A political analyst says the United States is using al-Qaeda terrorists as irregular infantry in its proxy war against the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The administration of US President Barack Obama has \u201ca foreign policy which relies on al-Qaeda as a kind of irregular or auxiliary force, a kind of irregular infantry,\u201d Washington-based author and historian, Dr. Webster Griffin Tarpley, told Press TV in an exclusive interview.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Tarpley contrasted Washington’s new policy with US-led wars in Afghanistan and Iraq under Obama\u2019s predecessor, George W. Bush, where official US army divisions were on the ground.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe may be getting to that [point] for Syria…but what it has been up to now is using al-Qaeda as an irregular opposition force,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The historian recalled how Washington and its allies justified the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan and the occupation of Iraq in 2003 with the presence of al-Qaeda terrorists in those countries, \u201cthat was baseless and propaganda, and political argument for these attacks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Tarpley noted that the “Western-backed installation” of al-Qaeda in Syria and the consequent spillover of terrorism across the Middle East, will turn the Mediterranean into a \u201cterrorist lake\u201d given the presence of al-Qaeda cells in Libya – from where al-Qaeda will reach out across the Sahara into Algeria, Mali and other nearby countries.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSo this is one of the most colossal hypocrisies of the age and it also shows the absolute fanatical recklessness of the US ruling class because this is something that you cannot get away with,\u201d the expert warned.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of Syrian army and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country and there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

On April 17, Assad said the West \u201cwill pay a heavy price\u201d for pitting al-Qaeda militants against the Syrian government.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

He also condemned Turkey and some of the country\u2019s Arab neighbors for supporting anti-Syrian terrorists and attempting to spark a sectarian civil war in his country.
