\"\"<\/a>Once again we see a familiar pattern: our united ‘progressives’ — a veritable synagogue, a collective of great humanists — lend their support to the oppressed.\u00a0 This time it is the \u2018Syrian people\u2019 whom they wish to liberate and their enemy is obviously Bashar Al-Asad.<\/h5>\n
It is a pattern we know only too well by now. Ahead of the \u2018War Against Terror\u2019 we witnessed years of intensive progressive Feminist and Gay\u2019s rights groups campaigns for women\u2019s rights in Afghanistan.\u00a0 The Progressive type also disapproves of the current state of the Iranian revolution. Too often he or she would insist that we must liberate<\/em> the Iranians.\u00a0 This week, once again, we see a united front made by Tariq Ali, Ilan Pappe, Fredric Jameson, Norman Finkelstein<\/strong> and other very good people. They clearly want us to \u2018liberate the Syrians\u2019.<\/h5>\n
They campaign openly <\/span>to topple Bashar al-Asad\u2019s <\/span><\/span>regim<\/span>e<\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/em> They call the \u2018people of the world\u2019 to pressure the Syrian regime to end its oppression of and war on the \u2018Syrian people.\u2019 \u201cWe demand,\u201d they say,\u00a0that Bashar al-Asad leave immediately without excuses so that Syria can begin a speedy recovery towards a democratic future.\u201d<\/h5>\n
So here we are. Ali, Jameson, Pappe, Finelstein & Co, in light of recent Israeli attacks on Syria, will you be kind enough, gentlemen, to tell us whom you support? Is it\u00a0Asad or Netanyahu you side with?<\/h5>\n
One may wonder how it can happen that\u00a0our progressives,\u00a0in spite of their good will and humanist credentials, have managed once again to end up in bed with Bibi?<\/h5>\n
The answer is actually embarrassingly simple. The progressive philosophy is the latest and most advanced form of ideological choseness. Calling yourself a progressive obviously entails that someone else must be \u00a0a \u2018reactionary\u2019. It is a self-appointed elitist standpoint that is inherently intolerant and supremacist.<\/h5>\n
Progressiveness is a precept devoted to the\u00a0Tikun Olam<\/em> (fixing the universe) ideology. \u00a0It is premised\u00a0 on the idea that those who uphold progressive ideas \u2018know better.’ \u00a0They know what is right and who is wrong. The Progressive knows how to differentiate between the Kosher and the Taref<\/em>. \u00a0The progressive voices in this case \u00a0somehow turn a blind eye to the embarrassing fact that it is actually the Syrian army, largely Sunnis, that is fighting the so-called \u2018Syrian rebels\u2019 who are a motley gathering of foreign mercenaries.<\/h5>\n
Perhaps our progressive interventionists could do with reading Robert Fisk more often — after all, Fisk may as well be the only reliable English-speaking reporter in the region. \u201cThe word \u2018democracy\u2019 and the name of Assad do not blend very well in much of Syria.\u201d Fisk <\/span><\/span>reports<\/span><\/span><\/a>, but he continues,\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cI rather think that the soldiers of what is officially called the Syrian Arab Army are fighting for Syria rather than Assad. But fighting they are and maybe, for now, they are winning an unwinnable war.\u201d<\/h5>\n
Bearing that in mind, I would expect progressive intellectuals, amongst them respected historians and political scientists, to be slightly more sophisticated and ponder a bit more before providing Israel with a moral green light to launch a new global conflict.<\/h5>\n
I would tend to believe that it is about time our progressive humanists engaged in a preliminary ethical investigation. They should find out, once and for all, what is it that constitutes moral grounds for any form of intervention. I believe that before you preach ‘Tikun Olam’<\/em> and \u00a0claim to ‘fix the world’ in the name of \u00a0the usually cited \u2018civil society\u2019 and \u2018international law,\u2019 \u00a0you may want to consider fixing yourselves first.<\/h5>\n
