Birmingham City Council is set to spend \u00a32.6 million removing British flags from the streets despite being bankrupt and the most indebted local authority in the country. The Telegraph <\/em>has the story<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Birmingham City Council said\u00a0removing British flags\u00a0lining the streets would cost \u00a32.6 million, court documents reveal.<\/p>\n

The bankrupt council \u2013 run by a coalition of Liberal Democrats, Greens and independents \u2013 said removal works would cost the equivalent of \u00a3132 per flag.<\/p>\n

St George\u2019s and Union Jack flags have been plastered across Britain since last year as part of Operation Raise the Colours, a movement in favour of promoting national pride.<\/p>\n

Around 20,000 flags were installed on lamp posts across Birmingham, which will cost approximately \u00a32.6 million to remove, according to documents submitted to the High Court.<\/p>\n

Birmingham City Council has more than \u00a33.5 billion of debt, the most of any local authority in the country. In September 2023, it issued a section 114 notice, effectively\u00a0declaring itself bankrupt<\/a>, after over a decade of Labour majority control.<\/p>\n

The council was forced to raise council tax for next year by 4.99%, the maximum increase allowed without holding a referendum.<\/p>\n

Opponents of the removal project said taxpayers were \u201centitled to ask how spending millions taking flags down could possibly be the right priority\u201d.<\/p>\n

Operation Raise the Colours, an online \u201cpatriotism campaign\u201d, emerged last summer and encouraged people to hang patriotic flags across England. Its co-founders are named in Birmingham City Council\u2019s documents submitted to the High Court.<\/p>\n

The council has\u00a0launched legal action<\/a>\u00a0to ban residents tying Union Flags and St George\u2019s Crosses to lamp posts.<\/p>\n

If the authority is successful in its application for an injunction, members of the public who put up unauthorised flags would also face up to two years in prison, or an unlimited fine.<\/p>\n

Birmingham City Council said it sought an injunction following claims that staff had been harassed while removing unauthorised flags.<\/p>\n

In the court documents, the council stated that a contractor had put the cost at approximately \u00a3132 per flag, warning it would require \u201cpolice support\u201d for the job and the work had to be done in \u201chours of darkness\u201d given the \u201csafety concerns\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile police support was provided as a short-term measure, this approach is not cost-effective or sustainable in the long term,\u201d the council wrote.<\/p>\n

A spokesman for the authority told the Telegraph <\/em>that the injunction was \u201cnot about stopping people flying flags\u201d, but rather about \u201cauthorised attachments\u201d on public property.<\/p>\n

He added that the council was not seeking to prevent people from \u201cflying flags on their property\u201d.<\/p>\n
