Powis, NHS England’s national medical director, said it was “really difficult” to know how the virus would play out in the coming months.
He acknowledged it was “impossible to say” when a vaccine or effective treatment would be available, although he said there was “hope” that a solution would be found sooner than it might have been 10 or 20 years ago.
“It’s certainly true to say that we will need to adapt to a new normal until we get to that point,” he added.
Human trials of a vaccine developed by Oxford University began last month, with scientists aiming to have a million doses ready by September if efficacy tests go well.
However, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has repeatedly cautioned that an effective vaccine is unlikely to be available for 12 to 18 months.
Professor Chris Whitty, the UK’s chief medical adviser, also said last month that neither a vaccine or a drug to treat Covid-19 were likely this year.
The government will trial its NHS contact tracing app on the Isle of Wight this week before it is rolled out later this month, with the hope that the app can help with the easing of social restrictions.
Social distancing is anti social by its very nature. It is also completely ineffective for 99% of the public. Every day now more reports come out showing that numbers of deaths from CV19 and flu/pneumonia are actually less than previous years. There never was any need for a lockdown. As yourself the question why have they destroyed the economy for a disease that kills less than annual flu? The answer is because they want the economy to collapse so they can introduce measures that suit their agenda. The Mark of the Beast is everywhere and must be confronted if we are to win the battle for the minds of humanity.

There is no law anywhere that Said’s you can lock down people especially those who are healthy. It amounts to little less then house arrest and is a disgrace. Our totally lame Minister of Health in my Canadian province in politically-correct Canada, says they might let up a little by allowing groups up to 30 to meet but of course being social distanced. They closed down a few meat processing factories as well recently. All this and entirely no basis in medical science for it. They know that over 99.9% of the population is not at risk of coming any where near of dying, and those who are in that tiny group can be protected by reasonable means without even having to shut down even one nursing home.
They also know the lockdowns have nothing to do with the virus. It is all about control for the “new normal” for mainly economic regulation and government control. You would think that the useless socialists in my Province would oppose this cartel-run, joint neo-con and globalist con-game psyop. However, what is in it for them is bigger government and more control for Big Brother, with more upsizing of government for jobs, patronage, higher taxes, growth of government and more places to climb to with higher salaries for going to meetings and conference and feel self important. Correspondingly, all this is to take place with the downsizing of the favored few big corporations with the engineered death of their competition which is small and medium sized business which are hated with the same passion as they hate the middle classes (i.e. all those who actually pay taxes and do not work for the government).
Meat plants? Like we can go to the market and handle apples and packages. That is okay, but if someone is tested positive by some inept government worker that they may have had the virus, then shut the entire plant down. That is the way they hype things up to terrorize the people by a corrupt media which should gulaged. On a meat package there are probably thousands of viruses and bacteria. So what. Wash your hands. Cook the meat. Do not worry. This is not the Black Death. Wake up. Stop the bullshit. Get back to work. Screw big government. Screw big business. Screw the banking cartel which screwed up our economy and creates money out of nothing to enrich themselves and buy up all the major corporations. People have to unite ans shun all of the established political parties which also are corrupt. They can start by meeting in public with people handing out leaflets and speakers saying the government has to be brought down.
