Donald Trump has claimed he will be impeached if the Republicans lose the\u00a0midterm elections<\/a>\u00a0in November.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0US president<\/a>, campaigning in South Carolina, warned supporters that they would \u201close everything\u201d if Democrats took control of Congress for his final two years in office.<\/p>\n

On Friday, Mr Trump described the potential outcome of the elections in unusually stark language as he faced the prospect of being unable to force through legislation or depend on a compliant\u00a0Congress<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to be impeached. They\u2019re going to impeach me. They have no idea why,\u201d the 80-year-old told supporters at a rally in Myrtle Beach. He is the only man in history to have been\u00a0impeached twice<\/a>, albeit unsuccessfully.<\/p>\n

Many Democrats openly back impeaching Mr Trump for a third time, and at least three have introduced articles of impeachment against him in his second term, though to little effect.<\/p>\n

However, according to The Wall Street Journal, the party is divided about impeaching the US president. Some are concerned about a backlash from voters, or overshadowing priorities such as lowering prices.<\/p>\n

In the past, Mr Trump has sounded blas\u00e9 about the midterms, in which the Democrats are widely predicted to win back control of the House of Representatives. Some pollsters narrowly favour them to regain the Senate as well.<\/p>\n

On Friday, the US president claimed that if Republicans did not turn out, his political opponents would wreck the economy and take the opportunity to undo his achievements.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we lose, you\u2019re going to lose your border, you\u2019re going to lose your tax cuts, you\u2019re going to\u00a0lose everything<\/a>\u00a0that we\u2019ve done,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got the biggest tax cuts in history. Think about no tax on tips, no tax on social security for our seniors, no tax on overtime. All of that\u2019s going to be gone.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour taxes are going to go up. Your pay is going to go down. Your jobs are going to be lost. They\u2019re going to end up closing up. Your businesses are going to flee.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Trump was campaigning in South Carolina for\u00a0Darline Graham<\/a>, who was appointed senator in July following the death of Lindsey Graham, her brother.<\/p>\n

She is running for re-election but failed to win her primary outright, and faces a run-off election on Tuesday. In a\u00a0widely panned<\/a>\u00a0debate performance on Aug 25, she admitted in response to a question on Taiwan that she was \u201cnot that informed on national security\u201d.<\/p>\n

Ms Graham\u2019s success has become critical to Mr Trump\u2019s control of his own party. His endorsement was once feted as the most powerful weapon in conservative politics, but three of his hand-picked candidates lost their Republican primaries on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Speaking in South Carolina, Mr Trump urged his Maga base to \u201cpretend\u201d he was on the ballot, arguing that his political dominance was at stake even though he was not personally standing for election.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey say \u2018Trump does great when he\u2019s on the ballot, but when he\u2019s not on the ballot, his people don\u2019t come,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cSo what I really want you to do is pretend, please, that I\u2019m on the ballot. Just come and vote.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump has only himself to blame if he does badly in the midterms.
