What began as protests demanding better conditions for students and teachers has devolved into violence at dozens of locations, concentrated at schools with large immigrant populations<\/p>\n<p>This morning, Oct. 1, further clashes, burning buses, and arson attacks have been reported. French news outlet BFMTV is even speaking of murder attempts being carried out by certain students in one incident where the leadership team of one school in Marseille was doused in gasoline. In response, French Prime Minister S\u00e9bastien Lecornu is convening an interministerial emergency meeting at 1 p.m. to contain the crisis.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">\uf1eb\uf1f7\uf534 BREAKING: Migrant student youths have set fire to multiple buses and even fire trucks in the French city of Marseille as chaos spreads.<\/p>\n<p>The Marseille transport authority, RTM, said several of its buses &#8220;were targeted near high schools in the north and east of Marseille,&#8221;\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/hv8tilIB3B\">pic.twitter.com\/hv8tilIB3B<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Remix News &amp; Views (@RMXnews) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RMXnews\/status\/2105593543469191482?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 1, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In Marseille, the regional government said an \u201cunacceptable line\u201d had been crossed at Victor Hugo High School, where \u201cthe principal, the deputy principal, the general secretary and the team leader were assaulted and doused with gasoline,\u201d according to the Provence-Alpes-C\u00f4te d\u2019Azur region, cited by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bfmtv.com\/societe\/education\/direct-blocus-des-lycees-le-mouvement-se-poursuit-partout-en-france-et-s-etend-aux-universites-des-tensions-dans-plusieurs-villes_LN-202610010305.html\">BFMTV<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>BFMTV also reported that a naval firefighters\u2019 vehicle was looted and set on fire in the city. Viral videos also show a bus on fire with numerous Black and Arab youths pelting the bus with stones and dancing on its roof. The Marseille transport authority, RTM, said several of its buses \u201cwere targeted near high schools in the north and east of Marseille,\u201d that \u201cdrivers had to leave their vehicles in a hurry, and one of them was assaulted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The transit authority condemned \u201cthese irresponsible acts.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ici.fr\/provence-alpes-cote-d-azur\/bouches-du-rhone-13\/de-nombreux-lycees-bloques-en-provence-1655475\">ICI<\/a> reported that two buses caught fire in northern Marseille and that two buses were damaged near Floride High School in the 14th arrondissement. A dumpster was also set alight outside Victor Hugo High School. The school was expected to stay closed for days, and RTL said the administration expected a closure of several weeks.<\/p>\n<p>The Nelson Mandela High School of Nantes actually just had a major \u201ceco-friendly inclusive\u201d renovation. The building cost \u20ac77 million in taxpayer money. However, the all-wooden design, with the interior reportedly designed for \u201cpositive energy,\u201d has now gone up in flames. In Annecy, fires were set outside the Berthollet, Baudelaire and Sommeiller high schools. Firefighters said they were working to keep the flames from reaching the buildings.<\/p>\n<p>The unrest built through the week. On Wednesday, Interior Minister Laurent Nu\u00f1ez said 356 high schools were disrupted, 625 people were arrested and 83 police officers and gendarmes were injured, in a tally he described as not yet final, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europe1.fr\/politique\/blocus-des-lycees-625-interpellations-83-policiers-et-gendarmes-blesses-mercredi-selon-laurent-nunez-1114268\">Europe 1<\/a> reported. Education Minister \u00c9douard Geffray said 119 students and staff had been injured since the blockades began, including 34 staff members. \u201cThat is unprecedented in the national education system,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the following cases have been reported:<\/p>\n<p>In Wattrelos, in the Nord, a car was driven against the gates of the \u00c9mile-Zola middle-and-high school and set on fire Wednesday. The school was closed, and prosecutors opened an inquiry for arson, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lefigaro.fr\/flash-actu\/blocus-des-lycees-a-wattrelos-une-voiture-belier-projetee-sur-les-grilles-d-un-lycee-avant-d-etre-incendiee-20260930\">Le Figaro<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>In Montpellier on Tuesday, a fire destroyed the caretaker\u2019s lodge at a side entrance of Jean-Mermoz High School and the school was evacuated.<\/p>\n<p>In Bordeaux on Wednesday, a bin fire outside Gustave-Eiffel High School spread to the fa\u00e7ades of two houses across the street, and firework mortars were fired toward the school, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ici.fr\/nouvelle-aquitaine\/gironde-33\/bordeaux\/photos-blocus-de-lycees-tirs-de-mortiers-et-feu-de-poubelle-a-bordeaux-devant-le-lycee-gustave-eiffel-7785406\">ICI<\/a> reported.
