The U.S. Army’s chief of staff is warning that the threats posed by China and Russia are on the rise.

Gen. Mark Milley told the House Armed Services Committee Tuesday that “international order, and by extension the United States’ interest, are under increasing and dangerous pressure.”

“China is a significant threat to the United States,” he added, calling Beijing “a revisionist power seeking to diminish the U.S.”

He also warned of the increasing threat of Russia’s influence not just in the Western Hemisphere but around the world, backed by the Kremlin’s massive nuclear capabilities.

“Russia remains the only current existential threat to the United States,” Gen. Milley told the committee. “It will become, in my opinion, increasingly opportunistic and … take greater risks in the near term.”
