Protesters in Iraq have dealt a symbolic blow to US prestige by storming the American embassy in Baghdad, trapping diplomats inside while chanting “Death to America” and slogans in support of pro-Iranian militias.
In a humiliating day for Washington, hundreds of demonstrators besieged the US compound, at one point breaching the main gate and smashing their way into several reception rooms. They lit fires, battered down doors, and lobbed bricks at bulletproof glass.
The rampage was carried out with the apparent connivance of Iraqi security forces who allowed protesters inside the highly protected Green Zone. They made their way to the embassy, climbing walls and hurling stones. US guards responded with tear gas but did not open fire.
Donald Trump accused Iran of orchestrating the day-long attack, which followed US airstrikes on Sunday against three camps in Iraq and two in Syria. The bases belonged to the Iran-backed Kata’ib Hezbollah militia group, which is formally part of the Iraqi army. At least 25 fighters were killed and dozens injured.
US officials said the raids were carried out to deter future acts of aggression following a rocket attack on Friday by the group against a US base in Kirkuk, in which one US contractor was killed and four Americans were injured. President Trump approved the operation on Saturday.
Instead of advancing US goals, the airstrikes appear to be the latest in a series of foreign policy blunders in the Middle East. Iraq’s government furiously condemned them, while pro-Iranian militias promised further attacks against American targets, with the goal of expelling US forces.
“Iran killed an American contractor, wounding many. We strongly responded, and always will,” Trump tweeted. “Now Iran is orchestrating an attack on the US Embassy in Iraq. They will be held fully responsible.”
The US embassy denied earlier reports from Iraq’s foreign ministry that the ambassador and his staff were hastily evacuated, as protesters surged towards the building.

An embassy spokesperson told CNN that the chief of the US mission in Iraq, Matthew Tueller, was away on a scheduled vacation and had left Baghdad a week ago. The embassy was under lockdown but had not been evacuated, the spokesperson said, with diplomats sheltering in a safe-room.
Video from the scene showed thick grey smoke engulfing the compound against a backdrop of wailing from an emergency siren. Protesters shouted “No, no, America!” and “No, no, Trump!”, and “Death to America!”. By nightfall fires were still burning. One masked man walked off insouciantly with an official US embassy sign.
Former foreign service staff compared the chaotic scenes to the ransacking in 1979 of the US embassy in Tehran, which saw 52 US citizens taken hostage. Tuesday’s events, however, were not on the same dramatic scale. There was no loss of life and most of the embassy building survived intact.
Nonetheless, the prospect of a worsening conflict between US forces and Iranian proxies in Iraq looms large. The Trump administration’s policy of piling sanctions and economic pressure on Tehran appears to have brought about few tangible diplomatic results and has taken relations with Iraq to a new low.
Iraq’s prime minister, Adel Abdul-Mahdi – an ally of both Iran and Washington – vowed on Tuesday to protect the safety and security of US personnel. After doing little initially to halt the violence Iraqi security forces turned up in force in the afternoon, and formed a protective line between angry crowds and US guards.
The US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo said the US would “protect and defend its people” in a phone call with Abdul-Mahdi. The viability of the US’s diplomatic mission in Baghdad – its largest in the world – is now an open question, as demonstrators set up tents outside its perimeter.
Many of the protesters had come from funerals held in Baghdad for some of the dead militia fighters. They were carrying flags belonging to Kata’ib Hezbollah and to Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces), a powerful paramilitary group of which Kata’ib Hezbollah is a part.
Qais al-Khazali, the leader of the Iranian-backed Asa’ib Ahl al-Haq militia, and many other senior militia leaders were among the demonstrators. On Monday, Iran condemned the US strikes as “terrorism”. Russia complained it had not been given advance warning.
Street protests take place regularly in the Iraqi capital. In recent months, security guards have shot dead more than 450 people protesting against rampant government corruption and the growing influence of Iranian-backed groups, including Kata’ib Hezbollah

As we all remember not long ago, US and Saudis designed a demo and attack on the Iranian embassy in Iraq; their propaganda machine was salivating and maneuvering on burning pictures of Iranian embassy saying Iraqi people hate Iran.
