Four International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) members were killed early on Sunday when a member of the Afghan security forces opened fire on them near a remote NATO installation in southern Afghanistan, a coalition spokesman said.<\/h5>\n
The deaths are the latest where Afghan security force members have turned on their Western \u2018allies\u2019 and coincide with Muslim anger over a film that defames the Islamic prophet Muhammad.<\/h5>\n
A spokesman for the ISAF did not cite the nationalities of the dead and but in a statement on its web site Sunday, the Taliban said four Americans were killed, crediting \u201cone Afghan Mujahid,\u201d or holy warrior, for carrying out the attack.<\/h5>\n
Earlier on Saturday night, an Afghan gunman thought to belong to the local police killed two British soldiers in southern Helmand province.<\/h5>\n
The assailant was shot dead during the incident which also left a further 3 British soldiers wounded.<\/h5>\n
The attacks are the latest in a string of similar incidents this year when Afghans soldiers \u2013 or insurgents dressed as government troops \u2013 have turned their weapons on the international forces.<\/h5>\n
They bring to 51 the total number of NATO troops killed this year in so-called \u2018green-on-blue\u2019 attacks.<\/h5>\n
The growing number of such incidents has prompted tighter vetting proceedures during the recruitment of Afghan security force members. With some elements of the Afghan security forces having temporarily suspended all further recruitment<\/span><\/a> as new vetting proceedures are put in place.<\/h5>\n
This follows a visit in August by the U.S. Chief of Staff General Dempsey, who had flown into Kabul to discuss the mounting \u2018green-on-blue\u2019 attacks<\/span><\/a>.<\/h5>\n
In addition to tighter recruiting proceedures it is thought that local intelligence officers will be incorporated into the ranks of Afghan security forces, to monitor dissidence and effectively act as informers.<\/h5>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
