Chinese authorities say they sortied ships and aircraft to “track, monitor, verify, identify and expel” the guided-missile destroyer USS Barry from the Paracel Island chain in the South China Sea on Tuesday.
The People’s Liberation Army’s Southern Theatre Command accused the USS Barry of intruding into “waters around the Paracel Islands without permission,” the South China Morning Post reported.
Navy officials told USNI News, however, that the Barry had conducted a “freedom of navigation operation” in the island chain off Vietnam.
The vessel had transited the Taiwan Strait twice earlier this month, provoking a similar reaction from China. The Chinese Liaoning Carrier Strike Group also transited the Taiwan Strait April 22, a day after Barry transited the same area.
PLA Southern Theatre Command spokesman Li Huamin said the operation was “incompatible with the current atmosphere as the international community is fighting pandemic.”
The United States and China have each accused the other of using the COVID-19 pandemic as a distraction to exercise more military control in the South China Sea.
The Barry has been active in the South China Sea operating with the guided-missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill and the amphibious assault ship USS America off the coast of Malaysia.

Elephant and elephant quarrel, deer die in the middle…hehe.
UNCLOS is an internationally recognized rules of conduct to manage the conduct of all nations with regards to the fair use of the sea, and I believed is the only one that should be used. China and US and all nations sharing the common sea area must work within the framework of UNCLOS. There is no other way around it.
South China Sea cannot and must not be used as a chessboard for any countries to play with and acquire any form of dominance.
Elephant and elephant quarrel, deer die in the middle.
The headlines claim that the “Chinese military expels USS Barry from Paracels
Islands”, but the story doesn’t say how, when, … and that is extremely doubtful that
anybody expelled anything but propaganda.
Expels – very poor choice of word.
“incompatible with the current atmosphere as the international community is fighting pandemic.”
OK, that’s definitely BS.
So let’s see….the US opens free trade with China enabling the Chinese to rebuild its economy with massive trade deficits favouring China.
The US kindly wrecks it’s own economy by shifting jobs offshore….this in turn reduces the tax available in the USA so that the infrastructure is not adequately maintained….
There must be a bunch of idiots governing the US surely?…
Well you COULD argue…that anyone who votes for a bodybuilder who cannot speak proper English after 50 years living in the US…..deserve their fate.(Arnold Schwarzenegger)
Well Washington is not known as Washingstein just for the hell of it.
At the end of the Han Dynasty in China…the emperor became little more than a figurehead.China was ACTUALLY governed by an “unholy alliance” of palace eunuchs and the emperors “wives”.Chinese citizens were routinely arrested for voicing anti-eunuchism
opinions….
Of course the situation couldnt last….a small “special interest group” siphoning off huge amounts of money from the govt…..a special interest group with no loyalty to the country….
It wasnt long before the eunuchs illegitimate rule was overthrown…..and they took down the remnants of the Han dynasty with them.
@memyselfnie
Why do you claim it is propaganda? If the US vessel was operating alone with limited support in the area, maybe hours away, would they risk an incident with potentially a carrier strike group? NO! Just like the Chinese would not risk a lone ship trying to harass a US carrier group.
Even if it was just a few Chinese ships, the fact they had air support put the US ship out of its depth.
Missile cruisers are designed to engage targets from a distance, but as proven in Saudi and Iraq, the US air defences are woefully lacking, a few missiles and torpedoes and the US ship is toast with no way to rescue any personel, all likely to die or become prisoners for China to bargain with the US over.
Best case they sink one or two ships before they all die (very generous best case too, given China has Russian and self designed air defences, which unlike the west, has proven relaible and capable in Syria, also their missile tech in on par, if not ahead of the west now and finally their torpedoes are super cavitating and supersonic, the west has no counter to such torpedoes at present…)
Would you risk your crew to save face just to play the hardman and bully like the US has grown accustomed to?
So obviously they would beat an embrassing retreat, which although far from being expelled by force, is just as bad as that, given it was the fear of the advesary that caused them to flee…
@Vespasian
WTF are you waffling on about? Who voted Arnold into the White House? He was a governor of California, he was not responsible for the US governements decisions or spending, he just enforced it in California the way he seen fit…
As for your history lesson on China, how is it relevant today? The Communist party in China has benefitted the majority of their population, as seen by the numerous Chinese people coming to the West and having capitol and education enough to start up buisnesses and prosper.
The tens of thousands of students each year that can afford almost double the univeristy fees of the students from that country, just to get an education they can take back to China.
So a few hundred million cling to the old way of living off the land as a farmer and are left in poverty and hardship as a result, there never will be a mass overthrow of the Chinese government as a result, if anything people in the cities agree that the farmers should give up their struggles and join them in the life of luxury (who will feed the nation after is beyond me, but given that China imports so much food from Africa, ME and Australia, they could probably achieve their goal of no more farmers lol)
As has been predicted by many people and myself, the power will shift to the East once again in history, the fact the western nations are destroying their economies over Covid19 is proof we in the west are being lined up as a ritual sacrifice to the devil, before those in charge take up their new roles in China (or stick around in the newly created South Africa version of the west, pockets of well defended rich living in luxury while everyone else is struggling in poverty, opressed by the government and organised crime, which is run for the benefit of the rich)
All decoy by US, Inc.
The states of The United States of America are going into the abyss thanks to the policy of their Service Contractor US, Inc.
US, Inc. is actually broke since 2015. Thus, Pentagon is broke and the Secret Alphabet Soup is also broke.
The US Navy, Inc. is sailing outside the territorial waters of The USA and is then sailing under orders of the Queen of England, probably with the approval of the pope of Vatican City.

@Mojo jojo
Why do you claim it is propaganda?
There IS ZERO(0) facts, just some bullshit assertions as facts. There isn’t even any
evidence, maybe that’s why it’s one of the shortest articles I’ve ever seen on truthseeker.
Expels? People believe what they want to believe, but there is absolutely nothing to
even suggest the ship was “expelled”. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not necessarily the
biggest fan of the US military, but I’m definitely not the biggest fan of the Chinese military.
This is the very definition of propaganda. Most “news” is manipulated for people to
“think they know”, but the most important definition of “know” is certainty, and there IS
NO CERTAINTY HERE.
@memyselfnie
I never did claim it was propagander, I asked why you claimed it was, big difference.
You are correct in saying the only certainty is what is known, but given no one outside of a select circle are every privy to that certainty of knowledge, all we have to go off of is what information we have been given and what we know ourselves from experience and witnessing it happen in our lives etc.
Even that is open to manipulation and feeding false narratives here and there to point us in the wrong direction, so I may be totally wrong in my views, but given the facts have proven my train of thought to date, I will stick by my assumptions of the US being woefully inadequate to combat Chinese expansion in their own region, which falls outside of the limits of US dominance.
Heck even Iraq and Afghanistan that were both occupied with over 100 thousand troops at their peaks were never dominated outside of the green zones of Baghdad and Kabul (but even then they were not safe zones, they had to have multiple check points and security rings to protect them from the rebel attacks they suffered constantly, one of the worse being Taliban all but capturing Kabul at one point, until air support supressed them and they ran out of munitions and supplies…)
But history is written by the victors, so do not expect to find the true facts in a decade or two after this all is done and dusted.