We should however set a standard: Hooligans and thugs cover faces and attack at night and they are not numerous, while people demonstrate in broad day light with visible faces and in great numbers. In comparison what we see now is that indeed thugs were hired to burn Iranian embassy at night, however Iraqi people were mobilized and attacked US embassy in great numbers. One can say Iran is behind this move, sure the important thing is that in the soft-war which is battle for hearts and minds, Iran has won in mobilizing the Iraqi people. The US embassy in Iraq is a ridiculously large area, an embassy should not be so overgrown. It is common knowledge that US has been using its embassies (Den of Spies) to cause revolts, revolutions and mayhem in their host countries in order to create slave nations. Having an embassy makes it easy to approach military, political and other people of importance and influence within that country!
So what led to all of this? Hashd Al Shabi is formed of other groups that fought and defeated ISIS. One of these groups that is much more organized and capable than the others is Kata’ib Hezbollah (Brigades of the Party of God), now they are Shia and pro Iran however they are not to be mistaken with Hezbollah of Lebanon. This group even now is actively fighting remnants of ISIS and is a potent defensive line for Iraq. US and allies in particular Saudis really tried their best to disband Hash Al Shabi, arguing that ISIS is finished and so there is no longer a need for existence of such groups. Despite all the money and psychological tricks, Hashd Al Shabi is now officially part of Iraqi army and is also paid by Iraq’s national military. Iraq and Iraqis know that their US equipped and trained military was pathetic and could not hold even 1 day against ISIS. It was Iran that helped Iraq train and create such militias and groups, similar to Hoothis of Yemen or Hezbollah of Lebanon. US leadership as usual is impatient and looks for easy and quick results, so thinking in such a time they have the upper hand, they attacked Kata’ib Hezbollah under the pretext that they attacked and killed 1 American, this ofcourse without any proofs and asking what would be the benefit for such groups to kill one random American, besides they are not chaotic and ultimately follow orders from IRGC in such matters. Americans and Saudis wanted to show that Iraqi people are suffering because of such groups, today this has failed. The result of American attack on this group was that all religious scholars, all Iraqi government and Iraqi people unanimously asked for withdrawal of US forces. One day before the new year, a Christian commander of Hashd Al Shabi along with other christian fighters of the group show up at the US embassy among other people in the demonstration and chant for removal of US embassy in a very symbolic move. Yes Hash Al Shabi has Iraqi Christian members too! This is a huge win for the Resistance Block!
So US can’t directly fight Iran in the open, except through Sanctions, is incapable of hard military response because of Iran’s deterrence and so takes a fight with a militia that is most effective in fight against ISIS. If there is a false-flag it was the attack that killed an American, probably done by Kurdish sell outs on the order of their masters.
Hashd Al Shabi is a battle hardened and ready force in the region. Saudis are afraid of this group, should there be a war with Iran, no doubt Hashd Al Shabi will be mobilized as they are closer and have land border with Saudis, Iranians would support only for obvious political reasons, Iran would does not want to be branded as an expansionist empire building hegemony. Nah Iran lays back and let things take natural coarse. US can’t do anything in the region, Iran has cultural, historical, religious ties to the region that binds, not only that Iran’s leadership has wisdom, resolve and patience, something the current US leadership totally lacks. US can’t sustain itself and its artificial puppet regimes in the region. This is greatly costly for Americans and they should distance themselves from such evil and wasteful policies. The joint naval war games held by Iran, Russia and China is really a turning point.
After the Martyrdom of Gen Ghasem Suleiman, Abu Mehdi Mohandes and others, we can expect a serious escalation and a heavy response to US forces and their allies in the region soon. Perhaps we can expect a regional war that probably will lead to removal all US forces from at least Iraq and Syria.
Developments are fast and one needs to be constantly on the watch. Already US personnel of the embassy in Iraq have fled for fear of retaliation. This is abandoning has not been ordered, rather they have themselves decided it is very unsafe and they should leave. In the following days we can only wait and see what follows with great anticipation!
