Spain’s Ceuta border invasion has morphed into a major political headache for Socialist Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez<\/strong>. Tens of thousands of Spaniards took to the streets of Madrid to protest the government’s handling of the crisis, potentially accelerating the political shift identified by Nomura analysts, who expect right-wing populist movements to gain traction across Europe during the next 18-month election cycle.<\/p>\n

About 72,000 migrants, many reportedly military-age men, invaded the Spanish enclave from neighboring Morocco in late July<\/strong>. The scale and apparent coordination of the invasion raised concerns that Ceuta had been targeted through weaponized migration flows<\/strong>. The influx plunged the enclave, which has a population of approximately 84,000, into utter chaos for weeks.<\/p>\n

By mid-August, a second wave of military-age men attempted<\/a> to storm the Ceuta border<\/strong>, but that effort largely fell flat.<\/p>\n

Although most of the migrants were quickly returned or repatriated, the surge overwhelmed local resources, left at least 90 people dead and sparked serious questions about Madrid’s open border policies. Italy’s continued border checks on arrivals from Spain further show how the Ceuta crisis is reverberating well beyond Spain’s borders<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

About a month and a half after the first migrant wave, the political backlash against S\u00e1nchez and the Socialists in Madrid is mounting<\/strong>. AP News<\/a> reported that more than 50,000 protesters demonstrated<\/strong> against the Socialists over the lack of border enforcement on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
