I also referred \u00a0to Chaim Weizmann\u2019s famous observation that \u201cthere are no English, French, German or American Jews, but only Jews living in England, France, Germany or America.\u201d I obviously argue that Jews who fall into the 3rd category are primarily Zionists. In most cases they support Zionism but even when they oppose it, and in spite being \u2018progressive\u2019 and \u2018secular\u2019, they, for some reason, prefer to operate politically \u2018as Jews\u2019. I guess that they must attribute a certain kind of specialness to their ethnic origin \u2013 they are \u2018Judeo centric.\u2019<\/h5>\n
In the following piece, MJ Rosenberg courageously reports on a recent encounter with a bright American Jewish boy.<\/h5>\n
\u201cYou may not realize it,\u201d the boy tells Rosenberg,\u00a0 \u201cbut your premise is Zionist. You think Jews are, by definition, connected to Israel and have to care about it. But that isn\u2019t who I am.\u00a0 I\u2019m an American kid whose religion is Jewish.\u201d<\/h5>\n
It took more than a century for a Jewish boy to answer Weizmann; I am not a \u2018Jew who lives in America\u2019. I am actually an American Jew.<\/h5>\n
But what about the progressive Jews who care so much for Palestine? The boy answers, \u201cthe Jewish kids who are deeply involved with Israel or Palestinians are sort of the same kids. They accept your premise that they are connected to that place.\u201d Strictly Speaking, they are Weizmannian Jews!<\/h5>\n
\u201cYou, MJ, are a Zionist,\u201d he continues,\u00a0 \u201cYou think I have an obligation to try to stop the occupation because of my religion. To me, that is no different than telling me I have to support Netanyahu because of my religion.\u201d<\/h5>\n
I actually admire Rosenberg for sharing this fascinating conversation with the rest of us. I guess that more and more people within the anti-war and the Palestinian solidarity movement know it by now: we are dealing here with liberal Zionists who more than often operate as controlled opposition but most of the time are merely AZZ (anti-zionist zionists).<\/h5>\n

Jewish College Kid Beats Crap Out Of Me On Israel<\/strong><\/h2>\n

I was on the bus, returning to Washington from New York where I spent Yom Kippur.<\/h5>\n
I wouldn\u2019t have talked to the kid next to me him except I could not find the outlet near my seat to charge my phone. He saw me struggling and helped me find it. (It was camouflaged under the seat in front of mine).\u00a0 We started to talk and, after I told him I had been in Manhattan for the Jewish holiday, he said that he had been there for the same reason.<\/h5>\n
We talked about Georgetown and why he chose to go there and then he asked me what I did.<\/h5>\n
I told him \u201cmy story\u201d which led him to say that he had no interest in the Middle East at all. His issue was income inequality in the United States.<\/h5>\n
Nonetheless, he was fairly knowledgeable about the Middle East. As the conversation went on, I discovered he was fairly knowledgeable about everything. Judging from his looks I\u2019d have taken him for a jock or a preppy but he seemed more intellectual than either of those categories would suggest.<\/h5>\n
After telling him about my odyssey from AIPAC to critic of both AIPAC and Israel, he said this (paraphrase, obviously):<\/h5>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t get it. I\u2019m Jewish but Israel is not important to me. I live here and I\u2019d like to help out people who live here. 46 million Americans live in poverty and the situation keeps getting worse and worse. In fact, this country keeps getting worse.\u00a0 Why should I worry about Israel?\u201d<\/em><\/h5>\n
I explained why and he said:<\/h5>\n
\u201cYou may not realize it, but your premise is Zionist. You think Jews are, by definition, connected to Israel and have to care about it. But that isn\u2019t who I am.\u00a0 I\u2019m an American kid whose religion is Jewish. Period. I have no obligation to Israel or to Palestinians because I feel no connection to either. I feel that as a privileged American I do have an obligation to Americans who aren\u2019t privileged. I\u2019m not saying I don\u2019t care about people in other countries. I do. <\/em><\/h5>\n
Maybe someday I will think about Israel more than I do. But, just as likely, I\u2019ll care about poverty in Latin America. As for your point that America is responsible for Palestinian suffering by sending aid to Israel, I agree. But how does that make the situation unique? As a taxpayer, actually\u00a0 a future US taxpayer, I will be contributing to all kinds of terrible things everywhere. But my being Jewish has nothing to do with it. It\u2019s not like I would ever take a Birthright trip! I don\u2019t consider Israel to be my birthright.\u201d<\/em><\/h5>\n
I asked him if he was typical of his friends. He said that he was.<\/h5>\n
\u201cThe Jewish kids who are deeply involved with Israel or Palestinians are sort of the same kids. They accept your premise that they are connected to that place. I don\u2019t and most of my friends don\u2019t either. I\u2019d say we are post-national. America is our country because we live here. Period. It\u2019s home. But then we travel, see the world, and want to help other people, at least some of us do. But Israel is not special to us and neither are Palestinians.<\/em><\/h5>\n
\u201cYou, MJ, are a Zionist. You think I have an obligation to try to stop the occupation because of my religion. To me, that is no different than telling me I have to support Netanyahu because of my religion. I see no difference. It is outmoded thinking.\u00a0 Tell me why Israel and Palestine is any more my problem than that of any other American my age, or why I should think about it anymore than I think about the treatment of women in India. I have the right to choose the issues I care about and work to solve, don\u2019t I? Or does my being Jewish mean I have my choice made for me? Show me where I\u2019m wrong? I\u2019m sure that if you were 20, you would feel the exact same way. Am I right?\u201d<\/em><\/h5>\n
