A few days ago, in our discussion thread on the Israeli elections, I suggested that the next step of the agenda would be a \u201ccontested\u201d electoral result and that\u00a0we would witness something like \u201cIsrael\u2019s January 6th\u201d, with Bibi Netanyahu cast in the roll of Trump.<\/p>\n

Less than ten minutes after that post was published, Haaretz published an article headlined<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Will Netanyahu Refuse to Accept the Election Results?<\/p>\n

Within twenty-four hours, that hypothetical had become a reality, when Netanyahu took to the podium to allege the elections had been stolen<\/a> by \u201cArab parties\u201d and \u201cforeign entities\u201d<\/a> \u2013 specifically Qatar.<\/p>\n

The opposition have objected, claiming Netanyahu is \u201cdelegitimising\u201d the democratic process<\/a>, and Qatari officials have naturally denied any involvement at all, calling the accusations \u201cridiculous and dangerous\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Apparently Shin Bet have been instructed by the Israeli Supreme Court<\/a> to begin \u201cprobing\u201d the elections for \u201cArab rigging\u201d<\/a> due to alleged voting irregularities.<\/p>\n

Of course, this doesn\u2019t mean that Netanyahu is going to be the bad guy \u2013 it\u2019s perfectly possible to reject election results and be \u201cthe good guy\u201d. The democrats claimed both of Trump\u2019s elections were rigged, and Remain voters have been calling the Brexit referendum rigged by \u201cRussian interference\u201d for over a decade.<\/p>\n

\u201cElection deniers\u201d \u2013 a label coined in 2020 \u2013 can be \u201cthe good guys\u201d. Sometimes. Maybe.<\/p>\n

But Bibi probably won\u2019t be. He\u2019s the bad kind of election denier, you can tell that by who they compare him to:<\/p>\n

Netanyahu claims Israeli elections being \u2018stolen\u2019 in Trump-style rant<\/p>\n

That\u2019s in the Evening Standard<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Independent went almost word-for-word<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Netanyahu says Israeli election \u201cstolen\u201d by Arab parties in Trump-style claim<\/p>\n

In case you guys weren\u2019t quite getting the implied parallel, Netanyahu = Trump.<\/p>\n

Like I said, \u201cIsrael\u2019s January 6th\u201d.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately I can\u2019t conclusively prove I predicted this, because both Haaretz<\/a> (\u201cIs Netanyahu Going to Try to Pull a January 6 After Israel\u2019s Election?\u201d<\/em>) and The Jerusalem Post (\u201cIsrael Police brace for \u2018January 6\u2019 scenario at Knesset after election\u201d<\/em>) actually used the phrase shortly before I did.<\/p>\n

But, to quote the great Pete Campbell\u2026<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

But what does any of this mean for the future of the Israeli government?<\/p>\n

As the projected results of the election stand, Netanyahu\u2019s bloc will hold 53 seats \u2013 8 short of the needed majority \u2013 while the opposition coalition would have 48. If either side wanted to form a government, they would need the backing of the collected Arab parties, who surged to a projected 19 seats.<\/p>\n

Clearly, by claiming the election was rigged by foreign parties \u2013 before the voting is even finished \u2013 Netanyahu \u00a0almost certainly voids his ability to do this.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re left with a binary \u2013 as the Guardian reports<\/a> \u2013 \u201cNetanyahu remaining in power or a Palestinian-backed coalition\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n

And right now, I think I\u2019m tentatively backing the latter.<\/p>\n

Some papers are already writing Bibi\u2019s political obituary<\/a>, noting the \u201cirony\u201d that the Arab vote led to his downfall.<\/p>\n

So Netanyahu ends up challenging an election \u00a0he apparently won<\/em>, and thereby effectively eliminates himself. \u00a0No loss, \u00a0just \u00a0latest, and possibly final, example of Bibi seeming determined to discredit himself at any cost.<\/p>\n
