Robert Bales was detained March 11 outside his base in southern Afghanistan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">But it also raises new questions about <strong>how Bales, who was formally charged Friday with 17 counts of premeditated murder and other crimes, could have carried out the nighttime attacks without drawing attention from any Americans on the Kandahar province base.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">The two American officials who disclosed the investigators&#8217; finding spoke on condition of anonymity because the politically sensitive probe is ongoing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">Meanwhile, via <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/agonist.org\/steve_hynd\/20120324\/us_military_holding_kandahar_massacre_wounded_incommunicado\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">the Agonist<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">, Globalpost reports that local reporters were not allowed to interview the wounded witnesses held at a U.S. hospital. They did interview <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalpost.com\/dispatch\/news\/regions\/asia-pacific\/afghanistan\/120322\/kandahar-shootings-sgt-robert-bales-eyewitness-accounts\"><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">two witnesses<\/span><\/strong>:<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">Night raids \u2014 surprise attacks by US soldiers on houses they suspect are associated with the Taliban, are common in this volatile region. \u201cThe Americans usually pick one house to raid, and then they leave.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">But a few moments later residents from neighboring houses began fleeing to Habibullah\u2019s, telling everyone to hide. The attacker \u2014 or attackers \u2014 soon followed, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">\u201cI didn\u2019t hear a lot of shooting and I didn\u2019t hear helicopters,\u201d Habibullah recalled. <strong>But he did see \u201ctwo or three Americans\u201d enter his compound, \u201cusing lights and firing at my father, who was wounded.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">Karzai also spoke to Mullah Baran. Baran\u2019s brother was killed in the shooting spree, but he didn\u2019t see the shooting happen. Baran said he told Karzai what his sister-in-law, who was at the scene, had told him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">When GlobalPost asked Baran to speak directly with his sister-in-law, he initially refused.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">\u201cYou don\u2019t need to talk [with] her,\u201d Baran said. \u201cI did, and I can tell you the story.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">Eventually Baran relented, allowing GlobalPost to interview her by phone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">Massouma, who lives in the neighboring village of Najiban, where 12 people were killed, said <strong>she heard helicopters fly overhead as a uniformed soldier entered her home. She said he flashed a \u201cbig, white light,\u201d and yelled, \u201cTaliban! Taliban! Taliban!\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">Massouma said the soldier shouted \u201cwalkie-talkie, walkie-talkie.\u201d The rules of engagement in hostile areas in Afghanistan permit US soldiers to shoot Afghans holding walkie-talkies because they could be Taliban spotters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">\u201cHe had a radio antenna on his shoulder. He had a walkie-talkie himself, and he was speaking into it,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">After the soldier with the walkie-talkie killed her husband, she said he lingered in the doorway of her home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">\u201cWhile he stood there, I secretly looked through the curtains and saw at least 20 Americans, with heavy weapons, searching all the rooms in our compound, as well as my bathroom,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ccffff;\">At this point, there are so many competing versions, it&#8217;s hard to know what to believe.
