Iran’s Missile Launch Against Two U.S. Bases in Iraq Calls Trump’s Bluff – Updated

IRGC Qiam ballistic missile in an underground silo.

Last night Iran fired 22 Qiam missiles towards two U.S. bases in Iraq. Between 1:45 and 2:15 local time (~22:00 UTC) seventeen missiles hit the Ain al Assad airbase west of Ramadi. Five missiles were aimed at Erbil airport in the northern Kurdish region of Iraq. There were no casualties.

The Swiss embassy in Tehran, which represents the U.S., was warned at least one hour before the attack happened. Around 0:00 UTC the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) which prohibited civil U.S. flights over Iraq, Iran, the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.

This attack was the “open” and “proportional” response for the U.S. assassination of Major General Qassem Soleimani which Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei had promised. It will certainly not be the only response but represents the opening shot of a long and much more silent campaign to kick the U.S. out of the Middle East.

U.S. President Donald Trump, who had threatened to destroy 52 targets in Iran including cultural sites if Iran would take any revenge, seems to have understood that this attack was intentionally limited to avoid a larger war:

All is well! Missiles launched from Iran at two military bases located in Iraq. Assessment of casualties & damages taking place now. So far, so good! We have the most powerful and well equipped military anywhere in the world, by far! I will be making a statement tomorrow morning.

The Qiam missiles Iran launched are a derivative of the Soviet Scud type. They are liquid fueled with a warhead of about 700 kilogram. They have a range of some 800 kilometer. Iran has more capable and precise solid fueled missiles it could have used.

The Ain al Assad airbase which was hit is where the drones that killed Soleimani and the Iraqi leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis were launched from. Erbil airport is the logistic center for the U.S. forces in Syria.

Videos show the launch and the impact of the missiles.

No U.S. air or missile defense against the incoming projectiles was observed.

The message from Iran is thus: “We can attack all your bases and you can do nothing to prevent that.”

Iran’s leader said that the attack was “slap in the face” for the U.S. and that this military reaction to the U.S. crime is not the only one that will happen:

Continues with an aerial photo of the Ain Assad Airbase that reveals the accuracy of Iran’s missile strike:

  1. Iran blinked, they cant stomach all out war, so hit empty areas of these bases.

  2. Actually, the U.S. also blinked. Trump had warned Iran about retaliating for Soleimani’s assassination and they have, albeit after warning the U.S., which is why there were no casualties.

So what does Trump do? Exactly nothing:

Standing down: How Trump decided that not striking back was his best option on Iran

  3. Alright, I had early information from Iraqi sources on the number of missiles. However now after IRGC’s aerospace division commander has explained. 13 missiles were launched to hit the Lion’s Eye base and all of the hit successfully. I am however sure Moon of Alabama is incorrect on the number and types of missiles. Only two missiles that hit the base were of Qiam (has no fins/wings) with liquid fuel, the rest were Fateh-313 solid fuel as mentioned before. Iran has more advanced and deadlier missiles however those were not used. There is absolutely no doubt that tens of soldiers were killed and hundreds were injured, the most probable figure is still 80 killed and 200 wounded. US moved most of them to hospitals in Israel and Jordan. Hajizadeh said killing was not their main priority in this first attack and they were prepared to respond with many more missiles in case US retaliated. You can look up the translation for his speech. Hajizadeh said 15 minutes after missile launches, they conducted a large cyber attack affecting US flying drones and radars and for minutes they lost control of them and this had a great demoralization effect on the US base.

So the correction is: 13 missiles were used on Lion’s Eye base and that the range of the two Qiam missiles is 700 KM rather than 800KM which won’t really mater.

US did not allow journalists to check out the base, they tried to buy time and clean up the base as much as possible and move the dead and injured, this however eventually will be known. US tried to deflect attentions with the passenger plane crash and other things. It is however clear that US is not showing any intention to retaliate and trying to make this important and historic even as insignificant. Still they try to compare Iran’s missiles with useless antique SCUD missiles!

regardless as time passes we will know more for sure.

  4. What is Trump’s pattern. He stirs things up, moves military assets into position, makes over the top threats, pushes the world right up to nuclear war then backs off and self-aggrandizing braggart-showman-conman who acts as a hero who pulled the world back from the brink.

He never actually goes to war. He bluffs every time. Trump is a giant pussy playing war like a kid with plastic soldiers in a sandbox.

So I ask for the umpteenth time, does Trump have the nerve in launching an all out attack on Iran? The answer is NO. He is billionaire brat with no stomach for war. He’s a playboy of limited intelligence, he uses the word beautiful too often, he has the emotionally maturity of a 15 year old punk, and a reading level of a 12 year old C student.

He launched the cruise missile barrage and he droned Soleimani – both of those criminal acts are the limits of Trump’s aggression. Trump is a bloated toothless tiger all roar and no bite. His Zionist sponsors will figure this out and replace him.

  5. The Iranian rockets can hit a building 600 miles away. That must have given the Pentagon something to think about, and also made them ask why American boys lives are being put at risk at the behest of Israel.
